no, its pretty easy, depending on the watch its just a case of taking off the hands, undoing the dial feet screws and lifting it off, replace the same way.Originally Posted by gjob

How much of a task is it for a professional to switch the face of a watch? Is it major sugery?

The watch in question is a Baume & Mercier Capeland
I'm interested in brown strapped watch and quite like the copper face but i'm not sure i'll still like it in the future. The white faced model looks nice but i'd like the option of switching at some point.
Is that a bit mental?

no, not really, we all like different things, if it speaks to you, and you feel like you have to have it, go for it. :D
My next watch will be IWC but I'm already planning for the one after
The only things to bear in mind are the dimensions and the position of the dial-feet. If it's the same model of watch but in a different colour it should be fine, although I was once asked to swap the dial on a watch where the movement had changed at some point in the production run and I ended up having to use dial spots as the feet were in the wrong place and re-soldering them would have damaged the dial.
Other than that, it's a five minute job, pretty easy to do it yourself, if you want to save the cost of a watchsmith

Perhaps I should buy the spare face at the same time? Remove the variables and all that??
I have had the face of my breitling changed twice when serviced, just to give me a different colour!
Sounds like major surgery to me, a fresh newbie :) I'd never touch the inside of a watch...
