I just picked up a bottle of this from Lidl, the last one on the shelf :) So do you reckon it's worth the money and drinkable?Originally Posted by ktmog6uk

hi had one of the earlier issue, it was nice without being earth shattering, very oaky, with plum/prune fruit coming through, and a waft of smoke on the finish. well worth the price imho, although not a competitor to the £150+ 28year olds out there. if they had left it as cask strength rather than 40% and priced it a bit higher i suspect it would have rated pretty highly though.

Heads up
Ardmore, Glenmorangie, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich @ £20 a bottle in the Co-op
for something a bit different, the Yamazaki 18 y.o. sherry cask is certainly worth a try :)
anyone spotted any last minute pre chrimbo bargains?

Can't say I've found many I don't like - prices seem to be creeping up though
pleased to have stumbled ( not literally) across this whisky thread- i have quite a few stashed away in the cupboard.
not read all pages yet, but just in case not picked up, waitrose have quite a few offers on malts at the moment - inc Laphroig quarter cask, amongst other niceties. Saw scapa there as well- wuite a decent selection of some slightly unusual ones.
also got Janneau down from c£22 to £16 , from what i can remember- bought a bottle last night.
will crawl through the rest of the thread over chrimbo, and share one or two of the gems i have tucked away - in spirit only of course, not 'measures by post'!! bought a port ellen/brora a few years back , circa £30, recently read about a bottle go for auction at around £1500.....!!! ive not yet opened mine.....

Just picked up a bottle of Corryvreckan, surprisingly fruity and smooth for 57 revs Islay dram, will do more sampling tonight :drunken: :D
PS Well, quite interesting comparison with 18yo Laphroaig.. Latter appears more iodine, leathery and 'slim', with tamed peat smoke and briny finish, Corry is much sweeter, smokey with vanilla and fruits/berries tones and sweet coal tarry finish. To sum it up, very drinkable but I would love to see what another 8 -10 years in a hogshead can do to it :drunken:

well, just finished off the last of my 15yo Dalwhinnie, heres hoping theres a bottle or two under the tree~! :drunken:

.. big fan of the 10YO Talisker, not opened this yet.
Got a bottle of old pultney for xmas, cant wait to try it !
Just gave my brother a bottle of Penderhyn - welsh - nice stuff!!
I got a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year old single malt for christmas...
HOLY ****.
This stuff takes hold of your senses and pummels them to a place beyond death.
The peatyness of it is really something else - It smells so medicinal, and leaves an incredibly iodiney aftertaste.
The initial taste, as soon as it hits the tongue is lovely and sweet and very very smokey, but moments after you feel like your drinking a 10 year old blend of bog and marsh!
For me, a new drinker of whisky, it is completely and utterly vile! :P
Earlier tonight actually I heard Rory McGrath refer to it on "Three Men go to New England" in a very complimentary way.
I can totally appreciate for the more sophistacted palet or a more experienced whiksy drinker, that this stuff is the creme de la creme, but for me - oh my god. I still havn't recovered from my tiny taste of it last night.
I'm thinking about putting a For Trade thread up for a less sophisticated whisky!
Has anyone else tried the Laphroaig?
(In seriousness - these are about £27 online - if anyone has a new or very nearly new bottle of something of a similar value (and much less peaty!!) and you fancy a trade, do drop me a PM. I've only tried such a small amount you wouldn't be able to tell other than the missing seal.)
I did fairly well for whiskey this year :drunken: I got the following:
Glenfiddich 18yo
Dalwhinnie 15yo
Old Pulteney 12yo
I also got a bottle of Famous Grouse, but I'm not sure what its for...
Drew
I also got a bottle of Famous Grouse, but I'm not sure what its for...
That would be for giving to SWMBO so the good stuff lasts twice as long
Just sipping my way through a 3 Wood Auchentoshan
i plan to crank open my new bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask when i get home this eve... looking forward to the taste/sense explosion!!
its so much fun buying your own xmas pressies, then wrapping up, and giving em to your mum, to give back to you- one gets exactly what one wants!!!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! :drunken: :drunken: :drunken:
See you've a sneaky Mortlach- lovely stuff.
Br,

Hibiki 17 - the first time I've seen one in someone's collection. I was drinking that the other day and it's rather nice.

Anyone tried it? Has some great reviews and I am partial to Islay.
Yes,very nice for the price, quite light, but definately worth a few bottles at a tenner... will be checking out the stores in Devon tomorrow! Good spot!Originally Posted by dowsing

Used Michael Jackson's 'Malt Whiskey Companion' as my guide book to buying for years and years.
Currently sipping a glass of GlenRiach as I type :)
Laphroaig is great, but a novice getting the 10yr is certainly going "all in" on the 1st hand.Originally Posted by will852
Go back and give it another go before you move it to the back of the cabinet for 20 years. Now that the shock is over, you might appreciate it more.
If you don't like the peat, iodine, brine, there are plenty of other affordable choices. Try a Glenmorangie original or a Highland Park. Both are nice and light, sweet, the HP has light smoke, not peaty.
Cheers!
Good advice above.
If you fancy something a little "sweeter" the Glenmorangie is a great starting point.
Got a bottle of the Laphroaig Quarter Cask for Christmas... delicious.
12yo Bunnahabhain is a much milder Islay malt with less 'peatiness'. A good starting point to acquire the Islay taste!Originally Posted by Tahiti
From the website: 'This 12 year old is lightly peated for an Islay single malt and consequently is a light, fresh dram. Now at the higher strength of 46.3% - for more complexity and flavour.'
There's a stunning selection of malts to choose from after that - although the 12yo is my favourite at the moment!

Or even better get a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15 yo - very drinkable dram :)Originally Posted by Tahiti

or maybe not!!
It's very nice indeed, very smooth.Originally Posted by tt600

on the lidl 18 year old speyside here, and i have to say it's very nice! slightly dusty oak/ very faint piney and sherry nose, light malt, oak and almost resin on the palate, and then a spicy oak/sherry finish.
not bad at all for £20 a bottle!

I've had two bottles of Nadurra in the past year. It's a challenge: subtle, mostly light floral and honey, but the high alcohol makes it a bear to drink neat. A bit of water opens it up and smooths it out nicely. Currently in the pantry: Highland Park 12, The Dalmore 12 and a bottle of Balvenie Single Barrel (not much left of that one).
Cheers!
Cragganmore single speyside malt (12 years).
My wife got me a bottle of Cardhu 12 year for christmas. On the sweet side, very smooth and easy to drink for a relative newby to whisky. I like it a lot.
