Asking a favour from a Northern Soul fan

The recent thread on Norern soul inspired me to clear our a cupboard with a load of cassette tapes... There were two tapes in particular that I was trying to locate containing some great northern soul tracks...

One of my best mates doing my A levels, Ellie, had a boyrfriend who was northern soul dj with an amazing record collection... He kindly did a couple of mix tapes for me that I haven't listened to for years... I don't have anything to play them on and would dearly love to convert them to MP3... However without considerable investment in tape decks etc, it's going to be a tricky process to manage

So... Would someone be prepared to convert them for me and potentially bag some great tunes for themselves in the process? I will lob £15 into the pot if someone comes forward and pay postage there and back... I also have a spare usb to upload the tunes

    So... Can anybody help?

No problem... I'll rip a copy for you and stick it in the post for you... I think I played these tapes to death many years back!

Almost any song you can think of will be out there in MP3 format all you have to do is look for them, I have no CDs or Vynal anymore as its all so easy to get in mp3, Almost every song will be in you tube. If you can be bothered to post a list of the titles and artists and I will find them for you.

I'd considered this, but, rejected it on two counts... Firstly that not everything would be available and secondly that the cuts would be different from the originals recorded on my tapes... I got a couple of them downloaded from iTunes but they weren't exactly the same

How do you copy stuff off YouTube?

I'll post a list tomorrow... And thank you very much for offering to help!

Its having a tape player that's the issue…. I traded in my Walkman for an iPod years ago! And as I'm all set up with sonos…. Even my CD player is redundant! I think my tape deck hit the skip years ago!

Why not play the tracks 1 by 1 to Shazam, it will find them if they are out there.

    Boom.

Its a standalone portable unit, you don't need a tape deck. Saying that, they're not showing on the site now

there are a few I couldn't find straight away but with a little playing about I could dig them up, I have picked one URL but there were many results so look in suggestions for other versions.

you need to download free you tube down loader
    http://download.cnet.com/Free-YouTub...-75219434.html

you can choose to download the video or as an mp3

this is MUCH faster than converting from a tape. Where you have to record each track in real time for two 90 mins tapes that's at least 3 hours work and searching you tube you may get a higher quality version or a extended version or something and you find new stuff in suggestion's.

Slightly off-topic........Went to an excellent Northern Soul night in Wakefield last night! The old Unity Hall has been reopened; last night's gig was a sell out and it was just like stepping back in time. Awesome. Hangover + aching legs today for me, best night out I`ve had in years.

    Crikey... that's absolutely amazing!!!!

just back in from a day out, but, will have a stab this week at the downloading stuff... i take it that it will work on my iMac...?

thank you so much for taking the time to do it...

it's a funny thing music... it really resonates with different people and different times in my life... it gives you the memory of the goose bumps you felt when you first selected that stand out track... I can glean from your posts that you are into your music too, so, will probably have some insight into what this might mean for me, so, for that I thank you a lot!

    All the best,
    Ben

    Just use:

    http://www.youtube-mp3.org/sv

Then you store all tunes in a folder and sync with iTunes.

EDIT: This was the Swedish link a see now. But you get the picture.

    Hi

its doing it on the mac...

it comes up with the following message and then tries to download and entirely different programme

You can’t open the application “FreeYouTubeDownloaderIC.exe” because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS*X.

maybe its an issue trying to do with an iMac... i'm alright at computers but no expert... i have a mate who's a mac specialist, i'll get some advice from him and if not just pay for something (i tried googling it and they all seem to paid for before you can make any progress)

i'll have a stab tomorrow... but, thanks again for you help !

    Ben

Good News and bad news cause it means you will be spending ages and ages finding new songs to download and then importing them into iTunes

Wahoo...! That link worked like a dream and i now have two new playlists on my iTunes...

thanks to Sonyman especially and a nod a wink to Cornelius

    i am so pleased!!!

The TZ fundraiser is now £15 richer as promised... however, not sure i could put a value on getting these two old playlists!

I know people get all schmaltzy and declare what a wonderful place this is, but, I am truly feeling that right now!!!

Just been blasting out my new compilations in my car this morning and am grinning like a Cheshire cat!

Not a million miles away then... I am East Leicestershire too (Bushby)

I wasn't born here either, but, although I escaped for a long while, it sucked me back in again... Blackpool is Northerm Soul connection then?!!! I know Blackpool quite well... I went to poulton le fylde every other weekend for 2 years and have great memories of the golden sands roller disco in the early 80's!!!

I shall get cracking on my albums some time soon or may just employ the kids to do it for me?!!!

I know Richard Searling and have met Ian Levine and quite a few others in the scene so yes there is a Blackpool Connection still but most of my hardcore soul was in Kirkham of all places they were massively into it so that's where it came from.
been in the Mecca a few times but never for Northern Soul I went as a child to the BAe Christmas party's and loved them.
