Yep, Red rules with me too - also a 1972 and also from Jason if I am not mistaken  Four of my watches went for this beauty.

Hi Guys
I recently decided I should upgrade things a bit....and went for a '72 Red 1680 Submariner as I really fancied the 'Top Hat' plexi look.
These can obviously be a bit of a vintage minefield - so I picked my seller very carefully and the result speaks for itself :)
I know the cyclops isn't everyones cup of tea....but personally I really like it and can now try a superdome on it if required 8)
This 1680 came with a cracking dial & matching handset and complete with the silver datewheel with flat 3 and open 6 & 9's - it's a lovely example !
How many other reds have we got on here then ?
Best - Neil

Stunning. Shout me when you're ready to flip :D
“Don’t look back, you’re not heading that way.”
Very nice sir.
You should have a 72 9315 for that too....guess what I've got in my parts box!
mine says hi (top left)
(Found a better one)
Lovely dial and hands on that one - just perfect for a 40 year old!
It's just a matter of time...
these reds are beautifull, really like the top-hat...that 1 word in red makes it a very different watch than the white 1680's.
Very nice. Here's mine, a 1971 mk V:
Love the open 6.
My red 1680 sub from 1973, not the best picture, but the faded insert shows up well - seems to be getting a blueish look
And on the wrist:
This model is absolutely beautiful and timeless.
How much would a decent example like this cost?
I may sell my DSSD in the future to fund one of these...
Quite a price range, depending on age, condition, completeness of set etc, so anything from £6k to upwards of £13k or so. This site is a great source of info.

OT: what's the square dial in the top right?Originally Posted by watchlovr

Those really are gorgeous but I'd have that top hat scratched in no time

Nice one Jonny.

Coincidentally I wore mine for the first time in a few weeks today. Mark IV, 1970ish. Dressed down on a NATO 8)
And a hello from my '71/72 Mk.V
Wow, I do love red sub's the combination of all the detailing is perfect and just goes so well together.
Yep some nice watches there chaps ,I enjoyed mine whilst I had it and it was a lovely thing but the new owner was most unfortunate as within a couple of months it was stolen :(
Some lovely watches there. I always thought that if I got one, I'd want the domed acrylic rather than the top hat, but the latter does look pretty good, too...
Thats a 'Top Hat' Watch period very nice!
Did someone say 'top hat'?
Although the 1680 came fitted with the 'top hat', I think that I'm right in saying that the domed crystal from a 1665 SD can be fitted.
Always been more of a Sea Dweller man, but those Red Subs are very, every nice.

Wanted - Damasko DC57
Great hat :P

Although I have no intention of changing mine, that would be interesting to see.Originally Posted by Bravo73

Really think the red sits off nicely against the black of a sub. Very tempting!
I really like the Red sub, and the one you found looks good and has an fine dial. I am tempted to partly trade my 5513 for an red sub, but I still like my 5513 - still thinking.
I was sorely tempted by that watch - it's a beauty... if it was a 1969 I'd have pulled the trigger. I bought the Swiss only GMT instead :lol:Originally Posted by flame

Never been a fan of Rolex, but these Red Sub are really nice!

Stunning watches
Very tempted now!
It's amazing what a little bit of grey can do to your appearance...
Very nice one! Almost bough one RED from 71 myself couple months ago, at the end Daytonas at same price won :-)
This thread is quite funny....as I don't have a red sub!! :(
Well not today anyway...who knows what tomorrow may bring :D
