But surely it will be a flieger, no?

I mentioned in "Watch Talk" that I may have a chance to get some new old stock Eterna movements. Very interesting because they are 44mm diameter! Both versions have small seconds, although on a movement this size, it's not so small.
Two versions are available, this one with 8 day power reserve (only 15 pieces available)
and this one (same size) with swan-neck regulator and 40-42 hours power reserve (65 available).
Here's the same movement after it's been "breathed on", I wouldn't go for the decoration.
Needless to say they're not a cheap movement but I thought it would make in interesting limited edition but what?

You don't want the movement to go off half-cocked. So, a fully cocked one is better.
Lovely movement, by the way.
Best wishes,
Bob
PS. The balance on the first is pretty small. (Lighter, perhaps, but less good for stability.) The seconds would be at 9 on the first, but 6 on the second.

What ever you go for Eddie you have at least one sold to me.
Dunno, but they look cool!

Immediate thought is a big pilot type but at 50mm+ it would be too big for me and I'm 6'5" and 17st.
Pocket watches won't sell, so maybe thats why they are NOS?
I agree, 50mm is BIG! However, IWC sell a lot of their Big Pilot and there's always interest in the original Beobachtungsuhren. The question is, even though they sell does anybody wear them?Originally Posted by raysablade

I've always had my doubts. I'd have thought that 45mm is a practical limit for 95% of men.Originally Posted by swanbourne

Maybe you could sweeten the deal with a freebie
Nice movements!
For me 44mm is max for my wrist.
Maybe you could build a 44mm watch with those mov. but
without a case?
They could make a nice Jacobs watch homage.

Has to be Fleiger - how "small" could you make it with a 44mm movement inside?
Then you have 15 with the 8-day movement and either a silvery/cream coloured dial (a la Stowa Icarus) or a very dark blue dial, and the 65 with the swans neck movement and a black dial. 8)
ALTERNATIVELY, could we have the makings of the first Eddie Platts desk or travel clock? If so, I'm first on the list for an 8-day one please!!!! :D
That's sorted then.
Cheers,
Guy :)
I like the idea of the Beobachtungsuhren but at 50mm I'd never wear it. The largest I wear is an old 600m Ploprof. 50mm round would look like a military jump altimeter. The 8-Day power reserve would make a nice U-Boat desk clock.

As a general idea for a large watch would be to go sans the seconds.

Costume jewellery. Ouch!!!
What about a Richmond Spencer pocket watch? Half-Hunter maybe anyone?
A big Precista pilots watch gets my vote :thumbleft:
Dave
:)
A different "B-Uhren" with DNA of the originals but enough Timefactors to stand on its own (meaning curved legs to wrap around the wrist). I will call mine the "Frozen Hell" in the memory of my late grandfather, a captain of night bomber squad in the Winter and continuation wars trained by the Luftwaffe as were the most of the officers in Suomen Ilmavoimat (Finnish Airforce).
Sisulla perkele! :salute:
If they are 8 day movements, can you display a RDM/power reserve
with no alteration to the movement,
i.e. is there a drive wheel for this function?
.
Does the movement have a date capability?
.
I suppose a Big Pilot homage would go well, but what
about a Panny 1950 homage (respecting all relevant copyrights { :D :D }
or an Egeziano, which is slightly bigger.
.
All the best...

I agree John, the original "Big 5" all have centre seconds but there are plenty of homages around using the Unitas with seconds at 6.Originally Posted by abraxas

Yes, it would certainly make a good "Egiziano" at 60mm but that one had seconds at 9.

Too bad they have subseconds - they would make a great movement for a B-watch homage otherwise :) (Just can't get used to B-watch homages with subseconds  ) How about a marine chronometer homage in the Stowa Marine original/Dornblüth art?
How about something unique? Get it shoved in a squareish case with a monster crown and removeable lugs (not wire) - so you can use it as a desk clock!

My vote would be for a B-uhren or a travel clock. Of course, I'd put a travel clock in the dash of the D90
Yes, and those get enough of the flak they rightly deserve for that :wink:Originally Posted by swanbourne
Some of them are nice mil-style watches, but certainly not B-Uhren-hommages to be taken serious.
Just my thoughts - IMO that would be the perfect use for them.Originally Posted by MichaF
Eddie, when I said "I want one" as you mentioned the movements in the B-Uhr thread, I was serious, btw - even if you decide to make them B-Uhrish...

Eddie, make something for those of us who can't be part of your trench watch project. :) Some of us can't go under 39-40 mm without it looking as though we have a button strapped to our wrist
My wrist can handle 50mm with short or downward curved lugs. Maybe a round Italian? I'm sure those of us who are plus-sized guys would snap them up.
Now if you could fit a power reserve indicator to the Eterna movement, it would be great to have a large wrist version of something like this.
Eddie

Well, there's always this one without power reserve :)Originally Posted by swanbourne

Nice big, blued hands on a crisp white dial, anti-glare sapphire, polished steel case, maybe square.
Maybe you could wear in as a watch too (like the B&R Instrument desk stand in reverse) 8)
This would look great, I love these marine chronometers :thumbright:Originally Posted by swanbourne

A desk clock is actually a very nice idea. How about using Sheffield theme?
Sheffield FC are 150 this year and the Bessemer process is just a little bit older than that as are Eterna themselves. Casing an eight day desk clock in a special Sheffield steel would certainly guarentee one sale here.
Nothing fancy you understand. Just a plain steel ingot and some South Yorkshire glass front and back.
I have recently had the opportunity to wrist-test the big ones ... from the 46mm Big pilot through the 55mm originals and the current Laco replica.Originally Posted by swanbourne
My wrists are a decent 9 inches (each), and I find the 55mm ones too much. The 46/47mm fits very harmoniously, by contrast.
Not sure how big the market is. You would find quite a following on Flying Time (German aviation watches forum), but then again the lack of a central second for a B-Uhren homage would be a definite no-no-no.
Cheers,
Martin ("Crusader")
They are nifty. I think that that design is the only one I like (would contemplate) with a power reserve indicator on the front. Some others put it on the back, which seems especially nifty to me.Originally Posted by Ben265

It's possible to add a power reserve indicator to the movement for a cost of 200 ? per movement. This would make the modified movement 400 ? at cost, which also makes it a no-no.
Incidentally, the watchmaker said it would be two years before he could modify the movements so if anyone is looking for a career change, watchmaking seems to be the way to go!
Eddie

Power reserver indicator is not a necessary must IMHO. Based on the "best b-uhren hommage" thread and looking at the various threads on WUS mil-pil and other pilots watch related sites I am convinced that there is a market for a good quality, handwound, bigsized pilot watch with a good portion of Beobachtungs-uhr DNA on it.Originally Posted by swanbourne
I bet the list would be full within a day Eddie, especially as these would have to be very LE´s due to the small amount of NOS Eterna movements available.
Soooooo... how about it? :)
I fully agree.Originally Posted by JCJM
True, but what does it have to do with these movements (no center-second!)?Originally Posted by JCJM
Of course, one could do something vaguely b-uhrish with them, and I am sure Eddie would make it something nice, but they would still be lacking a major defining feature of a B-Uhr. The fact that other makes choose to ignore that does not really convince me.
OTOH, for a marine model like the examples posted before the movements would be just perfect the way they are.
But perhaps I am just not realising where you see the Beobachtungs-Uhr DNA, in that case please help me.
It is big.Originally Posted by Mercutio

Yes. In addition to being big it is purposeful with no unnecessary texts or other design features except highly legible markers and hands with matching 40´s styling (I´d prefer over sized cathedral hands but any legible design would go).Originally Posted by rfrazier
I would love something of the type 2 dial with those cathedral hands :)
