This thread is great, i am back in the land of a smoker and its really pissing me off. Work is manic, I am in the final throws of a divorce and I am just making excuse. Its time to decide and act and stop looking at reason I can not. I have the patches and e cigartte, I am going to go and have one hell of a blow out night this weekend and stop.

This would have been great to do a poll and see what the majority did and how they stopped. Somehow I think willpower might be top

After 35 years I am been clean for 5 weeks. :D

    Method

    Book holiday with family.
    Leave lighter at home
Have last smoke at the airport door - chuck packet away.
Wait until you are just about to rip someone's head off and have a double squirt of nocorette spray.
    Repeat, repeat, repeat

And ta da!! I have not smoked for 5 weeks.

    Do I still miss it - yes - a lot :(
Am I better looking - no
Have I put on weight - no
Does my breath stink of smoke - no
Have I stopped coughing in the morning - yes

    Sorted :D

Wtf is this ? Patches and E-cigarettes ? You metrosexual op ? If Freud was alive today he would categorise you under the heading of beta phaggot.

I packed in 8 years ago. SWMBO got breast cancer and it hit me like a brick. Glad to say I'm still off the tabs and (crossing everything) the cancer has played fair :)

Re: How did you stop SMOKING?

For all those that have recently quit. First off congratulations and well done, you've acknowledged that you had a habit and are taking positive steps to overcome it. I won't pretend it's easy, when I quit 15 or so years ago I had the occasional pangs for nicotine for a couple of years afterwards. However stay focussed and strong and you can do it.

Think about taking your kids to the park and not being out of breath.
Think of kissing your partner knowing you don't reek of fags.
Think of being around a little longer to see your grandchildren grow up.
Think of your cloths no longer stinking.
And last but no least, think of the money you can now spend on watches

I found that rediscovering cycling really helped. I could monitor my improvements which spurred me on no end and it helped to keep the weight off too. So if you played a sport or enjoyed a physical activity think about trying to get back into it.

Keep up your good work and relish every nicotine and chemical free breath.

    Cheers,
    Gary

+1 on Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking...

for people that have kicked the habit but still find themselves wanting or thinking of cigarettes, I can't recommend Allan Carr enough.. Quite a slim book, very easy to read - but he explains exactly why you still crave fags, and completely breaks the link in your mind that makes you still want them..
I smoked from age 15 to 39 ( funny, 24yrs just like matt above ), and I stopped through will power for three days - read 'The Easy Way' on the fourth day and have never craved a ciggy in the seven years since then - no matter what the situation ; after meals, ' difficult' phone calls, busy times at work etc...
