the simple answer is - more bang for the buck!
As you can see on my post count I'm quite a beginner here.
I am a proud owner of a SEIKO SKX009, but have always been curious on why the Seiko divers have the status they have in the watch community and why they are so beloved. Also, if anyone could post me a link or fill me in on some Seiko diver history I would be more than happy.
Thanks!

This is a good place to start:

Imagine if Rolex divers were priced realistically. That's Seiko!
A huge range of models for every budget, made to a high standard and priced competitively. Add to that quite a bit of history and WIS appeal with their Prospex models and you can understand the appeal.
Best value for money. Besides: diver pieces are quite practical in everyday use.

To give the Swiss a proper challenge. :whdat:Why are Seiko divers so popular in the watch community?

Costume jewellery. Ouch!!!
I have a 6309-729A has a every day watch , it looks good , is very accurate and cost £60.00.
Great value watches, from a proper watch maker.

Cheers,

For me, as well as the phenomonal value they offer, it is the fact that they are not just Rolex clones.
Distinctive design, heritage, quality - and in the case of my SBCM023 not the size of a dinner plate either.
great value for money and bombproof movements.
Lot of watch for the money -made in large numbers most models and so many differnt models and can be modded to good taste sometimes

WIS also like them because the movents are in house, something not easily found near the 007/009 price point. The fact they are easy to mod also appeals. 8)
I've currently got two Seiko divers and i'm trying to buy a sawtooth & tuna but they are getting pretty hard to find.
This thread needs some pics!

Great prices, last a long time, very practical and you dont mind if it gets too bashed up. I woudl not spend more than £200 on a Seiko though. there are some costing in the 1000's, but the ones for under £200 do the job for me like this one. Its almost as the Blue Sub
I don't own one but can see the appeal.
They have such a huge range of styles, colours and sizes and the build quality is very good. Not rolex/Omega good but superb for the price level.
I'd have a few if they made their movements hand windable/hackable within the £200 mark!
Neil.
I have the SKX031 which is maybe not a "true" diver but the lume is amazing and easy to read!! Great price and robust. I use the bezel on mine for cycling every day.
Looking for an orange sumo myself but don't really wanna spend 400 quid for a new one

Iconic designs at great prices. Excellent build quality and reliability. What's not to like?
The only real life affordable diver :)

Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!

... and you can use them for what they are intend to do! The WR reading on the back is the correct WR and they don't have to be checked every 2 or 3 years like the ADs of high end watches want you to believe!

Unfortunately when I saw this watch on the internet a while ago, it stopped me liking the Sumo as much as I did before. I just don't like the fact that it has (almost?) 100% identical hour and minute hands.Originally Posted by clockwatcher
They are identical - no wonder you have gone of the sumo. Apart from the parallel hour hound, tapering minute hand and differing lengths of course .Originally Posted by Puringa
I wonder if any other Seikos fit that criteria?
a mate of mine has a 7002 from god knows when - its never been serviced keeps excellent time and apart from the bezel becoming
bi-directional and scratched to death it is still waterproof and used daily on the beach in the summer
If it's a 150m 7002 the bezel is bi-directional, if it's a 200m one it should be uni-directional.

I may have forgot one or two, apppologies.
Sorry, but I don't quite get this... What difference does it make if this one has a couple of elements resembling that of a Sumo? Why would this cause someone to go off the Sumo?Originally Posted by Cannop
To answer the OP question, Seiko divers are simply great. Whether you spend a hundred or a couple of thousands on a diver you're getting something that do exactly what it says on the packet: diver's watch, reliable, practical, well made. You can't go wrong. And all of them, as far as I'm aware without exception, have killer lume, SKX007, one of their most basic divers, will outglow most of the high-priced market, in fact even the humble Seiko 5 does quite well in this regard.
My MM600 is probably the best watch I own..........and I own quiet a few
The similar hour and minute hands of the sumo caused him to go off it a bit, the SBDX003 has hands that are similar but:Originally Posted by horrovac

Just a bit of ribbing :)
Agree, it has a quiet confidence and just keeps perfect time. 8)Originally Posted by adrianw

Hadn't seen the appeal until just now. This one's stunning.
Their own (often classic) designs and movements, realistic prices, easy to source parts and inexpensive repair costs.
Thanks ;) Hasn't left my wrist since I got it :DOriginally Posted by el guapo

As a relative newbie to the watch world and seeking a replacement for my Casio diver, trawling the internet I soon picked up on the reputation the Seiko divers have, universally positive reviews on Amazon and suchlike as well as watch forums. This quickly steered my towards buying a SKX007 and I have to say I'm chuffed to bits with it, the build quality is excellent, feels very robust and at the price I won't worry about it potentially taking a beating when it's on my wrist.
I know it's often modded but I think it looks great out of the box with the standard strap.
Echo all of the above, I have 4 seiko divers, and another 6 seiko chrono's. Love them all, and absolute workhorses!
Tooo bad if being popular is because they are cheap and regarded as disposal....but that's mostly the cases.
I like only 1% of the Seiko models and the rest, if Seiko could be more environmental friendly, please stop producing those ugly horrible "things"
PS Though I still own 1/2 dozen of Seiko divers.
