    Moonphase watches

    Evening chaps,

Although I have finished my current watch buying splurge, I am looking at buying a 'dressy' moon phase watch next.
    I really like this Longines;

And it's a probable winner but wondered if I've missed anything.

Budget wise, I would imagine 4 to 5 grand tops.

Would need to be 40mm minimum and not too thin.

    Thanks in advance :)

Quite a rare watch, but the Zenith Grande Chronomaster GT is a bit nice... (as is its slightly pricier Grande Chronomaster XT stable-mate).

The GT is 42mm with an El Primero Cal.4001 and the XT is 43mm with a Cal.4009. Both have Moonphase (or the slightly more subtle so called "Moonage" in the case of the XT), along with Full Calendars and Flyback complications and either should be doable at or about your budget... if one crops up that is.

If you don't mind buying pre owned you could get one of quite a number of JLCs in that budget

I like a moonphase watch that showcases the feature, rather than just an additional complication on a chronograph. I prefer complete calendars and a JLC version like that above would be my choice. I also love the Perrelet big central moonphase models.

    Cheaper but lovely.

For me, the Longines retrograde is one of the most interesting moonphase watches for the money - this was discussed recently in another thread, but any other brand would charge several times the price for something similar. Similarly the Perrellet is an interesting alternative choice (and these can be found at bargain prices AFAIK).

More mainstream is a JLC, like the Calendar above, the MUT, or the Master Moon (which I have - but difficult to find). These are all very neat, classic dress watches.

    Re: Moonphase watches

It's an interesting complication but how do you set it accurately?

Some lovely moonphase JLCs posted in the thread - that's what I would be looking for with a 5K budget.

That JLC is lovely, and I do prefer the cleaner, more modern designs - and that Spring Drive moonphase on the SC at under £2k does look rather nice. (No connection with seller.)

Beautiful dress watch - are these still being made?

These have been out of production for quite some time now (5+ years), being replaced by the more complicated, but bigger (and busier) Master Calendar (like Java's).

There tend to be relatively few that come up for sale - I don't really know if it was never a big seller, or people just want to keep them!

BTW This is my current JLC obsession. The new 8 Day Perpetual - they've cleaned up the dial a bit, and made the case slightly smaller compared with the preceeding model. Arguably, a tradtional moonphase display would have been better than the pointer. (Not in the £5k budget though!).

I was looking out for a 7751 based moonphase and found these. I'm on the iPad so linking pics is beyong me for the moment. All below your budget but a bit different. I love the master moonphase and it is on my list.

Personally I find them a little fussy, but then I'm not really into dress watches.

However, I am rather taken by Sarpaneva's Korona K3 Moon Watches...

That Ball looks pretty damn good.
Lovely clear dial with a touch of colour - very nice.

    Thanks on e again chaps.
Some of those JLC's are stunning. Like I said above, I won't be buying many more watches for a while so it gives me plenty of time to think about it (and change my mind for something else!)

    GP Laureato Moon

Stunning watch and can be purchased LNIB at your budget, unfortunately I don't have a picture of my old one.
