I am a goldsmith/ Cad designer / Workshop manager for a small luxury jewellery brand.
Editor of a car magazine.
Training Manager. I enjoy the variety as no two requirements and therefore products are the same.

in the sausage business!
Semi retired, but a care assessor when forced out of the house
Sit on my arse mostly and try to do as little as possible. I'm highly skilled.
Hi Jeremy
A burner removes the excess on the castings, when the steel is poured in to the mould, it starts the cooling process and as it cools, it shrinks so a reservoir of steel is placed at strategic parts of the mould (over the thickest parts as they take the longest to cool)..
These reservoirs are called risers but we call them 'heads' without them the castings would be hollow as the steel feeds in to the lower parts of the mould..
We clean and then remove the heads (along with any flash, and the feeders) using Oxy lances and HiLo 3' cutters..
Here's a pic of a casting that's just come out of the moulding pits, the heads are the round bits on top, the ropes are hung on the trunnions on the main head, the feeders (or runners) are the bits that are sticking up at the r/h side..
We used to have to clean them using wind hammers (that's what's done me joints in!!) now we have an excavator fitted with a hydraulic pecker, it's much quicker and easier on the body!!)
Another part of our job is opening the gates of the ladles, here's a (Rubbish!) pic of us pouring five ladles in to a job but there is another top up ladle that goes in when these have stopped running,,
There are three ladles standing and two hanging in the cranes and a top up to follow making the casting almost 600tonnes in the black...
Sorry for the poor quality but I think I took it on my phone plus, it's quite dark in the foundry! (and i'm rubbish taking pics )
We also open up bores for machining (saves months of machining in some jobs along with thousands of pounds for the machining!)
This one is opened up twice, firstly at around one metre dia, then to 1.8m then it's stood on it's end and we cut a taper at slightly over 2m deep and around 20cm from the outer edge (It ends up like a funnel!!)
The plug that comes out!
My mate acting daft but also giving an idea of scale, he's 6'1" tall
We also shape jobs too to lessen the amount of work needed..
We shaped this last night, there was a chunk to remove from the other side too..
Another job that we finished a couple of weeks ago, the heads were removed, it then went through to the fettling shop where those lads will smooth out any burning lines that were left using an arc air machine, this leaves a totally smooth finish!!
Cheers, john
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ thanks for the pics John, very interesting job there.
That wouldn't be a certain 'Finish'ed goods manufacturer would it? (Only 'pun' I could come up with the brands... )

I'm a workshop controller in a busy Land rover main dealer, however the title covers many jobs from organising 15 belligerent technicians to making the tea.
Not much since the company decided that a team in Beijing would be cheaper than my group.
Soooo..... anyone looking for an embedded software engineer with tons of experience?
Yeah, that's what I thought :-/
I. T. Like most people these days :-)
Lloyd's Underwriter, which in my case means i basically insure Oil Rigs, Wells & other stuff that has a habit of going bang/sinking/colliding !
My job title is Lead Process Engineer.
I work for a well known oil and gas company, but spend most of my time in Contractors offices, assuring the engineering work they do for our major projects.
Fire investigator amongst other things, but really enjoy it
And
I design, engineer and manufacture electronic products in the UK for other people.
Portfolio Manager for a UK Asset Management Company
maseman
Funeral Director sold in July 2013 and stayed on for the new guys whoose management as they are venture capital based is total crap so got out at the end of 2013.
Been asked to do some stuff for my local MP
At this time a Scrotum scratcher
I FEEL LIKE I'M DIAGONALLY PARKED IN A PARALLEL UNIVERSE
Not telling.
Oh alright, I make these kinda things for a living.
Hey someone's gotta do it!
Cheers,
Gary
You name it, I do it! At least that's what my user profile on the Global Address List at work says after I "updated" it. My role could be described as all things to all people for which I receive little thanks, but that's to be expected and is by no means unique to me or my colleagues - it's just that those of in the job are more likely to be in the firing line than others, perhaps.
Guess at your peril...
I have been in Finance all my life: FX Trading, Private Banking, Portfolio and Fund Management. Nowadays I basically sit in meetings 10 hours per day.
I am MD and owner of a CNC equipment and 3D Printer sales and support company.
I work for Gent...
They used to make these... (You may have seen the clock on dragons den?)
They now are the uk's biggest supplier of commercial fire alarms! Great company with a really good heritage
I manage the commercial strategy, product development and tea making! I like my job (nobody should ever take that for granted!)
Ben
Marine Engineer Officer
Principal of a British International School. Great job and I'm lucky to enjoy my work.
Though reading this I also want to work in that huge foundry...that looks awesome.
Going by some of the stuff mentioned I guess I could be classed as a:
Global Systems Architect for Strategic Management of Spousal Procurement Intervention
(And I do honestly also fill holes, got asked to do one today by a young fella called Ryan)
Very little.
I was at the sharp end of commercial finance (not the end which benefitted from huge bonuses) but the opportunity to take early retirement was just too tempting. I now spend a couple of days a week drinking coffee and perving at nubile young women while working with a professional hangover cure specialist.
But I do have weekends off.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
I work for a bank as a business analyst.
One of the guys here kindly helped me get the job (maybe without realising).
He works for Lloyds (but I don't...). PM me if that rings any bells!
