    Which Tudor Submariner to buy? 7928? 76100? 79090? 94010?

I'm currently looking for a Tudor Submariner, requirements are:
    - 40mm case size
    - bleu dial/bezel
    - plexi
    - not a snowflake (I prefer lollipop or mercedes hand)
    - with box/papers
    - steel bracelet (I can always add Nato myself)
    - budget anywhere between 2.000 and 4.000 Euro (depending on condition and type)

However I do see many different versions, all related to age of course. For example I see a 7928, 76100, 79090 and 94010 (and maybe there are even more types). Is there some knowledge on the pros and cons in terms of:
    - maintenance of the movement
    - problems
    - suggestions on the right price

Many thanks in advance for your info

I had this one, 79090 came on a Rolex oyster bracelet (which the rattly end links drove me crazy enough to sell up!). It has a service dial which came on the last of the 79090 models and has the white gold surrounds and gloss finish. I much prefer this non-original dial to the on with no surrounds although I have not seen another like it for sale since...

Also has the lovely plexi with cyclops...

Can be had for around the £1500-£2000 mark depending on bracelet, box, papers etc...

    A couple of gratuitous shots...

Love the blue dial version as IMO helps distinguish it from the Rolex sub (ok apart from the WG version), which is why i also prefer the snowflake. With the balck dialled mercedes hands versions i can't help thinking why not just save up for the Rolex.

Agree on the snowflake, but (that's off course a personal choice) I find the models with lollipop or mercedes hands much more beautiful. That's why I prefer one of these. The black ones are also beautiful, but I already have a number of watches with black dials, none with blue.

Stunning, it was pictures of that watch that first got me hunting for a blue sub :)

My own favourite is the 76100 lollipop, the subtle differences with the plots and the lollipop hour hand do it for me:

    Tudor Sub Love

I've has a few Tudor Subs. 7928 never came in blue, so for merc hand version try a 79090 (date) and non date 94010. Prices vary, but the 79090 will be good value. Try for a full set!

Here are some of mine from the last couple of years:

    94110

    94010 (MN)

    79090s

    Mini

    89190 Hydonaut

    Love the Tudor Subs ;-)

Nice pictures, so iff I understand it well, no 7928, and (I do want date) also no 94010.

That leaves 76100 and 79090 and others?

I also heard once that some Tudors have older movements that rolex doesn't service anymore, and others (newer?) have pretty standard ETA's? What is the experience with that (is it true?), or are there alternatives?

Re: Which Tudor Submariner to buy? 7928? 76100? 79090? 94010?

The only other would be the 79190, which is sapphire. They are available in blue, but the later ones are PRINCE DATE, as opposed to PRINCE OYSTERDATE.
For plexi you have the 76100 and the 79090. If you go for a 76100, try to get one with the lollipop hour hand.

The really early Tudors you may struggle with, but the ETAs are no problem for most watchmakers to work on. All the above (76100, 79090 and 79190) use the ETA 2824 based movement.

You could wait for the new Tudor 'Black Bay', due to be unveiled at Basel in March - reissue of the big crown!!

    Good luck!

Are there also some ideas on reasonable prices for a 76100 lollipop or 79090. Both complete with box and papers in a good condition (condition 1 or 2,unpolished)?

    My 76100 lollipop fom '87 (I think)...

Currently worn on NATO and with the original bezel insert - a great summer watch.

But I bought it (on SC) with a new bezel insert and on the original folded link bracelet...

You pay a premium for B&Ps on vintage - are they essential to you, as without you should be looking at comfortably under the £2k mark ?

I think Tudor Subs are very good value. They are not fake Rolexes and have the same look and feel as the more expensive 5513 and 1680. Also, when revision is due I'd rather have a 2824 inside so I do not have to send it off to an official RSC.

I chose a 79090 on a Rolex 93150 bracelet and fliplock with Tudor 380B endpieces. Have box and papers, too.

Whatever Tudor Sub you choose, can't go wrong in my opinion. If you regret it, you can always sell it without loosing a pound.

    Good luck!

I agree with Ross - I know you said you'd prefer acrylic but if you come across a blue 'Prince Oysterdate' dial/insert 79190 then I would give it some serious thought, it is a very rare Tudor Submariner (just try and find one?).
It wears very well (almost exactly like a blue 16610), the blue is a lot lighter in colour than the 79090 - it almost looks like a faded vintage insert.....I rate the 79190 very highly indeed.
Best of luck in your search.

I would hunt for a 76100 with original hands or if you want a watch without a date a non-snowflake 94010 with original lollipop hand is nice.

I have 2 right now (I sold the black 79090 in the foreground about 6 months ago). The blue one is a 76100 with RSC tritium replacement hands (old and do not glow) and the black snowflake is a 94010. RSC still services them. RSC serviced all of these watches within the last 4 years, the latest being the snowflake in February of 2011.

These coming weeks I'll be looking at some blue ones in real. Hope to find one of them nice enough for a fair price. I know B+P will cost a lot more, but I prefer to have this one complete.

The older model, so in this case the 79090 with plexiglass and 'Prince Oysterdate' on the dial. Presumed both are in the same condition, ofcourse.

I decided on the 79190 being in very very nice condition and as it's a keeper as would the 79090 then tbh it really would make no difference to me.So a close look at my collection with a mind to thinning out me thinks,2 of which are going after contacting members via wtb.

The blue sub looks great, as does the black one - now you have the best of both worlds. Enjoy!

    You lucky bugger.

I really like the Tudor Subs but prices have been getting silly for a while now but at least you can always sell them if you get bored.

    Enjoy them.

I just managed to get myself this one

Nice blue lollipop (actually, it is one of the ones above)

I like the fact that it has 2 unique Tudor aspects, the lollipop, and the blue. And yet is unmistakably a Sub.

It is lovely, and I am really enjoying it on Perlon, before I swap it back onto its bracelet for a while.

OP - what did you decide?

    D

ps - excuse the white balance on the photo, note to self - must use daylight

7016 rose dial for vintage look with functionality (390 movements found in the 7928 are a nightmare to fix, vs the eta 2483 which has parts available practically everywhere)
94010 snowflake for a cool alternative to a standard submariner appearance, but still tool watch purist sensibilities
76100 lollipop hour hand for a functional beautiful watch that you can still service and wear day to day, for pleasure or play.

I really do have a thing for the 79090, and it might quite possibly be the next item on my shopping list. I was originally thinking of the 79190, but the plexi just looks too good.

How can you choose? Each is wonderful in its own way... I have a 76100 black dial and love it but I'm still flipping it....

  41. #41

    How about a 79190?

Here's mine with a blue dial and a not too common silver bezel.
