    Re: birdsong

Well, it could've been done in one episode and still seem too long.

    I thought it was excellent.

I can't decide if he is a selfish person or just unlucky.

    Never read the book though.

I didn't like it. Too long, way too many long, lingering 'meaningful' looks which are unnecessary and detract from the flow of the story, and I found the trench life portrayal wholly unconvincing. Didn't 'feel' the love/passion between the two protagonists ( too many long, lingering 'meaningful' looks ruined it ), and in particular thought the lead guy portrayed his character as just incomprehensibly weird rather than someone recognisably affected by love/loss etc. The book was better, although to be fair I didn't like that much either!

Needless to say, she loved both book and televised version....

I thought the actor who played firebrace was excellent but the lead was awful one expression only looking like toddler who's been told no sweets for a week!

Yarp. Romantic , overblown tosh, bad CGI, bad battle scenes and really badly acted (apart from the chap who plays Firebrace). Not even depressing enough to be depressing. SWMBO walked off after 20minutes.

    I quite liked it.

I thought the book was absolute tosh when I read it a few years ago, so didn't feel the need to be bored again with the adaptation.

Doesnt really add anything but I just wanted to say so.

Went to see it on stage in the West End last year. It was OK-ish.

Just seen the first episode. It was fun. In a kind of ' Downton Abbey on mogadon' sort of way

TV serialisation was okay - easy Sunday evening viewing - but the actor playing Wraysford had a strange set of lips and gormless expression .... a little like a young Michael Portillo :?

The book was far better but have to say the remaining books in the trilogy weren't as good.

    Re: birdsong

I jumped ship at the end of part one when the Wraysford character was, supposedly , killed and left along with the other corpses, in the open awaiting burial or whatever. What a surprise ( not ) when it was discovered that he was just a bit poorly, by one of his men who visited the body to discover whether any personal items were about the poor fellow, so they could be sent to his family, when, lo and behold, he's not dead after all . I thought that was taking a liberty with the viewer so went about my business. Can't be arsed to read the book and find out whether that bit is an elaboration or not. Oh yes, the Missus loved it , apart from all the suffering and whatnot

Ep1 -One of the worst continuity errors (if you can call it that) ever pt1.
Young soldier gets 'exploded', his guts are hanging out. He dies. As camera pulls away he takes 2 of the biggest breaths ever, totally visible to the camera.

Ep2 - One of the worst continuity errors (if you can call it that) ever pt2.
When Firebrace (SPOILER) dies, and Wraysford does the usual slide hands over eyes to lower eyelids thing, you will laugh uncontrollably as Firebrace closes his eyes early in advance....well, I did.

How it got through I don't know.

I noticed that too, very poor. I thought it was okay, nothing more, and nothing less. Agree it was too long winded though, and the acting was a little lame.

I rather liked it. I'm not a great fan of period dramas in most cases but this got my attention.
