Sinn EZM 3. :D
A pal is looking for a watch - we took a look at the IWC Mark XV Spitfire (he prefers that to the classic one, no accounting for taste) but ... he can't stand the bracelet. I told you there's no accounting for taste. Now he's decided that he likes integrated-looking bracelets, a la Om*g* Constellation. Apart from Sinn 244 (too small), what else is:
- automatic;
- uncomplicated (no day, chrongraph, power-reserve, moonphase etc)
- steel;
- black faced;
- tough (preferably anti-mag, secured crystal, good WR);
- no bezel;
- integrated or hooded lugs;
- 38mm to 40mm in size;
- not the IWC Ingineur;
- branded (but not Seiko, Rolex, Tag, Oris, Longines)
Alternatively, what (apart from SB3, Sinn anything, DA36, Orfina, Mark XVI) could be considered vaguely comparable to a Mark XV, preferably Swiss, available new?

Sinn EZM 3. :D
Not sure, but Limes?
Best wishes,
Bob
Ventura, we have bezel problems :(
Bob, I thought the same, but I had a look and nothing leapt out - plus it may not be enough of a "name".
Something else I forgot to add - he wants to know if it's possible to design your own watch, and then get some reputable firm (he likes Om*g*) to build it. I suggested that if they could it from the parts bin they might accomodate :D but I really don't know of anyone bar MKII.

Whoops, I mean the Sinn EZM3 on the bracelet. I prefer it on the speedbird Nato.**
Omega planet Ocean is a bit big, but the Seamaster may be good, with the black dial etc ?**
The Seamaster Aqua Terra is a beauty too.
**EDIT I SAW THE BEZEL POST
Ventura,
I should have mentioned - he can't stand the pointy minute hand on the Omegas - neither can I :shock: we agree for once. Also the triangular indices are not him. We went through Star Hill's watch boutiques like kzak-fruit through a short grandma (per Terry Pratchett) a few weekends back, when we could have been watching the F1 qualifying on telly, and nothing seemed likeable bar the IWCs.
Hence the Q on DIY watches.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ;) tell him to get a loan...
Timothy,
oddly enough I posted him a link to a Royal Oak immediately after posting the Q - but I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the price!

PRS-53. He can save serious moolah and then hire a escort.
If he buys the IWC, I'll buy the bracelet off him! :D

Every watch a story.
Sinn seem happy to switch dials, hands, etc if you want to do a small customisation, and seem to charge essentially "at cost" - so if there's a Sinn that almost fits the bill, and another of their watches has the appropriate part, ask them for a quote.Originally Posted by Kamraj

this is a tough one
the brand restrictions you've listed really limit the possabilities, the problem is it sounds like you're looking for a minimalist sports watch that doesn't have the trappings of a sports watch.
everything i can think of has a bezel, which is on your "no fly" list
kobold has some watches that fit the minimalist bill to a tea (I think the seal is antimagnetic, black dial, no date, total minimalist, but it definately has a bezel....and a big one at that.
How about glashutte??
When I was shopping for a IWV mark XV I was often tempted away by the navigator series. The navigator date is very similiar in style to the IWC spitfire (but with big date function), if you really don't like the date then there's the senator navigator below.
Have you looked at watches like the Schauer Automatik, or some of the Glycine range or there are a few from Fortis that seem to tick all the boxes?
Well it's 42mm but everything else is ok. Movado automatic :D
Hi,
How about a Bathys Hawaii 100 Fathoms automatic? They're basically black (or alternative) dialled dive watches, with no bezel, large date, and great lume. The can be had in both black and silver PVD'd cases. They are also only slightly larger than the size preferred. I can't post any pics, but Google the Bathys website for many good shots.
Anomino Polluce?
If you click on the gallery there is a great blue dial version.
Thanks everyone for the helpful and interesting suggestions.
Seiko_Diver, we saw the GO on our speed-run through Star Hill, and both thought it a little "busy", plus it's on strap. I suspect that if it were not for the bracelet, he would go for the IWC.
Abraxas, Grayman, fascinating, esp. the Hublot, and the Bathys, but again I think it's a bracelet thing.
Ray, I think Anonimo may prove a little fancy for this chap - I was thinking EWC Panhard, but again the absence of bracelet is a pain.
I think it's time to collar an Omega AD and ask what the factory can do about "this sorry scheme of things entire". That or Sinn.

Did anyone suggest Limes? Some of their models have hooded lugs and they're going to be very well made. I've got a feeling Eddie sold one a year or so back?

Skating away on the thin ice of a new day
Dave,
I thought about Limes, but forgot about the Outback sold be Eddie - long gone, and discontinued. But wait! There is a Limes dealer in Malaysia, who may have old stock. Bad news - they are in my home town, many miles to the NE (name translates as "New Fort", located in the far NE corner of the nation, the natives speak a bizarre and indecipherable dialect of the national language, and are fanatical about the local football team, who never win anything. Sound like anywhere in England?). Good news, they may have NOS, and I have contacts there. I will get on the blower, and put it to my fussy friend - who will probably mutter about wanting a Swiss Name. Many thanks.

I'll second that... a year and a half ago, I asked them to combine dial, subdial hands and chrono second hand from one watch with the case/movement/minute and hour hands from another watch, and it set me back by 60 Euro. I think that's more than reasonable.Originally Posted by thenikjones
