Cheaper watches can be just as special as more expensive ones. I still have plenty of Casio watches as well as my nicer ones.

For me though, it's either keep the money in the bank, or have it tied up in watches that I can wear and enjoy. I choose the latter :-)

A bit of both I reckon. But a nice watch is a nice watch regardless of price :-)

I quite agree I've only been interested in watches for a few months but have had various hobbies over the years. I think the thrill of the chase, the researching etc is always the best bit. I'm on a tight budget so have to look at sub £500 watches anyway but even if I had more money I don't think I would spend over 2k on a watch. Does a 10k watch give you 5 x the pleasure of a 2k watch ?? For me my set budget makes this hobby even more fun

    Alternatives:

    a) The snob bubble burst.
    b) You like classic looking no nonsense divers (Doxa, Helson, old Seiko)
    c) You like bright colour dials (Doxa, Halson, Seiko?)

There is Engineering, there is Good Engineering, and there is Over Engineering.

At some point you find that Over Engineering is like having too much sugar in your coffee. :blackeye:

I think you have reached the state of WIS-Zen. I congratulate you, grasshopper!

Old Chineese proverb say, "He who chases rainbows spends much money on watches".

It appears you have realised that whatever "grail" you have, you realise the grail is just a watch, and you simply transfer the desire onto the next grail - and the quest begins again.

(It's taken you a while, mind)

I think that is the point - hit the nail on the head.

My Omega 2531 SMP is one of my favourite all time watches - I have worn it probably less than 5 times from new and baby it more than any other worn watch in my collection. If I found a similar Seiko diver then I would probably be the same with it.

You have tried so many different watches and at the end of the day that brings with it a lot of so so feelings towards most, so looking at things that are a little different or exceptional value for money puts things into perspective somewhat.
It's just a matter of time...

Cheap(er) watches can also have some kind of "soul" and history inside, just look at the Seiko 6309 (cheap and if in original condition-great find)...

    Re: Riddle me this.....

    Interesting, I've owned watches from the following brands;
    Rolex
    Panerai
    Omega
    Breitling
    GP
    AP
    JLC
    Sinn
    Zenith
    Tag Heuer
    Anonimo
    IWC

Yet I too always check out the Seikos, Citizens when they appear because I too really enjoy them, only last week I picked up the Citizen Promaster Eco Drive Carbon Chrono and was very impressed with the quality of finish for the price range and get just as much pleasure wearing them.

Jeeeeess! You must have spent more time buying than wearing watches over the last 15 years!

I think it boils down to liking a watch and being too experienced to give a damn about brand.

I spent a long time avoiding some brands because they didn't have pure in house movements - then picked up a Ulysse Nardin.....man I love that bad boy. Rolex isn't getting any wrist time now!

    Re: Riddle me this.....

I agree... cost is not the only factor in making a great product. Thought and passion have a massive presence as well. This week is the first with my PRS-14 and I think its utterly fantastic. Noticing how elegant the second hand looked this morning and (as a designer) appreciating that someone (Eddie) will have spent time perfecting it for his creation... just as the designers would have for Rolex, Omega etc, etc.
I think that must be why we are all here, love an eye for detail and the thoughts and developments of the industry.

BTW - That is a seriously impressive flipping list Murph!

    Cheers

    Re: Riddle me this.....

I don't like calling it watch snubbing, but I recon you're on to it....

Along the way, some figure that it is less about the prestige of the watch brand and more about what it does for you. Some of the Seikos are really nice and other brands less prestigious brands are as well.

Not to bash any of the great watches out there, I just recon that the joy of a watch is as much the research, time, and energy you put into the chase and the joy of ownership is not something that comes from you surroundings...

I couldn't care less what my snobbish collegues at work recon of my watches... They don't know jack anyway - or that is, they only know what the fancy adds in the magazines tell 'em... :?

But each time I look at the time, when wearing the right watch for me, I just enjoy it and it makes me smile ... :)

And btw - that's a LOT of watches you've gone through... I am behind the curce, apparently

Very well actually. The forum has become way too busy for one mind to cover it all. I don't know how Eddie manages it. The watches have been getting much better.

As for becoming a father ... well, you are going to need someone to push your wheelchair at the other end. :D

    Re: Riddle me this.....

That's an impresive no. of ins & outs MuRph

myself I've been in the game for 7 years or so,
I have nowhere near that amount of flips/turnaorunds, I always buy with the intention of keeping..but due to financial circumstances I have had to let go a couple of my more expensive buys (panerai's :( ) but I'm quite content with my collection where it is now, Tag quartz, g-shock, oris, seamaster, Seiko Frankenmonster, manual wind pilot's watch

as to your question regarding snobbery or cheapskate...as a yorkshireman you can probably guess which way I sway, but that said having owned my Seiko for a couple of years now I sometimes ask myself why the need to pay more?
Although I do still lust after something that bit more special than what I currently have, therefore savings in progress for maybe a seadweller, 5513, Nd sub or the Linde Werdelin I always wanted....

If you are getting a 757, perhaps a UTC, but don't bother with the Diapal. If you are looking at Diapal look at the EZM-10, it might be 50% more than the price of a 757 but I think it will give more than 50% of the pleasure in the long run.

The 757 is too Damaskoy. :P

I admit to being interested in the EZM10, because I loved my EZM1, but I am changing careers to be an executive protection specialist, and I will need something that can look the part in a suit. I miss my GMT2C, but I sold it to pay for training.
