    Watch shopping in Paree

I'm off to Paris en famile next week, they are looking at all sorts of cultural guff, and I intent to fill the time horologically, if possible.

Does anybody know of any good shops for used and vintage watches in Paris?

    Cheers

    Richard

    Can't help sorry.
But I spent 3 months working there last year, and would be interested to see any answers.

There are a few other posts from memory but I'm sure a search would throw them up....

SimonK posted this a while back:

On rue du Faubourg St. Honoré near the Elysée Palace (tell the trouble and strife you are going to take piccies of the Presidential palace) there is the shop of F P Journe then if you head east past Hermes there is a Glasshütte Originale Boutique.

Keep heading east on rue du Faubourg St. Honoré past the Wempe (mentioned above) and on the same side there is a second hand dealer called Watch Addict - wonderful window display of vintage pieces but laughable prices; I suspect the clientele is more interesting in offloading cash than the actual prices. On the other side of the street is Chronopassion - THE high end dealer sans pareil - with rare brands - Hy Moser, DeWitt, Richard Mille, Urwerk, De Bethune, MB&F, etc. Next door there is a Hublot boutique.

Incidentally, rue du Faubourg St. Honoré is packed with clothes and jewellery shops, so no problem for the ball and chain to window shop as well.

After Chronopassion keep heading east and there is an Audemars Piguet boutique and then an Omega boutique. At the Chopard boutique you can turn left into place Vendôme for Breguet, Blancpain, Rolex, Jaeger, Richard Mille, Patek, Chopard, Paiget, Cartier, plus a couple of high end ADs with Lange & Sohne, etc. If you cross place Vendôme and head up rue de la Paix on the right hand side there is a street called rue Daniel Casanova (Charvet is on the corner - you can pop in and order half a dozen bespoke shirts) just a few yards into this street there is an AD with lesser seen brands - Maurice Lacroix, Favre Leuba, etc.

Carrying on up rue de la Paix there is, of course, Cartier, but also Mont Blanc, Panerai and Jaquet Droz boutiques.

Incidentally, If you carry on along the rue du Faubourg St. Honoré a bit instead of turning into place Vendôme, just after Goyard (expensive luggage) there is a second hand shop called Miller. They always have a large selection of higher priced ladies watches from Rolex, Cartier, Chopard, etc.. I have it on good authority that this is where the city's high class call girls offload there unwanted 'tips'.

There are some good second hand dealers but a bit spread out. Near the Madeleine church (north east corner) in rue Godot du Mauroy there is a well stocked second hand place called Charly. If you go there I recommend lunch at Fauchon, or for a special treat on the west side of the church is La Maison des Truffes and La Maison du Caviar - outrageously expensive at night but doable, fixed-price lunches.

Near the above mentioned F P Journe shop (and opposite the Bristol Hotel) there is a shop called MMC - selling high end second hand or long waiting list stuff from Vacheron, Patek, etc., with prices to match.

Rive gauche there is Antoine de Macedo on boulevard St Germain for new and very nice vintage pieces and not so far away in rue du Bac (near the Seine) there is Romain Rhea - where Olivier Martinez bought Kylie a vintage Rolex Oyster as an engagement pressie.

Paris is one of the safest and most enjoyable cities in the world - you can safely walk back to the hotel late at night without fear. Two warnings though; first - look both ways when you cross the street, even a one way street, and don't assume that it is safe to cross just because you have a little green man at a pedestrian crossing. And secondly watch out for pickpockets - don't leave your handbag or camera on the back of or under a chair in a café, and be especially careful on a busy underground train - the pesky Romany kids are extremely efficient.

    Bon voyage.

    Just to update my post quoted above;

Specifically second hand and vintage -

Time Addict and MMC rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré have closed. MMC still has a branch in rue Marbeuf with some very nice pieces in the window, but the shop is just opposite the Hotel George V, a favourite haunt of Russian gangsterpreneurs and African despots, so the watches and prices reflect this.

Charly in rue Godot de Mauroy (north-east corner of place de la Madeleine) has a very well stocked window of all sorts of classic and vintage wrist and pocket watches.

Also next to La Madeleine, but towards to south-east in rue du Chevalier de Saint George there is Cresus, a second-hand dealer with a good reputation and reasonable (albeit dealer) prices.

Antoine de Macedo (a restorer and dealer of high repute) has two shops, both near St Germain - one in boulevard St Germain near rue de Bac (mixture of second-hand and new) and one in rue Madame, near the church of Saint Sulpice. Carla Bruni bought a second-hand Patek for hubby and former president Nicolas Sarkozy here.

Also in rue de Bac, not far from Antoine de Macedo is Romain Rhéa, one of the best known second-hand watch dealers in the capital. Olivier Martinez bought a Rolex for Kylie here when they got engaged; even though the engagement is off apparently she kept the watch, the little minx.

In the marché aux puces at Saint Ouen there are (or were) a couple of good dealers - one in marché malassis and one in marché dauphine.

In rue de Miromesnil there are two second-hand watch shops; one - MikaelDan - between rue la Boétie and the place Beauvau with a good selection of higher end pieces (if you continue along this street towards the place Beauvau - towards the Elysée palace in fact - there is a fantasic antique camera dealer, a veritable Aladdin's cave of Leicas, Nikons, and other rare and fascinating stufff). Same street but the northern side of rue la Boétie is Aron'son - another long standing and reputed peddler of vintage tick-tocks.

If you happen to be around the area known as Villiers in the 17th arrondissement, there is Olivine, who always has a good selection of tasty looking Rolexes - 5513, 1675, that sort of thing.

All the above have websites, and because I'm a nice bloke, here they are

Place Vendome and Galerie Lafeyette are both obvious ones.

I was in Paris this time last month and stopped into Romain Rea (http://www.romainrea.com/) down near the Museé D'Orsay. Boy oh boy do they have some beautiful pieces!

I can remember one shop that was mainly for vintage watches.

Come out of the Place Vendome and keep walking down Rue St Honore in the direction of the Champs Elysees. You'll go past a few watch shops, but keep walking down for about 10 minutes or so. Evenyually, you come to a square with a crossroads, next to what looks like a Government building. Go across and past aone make boutique, sorry, forgot the one make now, and there is a vintage watch shop further up on the left. I popped in there about 12 months ago, but to be honest was greeted with quite a few Gallic shrugs, although I seem to remember they had some nice bits and bobs in the window.

Sorry the directions are a little vague, but my memory aint as good as it used to be

Yes, follow SimonK's tips and you will have a wonderful time in Paris;) I would encourage you to visit the Jaquet Droz boutique too (near Vendome) as I don't think there are many of these around the world!
