In 1973, my 1680 Red was $337 according to the hangtag.
Thought some of you might find this interesting. Was doing some clearing out and came across some old Rolex catalogue and price list.
In 2004 you can get an Explorer II for £2300, Sub date for 2350, SD for 2440 and Daytona for 3670.
In 2008 you can get the Explorer II for £3040, Sub date for 3090, SD for 3280, Daytona for 4850 and Milgauss for 3180.
In 2011 you will get the Explorer II for £5530, Sub C for 5320, Deepsea for 7070, Daytona for 7490 and Milgauss for 4760.
Unfortunately I don't have price list going back any further than 2004 but I am sure someone else can help out.

GOT...TO...KILL...CAPTAIN STUPID!
Spot on with the 2004 prices. I had a sub LV on order but when I went to pick it up the store manager showed me a SD which is what I left with.
Spot on with 2008 price list ... The year I thought about a Milguass.
I also have a 1991 price list ... The year I acquired my first Rolex a 16233 Datejust stainless steel and yellow metal jubilee with blue dial and yellow Roman numerals.
A watch might not be the best investment but over time you will probably be able to enjoy the ownership without too much of a loss before handing down to the next owner
Frightening, when you think about it !!
But we continue to spend serious amounts...
1991
Explorer - 1,085.00
Explorer 2 - 1,350.00
Sea Dweller 4000 - 1,617.00
Sub date - 1,461.00
tbh it matters little what we could have bough them for many years ago - in 2004, I bought Subs, a Daytona and an Omega Seamaster - they are all worth more now.
It's just a matter of time...
yeah agreed if we all had a crystal ball where would we be now
remember my exp 1 i bouhght for 1800 quid and a subdate at low 2s both bnib in 2004 ish
2k now might just buy you a nice 14060 loose head if you are lucky
who knows what they will be in 5 or 10 ys time
just enjoy them now and see where you go :)

It's not the price differential between 2004 and 2011 I find most shocking, it's the difference since 2008 that staggers me! The rise over those three years defies belief!
Has anybody told manufacturers there is a global recession on?!
What's the thoughts on this upward trend continuing? Can the market sustain it?
I see/read that Rolex (and others) are looking to control supply (demand), limit outlets and differentiate themselves but its hard to see this continuing
i have the original receipt for my 1996 Sub Date and without digging it out, i think it was circa £1800 from memory?
Air-King-Date in 1978 cost £250 - bit left field but I can vouch for the accuracy as it was bought from new from an AD.
“ Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.” HHGTTG
I don't know. It's hard to see how the trend can continue (certainly not at its current rate) in the UK.
Lots of ordinary people are bring priced out of owning brands like Rolex and I think other manufacturers seem to be following suit.
Are they aiming to become a super exclusive brand or is the hike in price being driven by the growing eastern economies where the brands feel the can get away with huge spikes?
Certainly puts in perspective the value of watches like Eddie's creations, and that range of £350 - £1500 or so is where I imagine most of my interest will stay for a while.
