    "This Is The End"

If you did not grow up in the 1980s or later, this movie may not be for you - - I encourage you to stay away. My wife, who grew up in the '60s and '70s couldn't stand it. Anomaly that I am ('50s/'60s) loved it and consider it among my all-time favorites! That's saying a LOT considering I'm no real fan of Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, or (especially) Danny McBride.

I had read a couple 'headline' reviews that led me to conclude the movie was worth the risk despite a cast I didn't particularly like. I gotta say I was overwhelmed by the imagination, depth, clarity, and entertainment this film tackled and delivered. Super kudos to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for writing and directing this near masterpiece.

I can't say I was "all-in" with some of the VERY crude teen humor thrown in (and believe me, I'm no prude!), but it wasn't enough to sidetrack this brilliant work. I won't get into the plot or ending other than to say you thirty-somethings will have reason to chuckle at the end.

RECOMMENDATION: If you plan on seeing this movie, the less you know about it the better. Avoid watching movie trailers/previews, reading reviews, or discussing with friends who have seen the movie. This is one of those movies IMO where the less you know going in the more you get out of it.

Oblivion is pretty good and well worth a watch.
'Parker' is very good (much better than I expected).
    and.....
Hangover part 3 is Grrrreeeaaat (that's Tony Tiger great)!

Just watched Movie 43. It's possibly so bad that it's good, but more likely just very bad. I like stupid humour, but this is particularly poor. It's more the fact that you feel like you're watching a car crash, wondering how so many big (A-list) names got involved. I wondered whether I was missing some kind of in-joke, or other "point".

I enjoyed Midnight in Paris, the recent film directed by Woody Allen. Unusual and charming.

They've been out for a very long time, and I've had them for some time, but didn't get around to watching them until yesterday. Great shoot-em up fun, with some mean guitar playing.

    El Mariachi
    Desperado

Now I have to get the third in the trilogy: Once upon a time in Mexico.

    Best wishes,

Finally got around to watching Old Boy before the american remake hits - very cool but very VERY violent film - not one to watch with the girlfriend!

I enjoyed Man Of Steel. Thought it was a good take on re booting the franchise. But the Superman films with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder had a certain....chemistry between the leads that I really loved.

    not bad though

Saw Brokeback Mountain on TV last night since seeing it in the cinema (6 years ago I think).

Wonderful film, good acting by the late Heath Ledger especially, beautiful backdrop and touching.

    4 stars.

Watched Snowtown (2011),not knowing too much about it. A pretty uncomfortable 2 hours which I experienced rather than enjoyed. Nevertheless, it's based on a true story, is an Australian film and is well-made and superbly acted, especially the main guy. Had echoes of the 90s Kiwi film, Once were Warriors. If you like your films gritty and real (literally), then this is for you.

Apparently there is a 45 min dovumentary on YouTube ('The Bodies in the barrels') which fills in some of the blanks of the film (which can be tricky to stay with sometimes due to some parts of the story not told, seemingly random characters popping in and out etc.)which can be watched beforehand. But if you want to keep it a real surprise, watch it straight off.

Recommended but not for the faint of heart. My wife got upset with me for 'choosing yet another film she doesn't like' plus the uncomfortable content in it and went to bed early. Be warned.

I was filled with disdain today when I read that the next Bond film is going to be directed and written by the same tossers that did Skyfall. I was so disapointed with that drivel after the excellent Quantam of Solace. I bought the Skyfall DVD on Blueray with great hopes but I probably wont even bother getting the next one.

I've just watched Cloud Atlas twice in two days, which at 3 hours a pop is no mean feat. Thoroughly enjoyed it too, especially the second time when I had more of an idea what was going on.

Saw "I Give It A Year" the other night. Unremarkable rom-com story, but with hilarious set pieces. Unsophisticated, juvenile and quite rude in places. Recommended.

Saw that last week too. It reminded me why I hate RomComs (this was an attempt by me to please the OH - but she didn't like the British style of RomCom ). Some parts were a little amusing but mostly just annoying 'humour' not far advanced from Four Weddings and a Funeral or Notting Hill. I'd give it a miss.

This is the first time I ever gave up on a movie due to over the top violence. The toenail scene was just too much.

Yes, I can understand that - it was pretty horrible..but I don't think there was too much other outright 'violence' as such. Definitely some other very uncomfortable subject matter though. I didn't once consider not watching it through to the end.

There is one film that I have ever considered doing that for though - Irreversible, a French film which had two of the most horrific scenes I can remember - an opening scene where a guy is literally beaten to a pulp and a really drawn-out rape scene. Did stick with it though and it was excellent.

Finally got round to watching the excellent Senna this weekend. It was interesting seeing footage of F1 from sources other than the BBC. Still remember watching that particular race on TV. Looking forward to seeing Ron Howard's Rush.

Pacific Rim - Turn your brain off type of film. Transformers vs Godzilla really. Ron Perlman was the best thing in it, and should have been in more of it.

Irreversible was very interesting, despite the rape scene. Of course I would say that since I am a fan of Gaspar Noe. Other films of his that I can strongly recommend are "I stand alone" and "Enter the void".

The issue with the Snowtown violence was that it would have been just as effective if the violence was implied. It made me suspect that this was shown because "torture porn" is very popular at the moment.

    .
Same here, watched it over the weekend.

Heard a lot of good things about it and it didn't quite live up to the hype. Still pretty good though.

I did wonder until about half-way why there was no Murray Walker with his 'AYEEEER-TON SENNA' but the footage was apparently all taken by permission of Bernie Ecclestone from a big vault in Biggin Hill.

Watching Senna go round the last lap at Imola was painful. I almost couldn't watch.

    The Room.
If you appreciate the beauty of a poorly made film, then this is a worthwhile view. The writer/directory/producer apparently raised $6 million to make this picture. Unfortunately, no effort has been made to focus (ha ha!) on acting, continuity or dubbing. Easily the best worst movie of the 2000's.

Saw Cabin in the Woods last week.

Worst film I've seen in at least a decade.

Rubbish concept (done before and bodged together from films like The Truman Show and Saw, but in a really poor way).

The last half an hour was laughable and lost all touch with reality, literally.

    Avoid!

I loved Skyfall, when the lock up door opens and the old Goldfinger Aston is there and the old theme music came on my hairs stood on end in the cinema, guess I'm still a "wee guy" deep down haha

Watched Gang Story (orig. Les Lyonnais) on the back of a recommendation from here (and after it came down to £3 on my Find-Dvd pricewatch). Very stylish, if occasionally a little formulaic at times and an absolutely cracking performance from Gérard Lanvin as the principal.

^ Olivier Marchal, the writer/director is an ex-flic, so his stuff is supposed to be based on his own experiences, albeit romanticised a bit for the cinema. He is the same chap who created Braquo, a great TV mini-series if you haven't already seen it. In fact season 1 was great, season 2 was a bit too far-fetched. It stars Jean-Hugues Anglade, he who, erm, 'performed' so admirably with Beatrice Dalle in Betty Blue.

    Me too.
There is no better film for showing off a surround sound system with good base.

I just watched The Wolverine last night. Not a bad film, but I was hoping for more to be honest.

This Bond's episode is a rather subtle mix of vintage (ah ! the Goldfinger Aston Martin...) and new (it's obviously a post-Bourne movie), plus other ingredients (some scenes are aesthetic [Macau, Shanghaï], which is rather new).

By the way, I'm always surprised by the song in the island : Boum by Charles Trenet, a french singer who, I assume, isn't well known on your side of the Channel ;)

I love 'La Mer' and 'Boum' by Trenet and both are connected to two of my favourite films: 'La Mer' in Peter Chelsom's brilliant 'Funny Bones' and 'Boum' in 'Toto le Héros'. Both films are masterpieces not just because they contain the music of Charles Trenet.

  46. #796
I re-watched that the other night also. Great to see it again, especially after watching the TV series. It really is such a well done movie. I should probably re-watch Manhunter as well, it's been years.

Just got back from The Wolverine. As usual, my 13 year old son loved it, but I'll give it a 'reasonable' rather than a 'good'. Thrashing a story/character getting a bit old and stale by now I think.
