A mini leatherman count?
Very useful piece of kit.
What, where, why?
And curious as to why so few people I come across do carry one.
A mini leatherman count?
Very useful piece of kit.
leatherman sidekick or
Swiss army knife or
Spyderco UKPK.
Use them everyday too.
Often throw a UK legal Spyderco in my pocket daytime, being out and about on sites it's amazing how often a blade/pry tool comes in handy.
Only time i'm without a small, no-locking folder is when i'm out socialising of an evening. Every other time i have one on me.
I used to have a Leatherman Micra on my keyring but took it off in the end as I ended up having to remove it and leave it with security almost every day when going to meetings.
I always have a small Swiss Army knife with me - you know one of those small Victorinox jobbies. Comes in handy now and again.....
Leatherman electrical squirt on my keyring. Once found myself in a queue fro a London club with it in my pocket but security didn't find it. Always making use of it.
Usually small men under 5"5 carry a knife, strange statistic.
Every day ...
I carry an Opinel always (apart from my appearance at Rochdale Magistrate's Court, but that's another story).
I call it my clapshot knife. Clapshot, for those who don't know, is the amalgamation of faeces that accumulates in the wool surrounding the anus of sheep. It can mat, even clog the orifice, and may leave the animal in considerable distress or even potentially fatal harm from disease.
So those of us brought up on a hill farm or in a sheep farming community carry a knife with which to cut away the clapshot thus relieving the animal from distress.
This tale is related every December as I cut up slabs of Butlers Farm Lancashire cheese with my clapshot knife for the Pub Quiz Team Christmas Extravaganza evening. I follow it with "anyone want another slice?".
Usually carry a a Swiss Army knife, sometimes carry Leatherman / Gerber multi tool depending on where I am going. Today I am carrying only this as I am office bound and can go to my car or stores if I need something more hefty;
Sometimes - if I am going camping or the like - I carry a Wenger Ranger 51, but given how lethal this thing looks (and is really) I wouldn't carry it generally...
I always carry a small twin bladed Case knife. I keep both blades very sharp and use one exclusively for scraping my clarinet reeds. I usually carry it in my clarinet case, except when I'm gigging abroad, when it goes in the hold. I bought it from a forum member a while back and it's deeply useful and an excellent tool for reeds.
Well, if I'm going sailing, I carry several of these:
Micro swiss army knife on each of my sets of car keys (so basically everywhere except when I'm not driving, e.g. the pub)
Boker Subcom 42 when I'm going for a walk in the fields etc
Leatherman Charge and a Van-Hoy Snaplock when out shooting and need to peel a rabbit or two
I don't carry a knife, I sometimes carry a spoon if I'm having soup for lunch at work.
I'm not offended by the idea of people carrying cutlery.
Yes, some kind of small folding knife pretty much all the time. Mostly gets used for getting into packaging, which seems increasingly designed to stop you getting at whatever it is you've bought.
Today a Fallkniven U1.

Skating away on the thin ice of a new day
I have a Leatherman Micro on my car key-ring, I use it most days for opening parcels etc.
I found my meat cleaver was getting a bit heavy as I got older so now days I always carry a Leatherman in my 'man rucksack'
I carry a Leatherman when I'm on an install. Very useful tool.
Rod
My suit jackets always have small ticket pockets, the ideal place for a small Swiss Army knife, so yes I carry a knife every day.
The thread seems like a perfect place to remind ourselves of the Crocodile Dundee approach to knives...
"That's not a knife. This is a knife!"
Yes, I presently carry a Kershaw Echelon. It is small, light, very sharp and different. Your mileage may vary...
Interesting! I have an Opinel in my camera bag for removing offending leaves and twigs if I'm trying a bit of macro and a Spyderco Grasshopper on my key ring, which is extremely useful :)
smallmen.co.uk ? No way, where that link would take me I dread to think!
Interesting responses and good photos!
Like a watch, there's nowhere I'd go without a knife. In the UK, I have a Boker Trance 42 for every day and a pretty Le Thiers Chambriard compact for when i'm in Sunday Best
A Leatherman multitool. Usually a PS4 or Juice S2.
don't even own a knife other than a stanley knife for work purposes
people who carry knives around every day, what do you use them for ? other than specific purposes. if you work on site i can see it'd come in handy, otherwise i've never felt like i need one
Dunno much about knives, but I hear this one is celebrity-endorsed...
My bad...

I work on and drive old cars. A multi tool and/or a small knife are as essential as WD40, so I always have a little UK legal Boker in my jeans and a Gerber multi tool in the car boot.
But the thing I use my Swiss army knife for every day is cutting out pieces of watercolour paper. In my job I go through the stuff daily, and the high quality paper comes glued inside the blocks, so you need a sharp blade to run along the edge to cut it out.
There is an exemption in law, the blade has to be 3" or less and capable of folding ( in law this means not able to be locked open) so a "slip joint" knife.
Any knife that doesn't comply with the above you MUST have a valid reason for carrying. Valid reasons are hunting, shooting, fishing and work not in the pub/club/shop.
Have tried a few mini multi-tools and small SAK's, but keep coming back to my old Leatherman Micra.
Why ? - because as well as a small knife blade it has something just as usefull in normal life - a decent size pair of scissors that you can put some effort behind.
Tried the squirt ps4 and others, but the Micra keeps topping the charts for me. I dont carry any blade bigger than keyring size, purely because i have no need of it, tho i do have a leatherman wave in my tool kit.
I am not "offended" by the idea of anyone carrying a legal blade, as it is the person who is dangerous, not the knife and a nutter will always improvise a weapon anyhow.
I have a tiny Victorinox manager knife on my keyring - goes with me everywhere and gets lots of use.
Even pruning roses
I've got loads of bigger ones (all legal carry) but they only go out when I've got a good reason - hillwalking etc.
I use a small victorinox as my keyring. Knife, scissors, pen, usb, toothpick all in one!
To help people out who don't carry knives! Opening things, slicing things, trimming things; if you can get past the view of a knife as a 'weapon' and realise it is a 'tool' it will open up all kinds of possibilities. The amount of times i've been asked 'Why do you carry that?' and then, within hours the shout goes up 'Does anyone have a knife?' is scary. Be prepared.
Don't go too far into the law. If the blade has a non-locking blade under 3" long, it is up to the Police Officer to prove that you should not be carrying it or are carrying it for non-legal purposes. If it is fixed blade, a lock knife or over 3", it is up to you to prove a valid reason for carrying it. If i'm bushcrafting, i carry a fixed bladed 'Sheath knife' with a blade of 10cms on my belt as well as a medium sized axe. I have a valid reason for carrying them. If i carried them into an Asda on there is no valid reason.
Carry one every day? No, never found a need to, either above or below water.
Usually have a Leatherman in each of the cars, but cannot recall the last time I used the knife function on any of them.

Ah, a man with a minion to do his cutting, slicing, piercing and opening for him. Lucky. ;)
Here's my everyday blade.... I'm 4 foot 2
Four foot two? You are a tiny assassin who's found this and learned how to take photos...

Personally, I only carry one when attending a local TZ GTG. You can't be too careful.

Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
Leatherman Kick on the belt(mainly for the pliers and screwdrivers), Wenger Soldier in the pocket(mainly for the superb awl it has and the bottle opener), Victorinox Watch Case Back Opening Knife also in pocket(mainly for opening packages, levering small stuff, but also for cutting fruit), Swiss Army Classic on my keys(just in case for some reason I don't have anything else. All are UK legal carry and are used every day for something or other.
If I am venturing out of town then it's SOG Multitool, SOG folding knife and Victorinox Swiss Soldiers Knife.
I carry an Atlantic salt at work, and a leatherman in the kit bag/ tank bag when I travel anywhere.
