A nice story but A) I'm disappointed he didn't call him after reading all of that and B) I can't believe he lost the card as that's such a shame if it's true.

First class in those days sounds incredible. Imagine smelling all that gorgeous food from the cheap seats!

Yep, interesting, but wow he should have swapped!
Also air stewards must have earned a lot more in those days than they do now?

The McQueen story was good, and yeah, he should have swapped in an instant. I guess even though McQueen was big in his day, the idolising probably isn't what it is now. I mean, I'd not swap one of my watches for a shabby version of the same just because it was Matt Damon's, say.

Have no idea what the point of recounting that first story was though.

Thats a great story, from others I've read McQueen did seem to have far more interest in talking to people who shared his interest in bikes, cars and racing than playing up to his Hollywood star role.

    What a cool guy.

Cool story . I'd have definitely swapped the subs!

I've had one very famous actor offer to swap me his Breitling for my Tag Monaco (Steve McQueen). I gave him a loaner for a day and I wore his Breitling...kept my Monaco didn't like the Breitling...never had.

Cool story, and such a glamorous portrayal of travel back in the day! Flying has become such a commodity nowadays, even if you're lucky enough to fly in First Class it doesn't feel that special.

Nice story which only serves to make it more sad that he had to sell the watch now.

Thanks for posting that - great story!

So sad that Steve McQueen died at 50. :( A true legend.

I wonder what a mcqueen sub would be worth today? Didnt he have the 5512 version?

Someone who donates to the running of the site. Not a chance over here... Just lots of selling old crap.

I don't think it's sad - to me it seems like he isn't especially interested in it or bothered by it.

    thanks for clarifying that.

yes, apparently even mentioning the fundraiser is considered thread spoiling on SC...

Interested enough to remember and tell the story in detail to a bunch of strangers.
