Well shut my mouth . . . a google search reveals Orient is a subsidiary of Seiko. Never too old to learn something new.
That is a bit complex - there is a Seiko that owns two separate subsidiaries that operate and compete against each other but an oddity I found is that it seems to be Orient staff (or at least staff from that subsidiaries) who makes Grand Seikos and various other high-end Seikos (although they try and obscure this fact).
Isn't it like saying Baume&Mercier and Lange&Söhne are the same because Richemont group owns them?
My mistake - it's a separate sister company to Orient *within* Epson who make the Grand Seikos and the like -
http://people.timezone.com/mdisher/s...ikosdpart3.htmSeiko Epson is one of the "prime contractors" for Seiko Watch Corporation's model production - the other being its sister company, Seiko Instruments. While the headquarters for Seiko Epson are found in Suwa City, the factory which makes high-end Spring Drive, Grand Seiko, and Credor watches for the Watch Operations Division, is located in the town of Shiojiri, a short distance away.
So the way it seems to work is Seiko Watch Corporation (which is the bit that we all know as Seiko) sub-contracts production out to Seiko-Epson and some other bits to another company called Seiko-Instruments.
I am guessing it is the one I've highlighted?
Ah yes. That is how I had previously understood it.
I don't think that table lists all the Seiko manufacturing subsidiaries!
Epson Precision (Shenzhen) Ltd. sounds like a Chinese manufacturing subsidiary. No doubt many Seiko watches are indeed made in China but I doubt it's the only part of Seiko Epson that makes watches.
Seiko is the brand under which the watches are marketed by the Seiko Watch Corp., but all of the Seiko companies fall under the Seiko Group, even though there are two separate entities within it, the Seiko Holdings (which recently absorbed Seiko Instruments) and Seiko Epson. Epson don't use the Seiko branding themselves, but do manufacture movements for some Seiko watches. Orient was recently bought by Epson, so it's logical to assume that there is now some commonality between Seiko and Orient watches as some components might be made in the same factories.
Corporate structuring is fascinating to me as it becomes such a labyrinth. The Hattori family (descendants of the founder of Seiko) are still the common thread as the shareholders in all of the Seiko Group's companies. Although, nowhere as complicated as the Porsche SE holding company and the Porsche/Piech family; the reading about their structure and recent dealings is amazing.

Just picked this up on the SC this week. Was in two minds but I love it!
I don't mean to be rude, but yare mixing things up and confusing people, so please keep it on topic. The information you are trying to find is easily found through Google. There are various articles and thread online that explain the different SEIKO factories, which makes which models and how they are connected. The history is also well documented.
A few more of the SBGX117:
And my latest, the 7a28 aka Bishop
Can anyone advise on the best place to purchase a mm300? I have seen lots of pictures of the watch and think this could be my first ever seiko! Also what sort of price point will I be looking at for this model or any others people would recommend.
If purchasing new then I'd look at one of the well known Japanese dealers (Seiya, Higuchi, Chino-Watch). Some eBay vendors may be decent but I don't know any to name. Creation have the MM300 too but I'm not sure if their price is as good as others on this model.
Second hand, then SC would be a good place to look (when you are able to access it). They come up from time to time here. WUS's SC would probably be good too.
Yes, it was launched last year (following on from the gold accent version in 2013). Mine is from May '14.
^^^ Thanks.
Thanks,
It's a lovely watch and the details on the dial and hands are insanely good. There might however be a chance that I'll sell it to fund something else, so if anybody is interested, send me a PM.
This thread has change a lot of my views on seikos... for the better!
love that SBGX117. Nice.
Quartz + old school design.

Anyone got a SARG they want to share with the class? Just looking at one on Creation...
It's a comparatively rare JDM model, seldom seen outside of Japan - the 7A38-6050 SJS058.
I've been looking to add a decent one of these to my collection for a couple of years now. Many used examples suffer from badly faded red dial printing and worn bezels - particularly the black chrome on the finger grips. This one's almost mint, presumably unworn, with only a couple of light handling marks. Probably one of the best examples I've ever seen. It came up on Yahoo Japan auctions three weeks ago, listed incredibly as 'Junk' (a frequently mis-used term on YJ) and I secured it with the help of a Japanese pen-friend. It came as a 'head only' (and with a flat battery).
From what I've observed, by recording the case-back serial numbers of examples seen to date, the 7A38-6050 was only manufactured for two months: April and May 1985. It never appeared in the Seiko JDM catalogues - neither in Volumes 1 or 2 for 1985 nor 1986. I've written to Seiko Japan (currently awaiting confirmation), but by some stroke of luck, this particular 7A38-6050 appears to have been the first off the production line: serial number 540001.
For the time being, I've fitted it with a Hadley Roma MS3345 silicone strap with red stitching.
Couple of obligatory Q&D wrist shots:

Amazing find^^ congratulations hope it is all verified in time.
nice find. congats.
The other of my two recent early Seiko quartz watches.
This one's a 3003 and the photo doesn't do the stunning dial justice (a match for a modern GS? Probably not, but certainly worthy of comparison!).
A huge thanks to John (of this parish) for putting it back together after I unwisely stripped it to ultrasonically clean the case! Double thanks for working out why the day/date wasn't advancing and fixing it for me!
I plan to post up a more detailed post on this and my "Silverwave" sometime when I'll try and get some worthwhile photos too!
The crystal's quite badly scratched, but it's such a pain to fit a new one, that that might be the way it stays!

Just seen this thread, so I thought I'd pop my 1st ever Seiko on, just a lightweight quartz cheapie, relatively speaking and bought (yesterday) for timing a walk in the park - an army camp actually, so the fact it's a 'military' watch of sorts, is quite appropriate.
