Warrant or The Arrows are heavy metal.

So a nice clear definition is required.
For me Heavy Metal is MC5, Motorhead, Metallica,Iron Maiden, Anthrax,Saxon, Judas Priest.
Napalm Death, Slayer, Dragonforce, Soul Fly, Sepultura are thrash or groove metal.
Purple, Zep, Stones,Stooges,Aerosmith, The Who are Rock
    Cult, Wildhearts, Therapy,Terravision are Indie
Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Blind Melon are Grunge
Iggy Pop, Pistols Class etc are Punk

    Warrent are/were just shit! :D

You nailed it my friend. There is such a clear difference between metal and rock/hard rock. Calling bands like Zep, VanHalen/Hagar etc. "metal" is just silly.

My Top 5... after careful considerations and in no order:

    Sabbath
    ACDC
    Iron Maiden
    Judas Priest
    Metallica

    Sabbath

    Slayer
    Pantera
    Sepultura are the holy trinity

But for those moments when none of those 3 are heavy enough, you can't beat a bit of Obituary, Entombed, Napalm or Bolt Thrower

    Metalica? Pfffffft

Just playing Ride The Lightning as I read this. "For Whom The Bell Tolls" still rocks!

I'm not a huge metal fan, but Metallica does cross over to the mainstream from time to time. Is it a bad thing it appeals to people who wouldn't call themselves Metal fans? Why would that piss off the purists? "Nothing Else Matters" did more to advertise Metal to the masses than anything in recent history, unless you want to count Linkin Park, which is watered down 'Nu Rock' stuff leading into heavier gear.

They'd make my list anyway! Probably because I don't know more than 4 other metal groups!

Just got a couple of Killswitch Engage albums for my i.pod and they aren't much to write home about imo.

I'd put them up there. Went to see them at the o2 a couple of years ago and definately one of the best bands ive seen!

For such a popular Genre...Metal seems hard to define.

Metallica have always been up there, pretty much defined thrash metal for me, seen them 4 times last being download last year still incredible, though megadeth are musically a bit more diverse :).

    AC/DC
    Black Sabbath
    Iron Maiden
    Saxon
    Scorpions
    UFO

Great bands I discounted, not because they aren't good enough, but don't fit my personal definition of Heavy Metal include
    Deep Purple
    Def Leppard
    Led Zeppelin
    Rush
    Creed
    Alter Bridge
    Thunder
    Whitesnake
    Dream Theater

Yep, I can live with that! But there's one band unmentioned thus far: Humble Pie. When mentioning bands as Sabbath and The Zep, Humble Pie need to be mentioned too. Not like today's metal perhaps, but certainly one of the 'founding fathers' of heavy metal in the early 70s.

AC/DC are Rock 'N' Roll. Angus described Van Halen as a Pop band. Best 'Metal' band has to be Motorhead.

And Lemmy always called Motorhead a blues band who just play blues very fast.
