Warning - nuts can be dangerous to children..

My daughter was scoffing some pistachios last night and discovered this. Mmmm.

    Macro:

Fair play to her, she finished the rest of them!

So that's why some of them have a chewy centre.

I love pistachios. Pistachio ice cream was really popular back in the day.

I had one exactly like that once! From Sainsburys.

    A helpful reminder ...

Mouldy nuts (stop sniggering at the back there) can be incredibly toxic - indeed fatal.

    The problem is aflatoxins

Always chuck out old boxes of muesli / porridge and never eat mouldy peanuts - its best to avoid them from the shell unless you know they are fresh. Seriously.

Could have been much worse had you found it half eaten!

How do you know how 'fresh' a roasted pistachio is? Or are you talking exclusively about peanuts?

I understand that the mould that contains particularly high aflatoxin levels grows especially well on peanut shells, but the mould also grows on nuts and grains. I suspect a good approach is to look at best before dates and don't put half eaten packs in damp cupboards for a few months. The Wikipedia entry on aflatoxins is quite instructive.

    Cheaper than buying a kitten.
