We have Heinz but Waitrose are also very nice they have a slightly more spicy barbecue sort of flavour.

I've tried a lot over the years, and was always a Heinz man, but these days I go for the Waitrose ones as I "think" I prefer them and they are considerably cheaper. I should get the wife to do a blind test on me one day.

Depending on what they are going with I may add a healthy dollop of BBQ sauce when cooking them too.

Although during the baked bean war I set up a taste challenge and people preferred the 4p can of Safeways Saver beans!

Aren't they just the broken ones from the bottom of the Heinz vat?

My wife says beans on toast is just for breakfast and at a push lunch. I maintain they're a perfect evening meal.

I've always fancieed making an old fashioned crock pot full from scratch, a la cowboys.

    Ingredients

400g dried haricot or cannellini beans
    3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
    2 red onions, finely chopped
150g pancetta or smoked streaky bacon, finely chopped
    2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
    400g can chopped tomatoes
    2 tbsp dark muscovado sugar
    3 tbsp cider vinegar

    Method

    1. Soak the beans overnight. Drain them, place in a pan, cover with fresh water and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Cook for about 45 minutes-1 hour until tender, then remove from the heat and set aside for 30 minutes. Drain well.
    2. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the onions and pancetta and cook for 6-8 minutes. Stir in the garlic, tomatoes, sugar, vinegar and 400ml water, then tip in the beans. Reduce the heat to low and cook for 1½-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until you have a thick sauce and tender beans. Serve the beans on toasted bread with grated cheese, if you like.

I used to be a Heinz man by default but now have whatever finds its way into the cupboard. Whatever we have, it gets a solid dose of hot chilli sauce so any delicate flavour differences between the brands will be lost on me. I like the sound of Eddie's recipe for home made beans. I might just give that a go this weekend.

Heinz Five Beanz if we're being specific. With a dash of Henderson's Relish as they go in the pan.

Same for me. If you eat beans on toast it probably matters, but when they're with other stuff the difference is too subtle to matter.

We always buy Heinz at home due to being dictated that is the brand we have to buy, if buying for consumption at work Branston wins for me, so I voted Branston.

Standard Heinz, but......add in a level teaspoon each of chilli, garlic and sun-dried tomato pastes (because these days on their own they taste of polystyrene). Yum!!

The choice used to be Heinz or HP, but HP are now made by Heinz and Heinz are pretty watery and disappointing compared back to back with Branston!

I was surprised, but I had a four pack of both in the cupboard, both bought when on promotion and all unused, so it was too good an opportunity to miss.

    Branston better in every respect.

I used to make my own Hot Boston Beans (similar ingredients but with some mustard powder & orange juice), fantastic served with garlic bread and a swirl of Raita! Takes ages to cook - though...

  36. #36
I through a knob of butter in the pan when I am heating them and regardless of which brand of baked beans they taste fantastic!

Backed beans, two rashers of bacon and scrambled eggs on toast - a meal for any time of the day imo
It's just a matter of time...

branston here - much prefer to heinz

but recently i've been making my own (boston baked beans - using hugh fearnley whittingstall's recipe) and they're very easy to make and taste superb!

  39. #39
Been away from UK for 15 years, would have said Cross and Blackwell, guess its Branston now.

I remember years ago, hearing about a study - when asked, most people said they prefer Heinz, but in a blind test they actually preferred Cross and Blackwell.

  40. #40
I'm always amazed at the numbers: about 1.25 Million cans bought a day. Say 200g of beans per can, that's 250 tonnes of beans a day.

May have identified cause of global warming..

  41. #41
Not as complicated as Eddie's recipe... I have Heinz but firstly fry some onions with a dash of pepper. Then in goes the Heinz with some green chillies (only a very small amount!).

1 tin of Heinz, drain most of the sauce (there's more these days than there used to be I'm sure), heat. stir in a knob of butter, salt and lashings of black pepper. Add the magic ingredient. 1 processed cheese slice.

Cook out until the beans soften a little (hard beans? nooooooo), serve on buttered toast.

I pay 1euro 17c for Heinz here, what are they in the UK these days?

Branston for me. Heinz are too runny these days. I shake mine up before I open them, thickens them up, so they dont slide off your toast.

I used to quite like Heinz beans and sausages (pre-horsemeat) but now they're really not very pleasant. Maybe I've grown up finally I'm getting free prescriptions.
