Which dermatologist did you see Eddie?
I've had a birthmark above my left ear which I think is a sebaceous naevus and a couple of years ago it started to change, developing a wart-like appearance and itching. Last December my GP referred me tot he dermatology department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield who examined it and referred me to a biopsy. I go the results of the biopsy in March and it was confirmed that it had become a basal cell carcinoma, which whilst not life-threatening, could cause problems if not removed.
I had an appointment with the plastic surgery department this morning at 7:30 AM and I arrived at the hospital at 7:10 AM. After filling in half a dozen forms and answering many questions regarding medication and any pre-existing medical conditions, I went through to theatre at 8:30 AM. The consultant is a bit of a WIS and during the operation, we discussed watches and cars and he said he'd visited my website and forum. It was all very pally and relaxed and the operation was over by 09:40 AM. I have to say that the whole operation was stress-free and much more pleasant than I expected.
Seriously, I very much doubt that going private could have been better.

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
Hope operation was a success and good to hear that about the NHS!
Glad you had a good experience, but did anyone else not imagine Eddie to look like this?!
Good to hear Eddie
Surgeons interested in watches and cars? ....
The worst bit will be how long you have to leave your hair unwashed I expect. When I had some moles removed a few years back I wasn't allowed to shower for 5 days.
It's not perfect but I have had many reasons to be grateful for and proud of the NHS over the last few years.
Good result Eddie, hope it doesn't annoy you like buggery when healing :)
I'm a fan of the NHS - I usually get roasted for saying it but when I've had dealings with them (and they are extensive) I've always felt like I get very high quality treatment. In response I'll probably get linked a blunder story from the Mirror or a tale of woe, but to me they are ace.
Glad it went well Eddie, and wishing you a swift recovery.
Hopefully you don't look too much like this chap....
A good story, but that's clearly a face lift scar.
Hope this means it's fully sorted?
Glad that went well for you. The fact they guy was a bit of a WIS seems a good bonus. bet that helped to take your mind off the op. BTW I'd have got a haircut before I went, it's going to be a bugger to get it cut for a few weeks now!
I'm glad that it was sorted easily and also really glad that you had a good experience with the NHS as an outpatient.
I recently had trigger finger surgery on three fingers of my right hand. A bugger for a pro clarinettist I can assure you, but the quality of service at the time and aftercare and hand therapy since has been outstanding.
I also have had type 1 diabetes for 50 years and am about to start therapy on an insulin pump after having been on multiple insulin injections all my life since the ages of 10 months. The doctors and specialist nurses at the Sussex Country Hospital have been (and I'm sure will continue to be) absolute first class, caring and thoughtful and supportive every step of the way.
Glad it went OK. It must be a relief now that it's over with.
I now get BUPA membership with my job, but the only time I ever felt I needed help quick (unexplained groin lump)the NHS were utterly fantastic with an excision operation inside a week from diagnosis
won't hear a bad word said, personally.
Ouch! Glad all is well.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Mr. P.
I bet you needed that like you needed a hole in the head!
Glad to hear it all went smoothly Eddie.
Glad it all went well Eddie, can honestly say I have had nothing but good experiences with NHS, infact the only time when I was there for any significant time was as a 20-something with a dislocated clavical from playing rugby - one of the nurses even went out and got me a bag of chips on her lunch break
Glad it all went well for you. Have had same problems on arms, legs, and shoulder. In all cases treatment effective and recovery OK.
Thank goodness it was only a basal cell, and wishing you a full and speedy recovery.
Good head of hair Sir !!!!
Old baldy
Glad you got it sorted Eddie even though it gives you a Frankenstein-ish appearance.
People bang on about the NHS but my family and I have only ever had excellent treatment.
BTW Don't forget and scratch your head!
Cheers,
Neil.
I'm glad that it went well and good to see you back on the forum. I wonder how many members thought that today might be a good day to bury bad news hatchets.
In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
Pleased to hear it went well Eddie, stitching looks decidedly dodgy though :-)
I had to go last week with Geographic Tongue and had a similar experience very well organised with no delays at all they really have got their act together.
Good to hear it went well and I hope that doesn't itch like a bugger as it heals...
Jesus!!
That's some wound mate!!
It will at least leave you with a nice battle wound scar!!
Speedy recovery matey :)
The stitching was actually a work of art, after removing the birthmark it left a wound 5.5cm wide and 2.5cm deep which they managed to close without a skin graft. I never had hair on the birth mark so now there will be hair. My brother said it looked like a big cut, or at least that's what I think he said. If anyone can recognise a big cut, it's got to be my brother.
Alex, I couldn't manage to get myself on television like you did when you visited the hospital in Spain ;-).

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
Glad all went well time for you to kick back pull out a deck chair open a bottle of red and toast Le Tour as it wizzes past your front door!
Only problem now then is that your other ear is on the top of your head :-)
Wowzers that's a big ol' wound but the stitching really is neat ain't it? Hope it heals well Eddie.
Glad you're back at Platts Towers with a glass of something decent to ward off the pain.
Always good to hear a positive story of the NHS. Though the system can take some stick I have always found the front line staff to be excellent and a reminder of what we are actually paying for.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I hope all heals quickly and it's not too uncomfortable. I have to say that I'm amazed they didn't shave that area of your scalp as you risk hair becoming trapped in the healing skin and not only can that be painful, it can also lead to infection.
Heres wishing you a speedy and successful recovery sir .
Another job well done on the NHS, I wish you a speedy recovery.
Good to hear positive stories about the NHS these days.
Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Only problem with the Hallamshire is that if you suffer from vertigo a ward on the top floor's rubbish.
Hope all goes well for you Eddie.
I often have scabs on the top of my head, caused by bloody door frames. They should make them an inch or so higher in my opinion!
Hope you are feeling better, plus I am sure Cilla will lend you a hat while things sort themselves self out
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

Good to hear it went well.
Nasty looking wound.

Glad it went well and I wish you a speedy recovery.
Looks like a duelling scar to me Eddie - very distinguished.
Speedy Recovery - in time for your new releases.
