I've never been much of a fan of white dials but this one is kinda nice!
I've lost interest in Rolex sports watches over the last few months, but an exception to that is the Explorer. Both the I and II really appeal to me, and whilst I bagged a lovely tritium 14270 a while back I'd pretty much forgotten about it's cousin, the 16570 "Polar".
I've hankered after a really nice tritium piece for about a year or so, and even turned down the offer of a great example a while back because the patina wasn't dark enough to tempt me to take up the offer. However, the recent "Yard Sale" on SC turned up just what I'd been waiting for, and it (a 1993 16570, that is) duly arrived not long ago looking even nicer in the metal than I'd hoped. Complete with box and booklets, and a recent service warranty from Mr Rice to complete the set.
Here's a few immediate shots, still struggling a little with the new lighting set-up but I think they've turned out quite nicely. I can honestly say that I've never liked a watch so much upon putting it on my wrist, and the only time it'll be leaving my grasp is when I pop it over the Genesis for a replacement bezel (far safer than me trying to fill in the black again, and not very expensive to replace).
What do you reckon?

tony it is one of my favourite watches of all time and a true 'grail' for me
ps would leave the bezel as is , i dont think it detracts from the watch at all..
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
like a break in at tony towers for example?Originally Posted by learningtofly

Fantastic watches the Explorer IIs. If I had to narrow the collection down to 1 watch for all occasions, my white dial would be it. Great choice, Tony - enjoy!
The creamy lume looks great against the white, and i'd leave the bezel as is (but maybe buy a tidy one so you know you have it to swap if you wanted to).
Very nice Tony (sure I say that about all your new arrivals).....
......and those pics will come in handy for next week on SC  (couldn't resist).
Excellent piece Tony and beautifully photographed. I don't think I can tire of looking at photographs like this, even if I have seen hundreds of similar watches. Your passion for your hobby is revealed in your photographs.
The lost black infill on the bezel would bother me though!
Lovely - and I'd leave the bezel as it is - it shows it's been worn and gently rubbed with a shirt cuff!
It's like when you buy a second hand car - if it's been steam cleaned to within an inch of its life, you wonder what terrible oil leaks they are trying to hide.
That is the best looking watch I have seen on SC for a long time, congratulations Tony.
Very nice, quite understated too.
I for one for leave the bezel as is. If you get a new bezel and the numbering is very black it might look a little odd with the fadded lume plots etc.
Lovely, and if it were mine that bezel would stay just where it is.
Agree - would also leave the bezel as isOriginally Posted by seikopath
Great choice Tony and lovely pictures. If there is one watch I wouldn't part with, it's my polar 16570, a fantastic watch and hugely underated IMO.
Hi Tony
Nice dial & handset on that one....I can see the attraction :)
Leave the bezel alone....
Best - Neil
Nice, but your old black dial watch was was nicer IMHO
Andy
Wanted - Damasko DC57
Amazingly for me, because I don't like explorers at all.....I think that is top notch.
Well if you're going to have the bezel replaced why not try and do it yourself first and if you like the outcome you've saved a trip / few quid :) If it were me I'd infill with an off-black enamel so as not to get a stark contrast - black with a drop of raw sienna.
Great looking watch there, nice trit patina 8)
Some nice pics as usual. Really like the color of the lume as well, I think it complements the white dial rather well.
It's also a grail of mine, Tony, and a watch that really pops. I'd be happy as Larry with one on my wrist.
Considering the variety of Rolex models you've had on your wrist, Tony, those are very strong words indeed, and make me want one even more.Originally Posted by learningtofly
She's beautiful, lovely creamy lume......and your photos, always stunning.
That is a stunner. Congrats!
Loving that Tony. I slightly prefer the black dial in the older EXPII's and the white in the new model - but the lume on that is exceptional in relation to most. 8)
It's just a matter of time...
My favourite watch ever, tony.. And that one has lovely plots (vicar)
They go great on leather too. Experiment!
He's said it loads of times - will be on SC shortly......... :lol:Originally Posted by Kiki Picasso

Looks really nice Tony and another one for keeping the bezel as it is, no need to change it imo :)
I must admit, when I saw that in the yard sale I ignored it. Now, with these pics, I desire it. I don't know why?
That' a nice example Tony.
Personally not a fan of the mix of black edged plots and 'white' hand set. Would prefer all black or all white. However, love the patina of the lume.
Enjoy :)
Stunning, one I certainly would like to buy as a gift to myself when I hit 40; keep stopping myself buying now as it will be cheaper!
Off topic, but beautiful photography too, as always; any chance you could PM me the settings you shoot at for me to try, thanks
Matt
congratulations with this stunning watch
Stunning! Can't wait for you to flip it!
“Don’t look back, you’re not heading that way.”
Nice catch, Tony - like the aging. I'm still a big fan of the new Exp II - they keep calling my from shop windows.
lovely creamy lume... replace the bezel and you'd prob recoup some funds from selling the original :)
Really like the cream lume, don't like the silver handset, it should be black for this dial.
Yes, the handset is from the original dial, which is included with the watch. Skyman kindly provided a link to a discussion on the subject.Originally Posted by I AM LATE!
Not an issue so far as I'm concerned, as the dial can be switched back at any time. I may try to source a black handset with the right patina, though.
Tony, sorry no offence intended, just adding to the history of the debate regarding this particular piece and it's somewhat unusual genes.Originally Posted by learningtofly
Nothing more than that, and not IMHO that weird.

But as presented and posted here (without the benefit of any additional background being provided), it's configuration is just not correct.
Nothing really, just opening up the discussion. Why so confrontational?
You don't get a post count like that without being confrontational....

Yes, you really have a great sense of humour. As for our brief exchange above, which began with you posting a link to another site without any kind of comment of your own, go and look up the word "disingenuous".
I didn't realise there was so much discussion about my ex explorer 2 which I bought with the black face but I had forgot all about it when I listed it and that is why I sold it without the original face.
It is hardly surprising Tony thought it had black hands when you see my original photo!
All this from an error on my part :(
