    Better red than dead....1680 content

    Hi Guys

I recently decided I should upgrade things a bit....and went for a '72 Red 1680 Submariner as I really fancied the 'Top Hat' plexi look.

These can obviously be a bit of a vintage minefield - so I picked my seller very carefully and the result speaks for itself :)

I know the cyclops isn't everyones cup of tea....but personally I really like it and can now try a superdome on it if required 8)

This 1680 came with a cracking dial & matching handset and complete with the silver datewheel with flat 3 and open 6 & 9's - it's a lovely example !

How many other reds have we got on here then ?

    Best - Neil

Yep, Red rules with me too - also a 1972 and also from Jason if I am not mistaken  Four of my watches went for this beauty.
Here is one of his pics plus one of my own.

    Lovely, Neil.

I've had a few lovely vintage pieces from the Rolex stable, but not as yet a red; I'm thinking of mixing things up a bit, though, and bagging one. If it was as good as yours I'd be delighted.

    Very nice sir.
You should have a 72 9315 for that too....guess what I've got in my parts box!

Lovely dial and hands on that one - just perfect for a 40 year old!
It's just a matter of time...

these reds are beautifull, really like the top-hat...that 1 word in red makes it a very different watch than the white 1680's.

My red 1680 sub from 1973, not the best picture, but the faded insert shows up well - seems to be getting a blueish look

This model is absolutely beautiful and timeless.

How much would a decent example like this cost?
I may sell my DSSD in the future to fund one of these...

Quite a price range, depending on age, condition, completeness of set etc, so anything from £6k to upwards of £13k or so. This site is a great source of info.

That is an IWC Beta 21 "hummer".
Realy high quality 1969 piece with an untra rare movement, as in the Rolex OysterQuartz, Omega Stardust (below it), Bulova and others

It is also for sale at the right price!

Some lovely watches there. I always thought that if I got one, I'd want the domed acrylic rather than the top hat, but the latter does look pretty good, too...

The 1680 didn't come with a domed crystal (it needs to accommodate a cyclops)... the top hats are gorgeous anyway, though.

Thats a 'Top Hat' Watch period very nice!

Re: Better red than dead....1680 content

    Did someone say 'top hat'?

Although the 1680 came fitted with the 'top hat', I think that I'm right in saying that the domed crystal from a 1665 SD can be fitted.

Yes, the Top Hat is lovely - I almost prefer it to a dome, in fact...

Although I have no intention of changing mine, that would be interesting to see.

Really think the red sits off nicely against the black of a sub. Very tempting!

I really like the Red sub, and the one you found looks good and has an fine dial. I am tempted to partly trade my 5513 for an red sub, but I still like my 5513 - still thinking.

I was sorely tempted by that watch - it's a beauty... if it was a 1969 I'd have pulled the trigger. I bought the Swiss only GMT instead
