I've got 2 Synchronars, and they're quite interesting watches. Very nice to be able to adjust the rate on the MKIV model, and supposedly you can get timekeeping to +/- 8 secs a year.
I did a sort of review here not too long ago-somewhere!
Chris
I am most likely in the minority in finding these vintage solar powered watches interesting ...and dare I say quaint*
How ever the Synchronar is/was a milestone IMO

*I find reading about them interesting, but I am not brave enough to start collecting these. First of all, because I am not a collector and secondly, because I do not have the skill nor the patience needed to work on these old watches.

Great, that you have two of them, Chris.
Do you have a link to the review, please?
I had one of these, non working.
Gave it to a UK bloke about 12 years ago to fix for me, Phil someone I seem to remember....not seen it since!
Facinating history, I used to be into leds quite a bit and was active on the led forums.
Roger Rheil's son or brother used to pop on now and again with parts and stories.
Great fun for not a lot of cash.
Black Synchromars are the business btw.
Pics anyone?
Colin.

Slightly, but hopefully not too off topic... (if so I'll delete and start a new thread)
In the late 70's I had a ZEON solar powered watch from Argos. I've had an ebay search on it for months but nothing has turne up. Does anyone have a good memory or other info on it to help my search?
TIA
Richard.
Perfectly within thread parametres IMO.
Not much help re the vintage solar ZEON though.
Found this Jamwes Bond ZEON on the bay but does not look solar

This ZEON can be charged but unfortunately not via the sun

Mine was ss digital with a black small solar panel running across the top. Stylish... well I thought so at the time.

They have fallen out big time and are both selling off piecemeal their half of the stock of new and old parts.
Howard is the one who has tried to market some newly made ones from spares and he appeared on DWF.
Spares&strikes in Germany is refurbishing/repairing them. He also offers a sunwatch on ebay every now and then. Ether made from parts or refurbished.
The Synchronar was a watch so unique that is stíll is modern in several aspects and has not been equalled in some too.
The story of ths watch is both increadible and sad. Increadible that one man invented and made a superwatch. Sad that it never went any further and died with him.
Quite.
Very interesting to read the old articles and see the pics of the Synchronar as used by 'movers and shakers' back then
So did you change the battery or was the watch left forgotten in the cupboard?Originally Posted by abraxas
That reminds me, I had a Zeon water powered watch when I was a kid (late 80s). It had little sponges above the digital display with small holes in the case to let the water in. I can't remember how well it worked but I do remember my grandad being amazed by it (he had a potato powered clock but I think my watch trumped it!)
I can't find anything on google about it. Did anyone else have one of these?
EDIT: sorry a bit off topic - happy to start a new thread on thisOriginally Posted by watchcollector1
I changed the battery and sold it. Similar problem with my first kinetic. After 18 months the capacitor packed up. I've never been convinced with 'storage' systems. My phone needs topping up every day. :evil:Originally Posted by WatchScout

I'm pretty sure I remember the Synchronair being shown on BBCs Tomorrow's World. They made. Big deal about the solar technology used. Funny I can remember that and not remember what I had for dinner.
