Very unusual. The dials are something else!

Hi all
Watch out for cultural slip ups.!
Finland is not actually classified as Scandinavia, its just Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
Plus IKEA is Swedish, not Finnish.
Thanks

What about Iceland ... not part of Scandinavia, too?Originally Posted by deano42

What counts as Scandinavia varies, I suspect in part due to territorial claims one is inclined to make. ;)Originally Posted by Crusader

Thanks, Bob - the Estonia part was completely new to me. :)
By the same token, the Polish Baltic Sea Coast might be considered a part of Scandinavia - after all there are hordes of Swedes ferrying there to go on drinking binges (excellent beer, too), continuing the proud tradition of their Viking forebears of traveling abroad for a bit of fun. :P

Opps, sorry. I knew IKEA is swedish, but didnīt know about Finland not being considered scandinavian.........why do you take the hint then? :D :DOriginally Posted by deano42
New to me - though I sincerely hope it is due merely a lack of command of the English language rather than a lacuna in my general eductaion - was this as quoted from the Wikipedia article:
:shock:The Scandinavian Mountains block the mild and moist air coming from the southwest, thus northern Sweden, northern Finland and Finnmarksvidda plateau in Norway receive little precipitation and have cold winters. Large areas in the Scandinavian mountains have alpine tundra climate.and in the summer it can be really farty!

Let 'er rip, that's what I say!Originally Posted by Crusader
Actually, I think that it is because the people there are so polite, and concerned about the welfare of their fellow citizens. They all wait until they get a chance to visit the tundra, when there aren't many people about, then they "let 'er rip".
Best wishes,
Bob

For once and for all ; Scandinavia is just Norway, Denmark and Sweden !!! :P
But when we talk about the NORDIC countries, we include both Finland and Iceland.
Have a nice W.E. to you all ! :D
Lots of talk about dials but no pics, well, here are couple of handmade apetizers:
The man Stepan Sarpaneva is a genious and comes from a very well known family in Finland with a rich heritage in both arts and indutrial design. Now this guy aint a diletant but has had extensive schooling and training in traditional watchmaking in both Finland and Switzerland and has worked for pretty well known brands before creating his own makes. He is not only a talented watchmaker but also a great guy to deal with from what Iīve heard from mutual frieds and some email converstions Iīve exchanged with him.
Ive seen and handled his stuff and make no mistake about it - it rocks :!:

Finland is Scandinavian country at least according Finnish people. I know that some see the difference between "Nordic" and "Scandinavian" or even Lappland vs. another parts of Norway/Sweden/Finland.
Historically it is so that if Finland is not part of Scandinavia then southern Sweden and Norway are not either. Remember: Finland was part of Sweden one day.

True, that I will never forgive either Stefan on this forum :DOriginally Posted by JP (Europe)
I think it is futile to argue whether Finland is a part of this or that. What is important to remember though is that we are the ones who kicked the big neighbours arse when shit hitted the fans in the 30-40īs and came out of it as winners. The rest of the Nordic/Scandinavian countries?
Iceland, which I know best, was invaded by GB in 1940. Control passed to the US in '41. Although there was a defense agreement associated with the change in control, the negotiating sides weren't exactly on a level playing field. I was there from '62-68 (IIRC) as a result of that agreement.Originally Posted by JCJM

Well, I was just pointing out with the tongue in cheek that Fins have endured more than the rest of the Nordic/Scandinavian countries together. You know that the swedish army used (still does?) to supply the armed troops with hairnets? :DOriginally Posted by rfrazier
Aah... I think this might turn ugly when the Stefans will read this :ogre: :ogre: :ogre: :ogre: :ogre: :ogre: :ogre: :ogre: I can hear them coming, armed and dangerous, hair tidely tucked under the net :D
It may lower the tone, but I've been to both Estonia and Latvia, and they are full of beautiful young girls and ladies.
That is all....
Foreign ships on firing exercise with the US Navy sometimes moored at my Coast Guard base (if they were lucky, it was in a fabulous location) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The first time I saw sailors with really long hair I was pretty shocked. But, I got invited on board and got exceedingly drunk in their mess, so all was forgiven. ;)Originally Posted by JCJM
(I shouldn't have been shocked by long hair on sailors. Nelson, after all, had a pony tail. ;))
