Not so much a list as my ideal collection:
Omega SM300, SM120, PloProf, MoonWatch.
Eterna KonTiki and the chrono version.
Seiko Marine Master 300m and 600m Spring Drive, 1000m Quartz.
:D
One way to build a watch collection is to have one of each "type" of watch: A diver, a GMT/UTC/multiple TZ, a chrono, a 24h, etc. I recently saw "subdial" (i.e., small seconds) noted as a separate "type" which got me thinking: How many types are there? I you were to build a "one of each type" collection, how many watches would you end up with? This is what my list would look like:
General: Rolex 1016
Diver: Rolex 5512
GMT: Rolex GMT Master
Chrono: Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch
24h: Glycine Airman (original)
Mil: Omega W.W.W.
Dress: <empty slot>
Of course, next week, it'll change :)

Hi
I have been haunted about this subject for quite a while.
My friend came up with the magic four:
- Pilot
- Chrono
- GMT
- Diver
Another friend cam up with the ultimate three:
- Outdoor
- Tool
- Dress
I managed to get it down to the magnificent 7:
- Chronograph = PRS-12
- Diver = Di 300
- Mil-spec (tool) = EZM4
- Pilot = Quad 10
- Dress = PRS-20
- Beater (well its not like I really beat it, I should call it casual) = MMT
I have tried not to duplicate any watches... but the PRS-50 would put another diver in there.
In addition there is no GMT there, well until the DN GMT is there.
But its half the fun dreaming up themes so you can justify getting another watch.!
Thanks

Always a problem, classifying that word "type"Originally Posted by draz

May I humbly suggest a JLC Reverso as a dress watch. It would be a tank shaped watch, and completely different from the others on the list...Your mileage may vary...
I guess neither Rolex nor Omega does much in the way of dress watches, huh :)Originally Posted by draz

Mike, funny you should mention that... I've had the JLC Reverso Duo Face in the dress slot for the longest time, but for some reason decided to take it off that list. I can't say why, it was a last minute, spur-of-the-moment thing. Somehow, it didn't seem to fit with the others, perhaps because it's a contemporary design, compared to all the others which are either vintage or old designs. Your humble suggestion is hereby heeded! :)Originally Posted by Michael in Frisco, Texas
You need a Calendar Watch. This kind of thing. It used to a category by itself. Not so sure anymore.

Costume jewellery. Ouch!!!

The Reverso was designed in late 1920s/early 1930s, I think, so it predates most of your choices :)
I've always thought it would be a great dress watch, but you'd need to try one on as they can look very small on some people. Depending on your choice, it could double as your GMT or Chrono choice.
I like these posts as you generally get to see watches you weren't aware of - thanks for starting it :)
Talking of JLC, what about the Ultra Thin? Most JLC Masters are (in the UK) badly overpriced compared to other markets, but this one isn't as egregiously priced as some.Originally Posted by thenikjones

There's the solution.Originally Posted by draz
Right now, I think I could live with these three. I must be getting conservative as I get older.
Diver: Rolex Submariner Date
Chrono: Omega Speedmaster Professional
Dress: Patek Calatrava Grande Taille platinum/black dial

There's a 1-watch solution, but would make life a bit boring....
Get yourself a Rolex GMT Master II
Waterproof enough to be a diver, smart enough to be dressy, 24 hour hand, bezel can be used as a timer, casual enough with a pepsi bezel insert, classic size and shape....oh, and worn on the moon missions and chuck Yaeger breaking the sound barrier......if chuck wore it in a flying rocket thing, doesn't it count as an Aviator too?
Mind you, 1 watch would be a bit boring. I owned a GMT II for about a month before I flogged it  :)
Pilot/Chrono/GMT =
A Start at a collection of the most often worn ones..
Have a Great day.

I don't think the GMT was around in 1947, so I don't think he worn one during any of his flights in the X-1, or any of his four flights in the X-1A.Originally Posted by RobDad
