A few years ago I was having lunch in a pub not far from the BBC with a mate who worked on Top Gear magazine. In conversation I mentioned how I thought Hammond came across as a smug twat, at which point the little bloke in a leather jacket who'd just barged past my elbow at the bar turned round......yes, it was the man himself! I felt a little embarrassed (not least for my mate) and there were a few awkward seconds of silence where he looked a bit angry, as if he was about to have a pop at me, sort of measuring me up whilst I sipped from my pint glass. The moment passed but not before I'd noticed various members of his BBC entourage stifling the giggles! - I seem to remember spending the next few hours in the pub, and a couple of free pints came my way so my comments must have gone done rather well with the regulars!
This week's episode is a real tour de force. Great cars, great history lesson, great look into the future and great interviews.
After last week's rubbish, it would be great if every week was like this.
The Dam thing was a bit dull as it once again wasnt a LR being winched by itself
RIAC
Good. Motoring shows don't replace personal decision-making. Entertainment is right, taking the place of the market is absolutely not.
So, last week's Top Gear was (apparently) rubbish and should be cancelled - and this week, very good. Nothing like a bit of consistency, then ;).
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!
Back to nonsense again with the Peugeot feature.
I've got to agree that the Peugeot feature was awful!
Yea the programme was crap again last night, it really is hit and miss these days. I started web surfing in the middle of it and just switched off.
Not sure of the actual timings but it felt like they spent longer on the Peugeot segment than they did on the La Ferrari or the Cayman/Corvette test. Them driving into each other/houses/ditches/garden centres was a waste of time and effort.
Even the 'news' section and other exchanges are starting to feel tedious and over scripted.
I must admit I quite enjoyed it apart from the Peugeot part which has just downgraded the programm again. (why do they have to try so hard to be funny when they're not...just make it a 2-3 mins pi$$ take if you really have to)
The peaugeot thing was spot on. My mate is exactly that.
Gave up long ago when it became clear that everything was scripted and it was becoming more and more obviously contrived. Just couldn't enjoy it any more.
I record the show so I can zoom passed bits.
I have never ever like any of the super cars on any of the shows, but you know when that thing happens with a car, well it's happened to me I have fell in love with

The looks the sound the technology, even the colour.
My god I want one.
If I sell my flats to the housing association like they have been pestering me to I might be able to afford 1/2 a car, anybody up for the other half.

It started off ok and I was beginning to feel slightly more optimistic after a half-decent episode last week, but then no.... what on earth was that Peugeot thing all about? Just awful and I still don't get it?
Another in the 'awful Peugeot scene' camp. Truly dreadful.
That Peugeot scene was cringe inducing and embarrassing to watch. Driving pathetically off the road once might be, well OK to make a point, but to repeat it time after time demonstrates what exactly? They've run out of ideas?
The Peugeot "feature" could have been great, but was total claptrap. There was a germ of a good idea there, that could actually become a semi-regular TG feature - pick a significant maker, do a retrospective on them, drive some of their most significant cars, and finish with a view on their current offerings.
It really is utter dirge now.
When you see an old episode on Dave it just shows how much it's changed.
Its what the unwashed masses seem to want though, going by the viewing figures.
Personally I'm amazed anyone still finds them amusing anymore.
The Peugeot feature was completely lost on me. In fact, I think it is the single most pointless feature I have seen to date.
I was waiting for them to say now peugeot have brought this great thing out but it never happened
I agee. A nice start with LaFerrari, interesting details about those three on the track (That is exactly we are all waiting for!) but then the Peugeot thing was a shame. And totally unnecessary! With these arguments, I can come up with at least 4 or 5 other manufacturers' name who sell their cars to that sort of customers.
I really thought that the Peugeot thing was an introduction to the new 208 GTI! It was on TG's website last December FFS! And Peugeot has launched it as 'The Legend Returns.' But I realised that it was impossible to comment on that car when they filmed this: that was last summer according to the leave on the trees!
Menno
Peugeot, this one's on me:
Hah, I was just about to post something from Stewart Lee on this subject.
Olly Murs though........who'd have thought!
The sound of the Feza was awesome. Got to admit the whole Pug thing was dreadful.
Trouble is it is neither a good motoring show or a funny/entertainment programme. Niche of its own now. Even Clarkson's books are drivel
Yes, the ambulance scenario a was utter garbage but I was rolling about watching the Peugeot story. That indoor French scene with the fake moustaches was hilarious.
Its as though the budget allocation for a show is given to a worthwhile assessment e.g. La Ferrari et al from last night, then they have to fill in the rest of the time with sh1t like the Peugeot crap last night. What was the point of that actually??
I do find myself cringing at the wanton damage they cause to property and getting angry at the TV screen (how pathetic is that at a TV programme) how we the Licence Payers get fleeced by the 2015 Three Stooges.
Question: What are local plod doing about their antics on public roads?? If it was Joe Punter driving like that they'd be losing their licences!
^
Yet again, how do we get fleeced when it makes a fortune for the Beeb?
yep im pretty sure its the beebs biggest export even bigger than the news iirc
I wonder how many return for another dose on their investment :)
Horses for courses. Not a peep out of them for most of the show, but my wife and daughters just about pissed themselves laughing at the Peugeot feature. I thought it was quite funny myself.
If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't watch it.
Maybe its my voyeuristic tendencies that draws me to this stuff!!
Lol
Watching 3 middle aged men desperately trying to be funny is just cringeworthy. Their target audience must be 10 year old boys.
I enjoyed that 308 GTi ad a lot more than TG!
Thanks Menno
My 17 year old son thought the Peugeot bit was hilarious, but I agree with the person who described it as 'cringe inducing'.
I guess it seemed a good idea at the time, but the final result was utter shite.
You could have driven ANY car, Kia, Hyundai, Mercedes, SEAT, it really wouldn't matter and done exactly the same stupid things and they still would have just looked embarrassing...
SIARPC is a bit boring really, exhibiting the Beeb's lack of a decent chat show (I discount Norton...), but well done to Murrs for the lap.
La Ferrari/Cayman-'Vette pieces were what TG does well.
I enjoyed the Ambulance thing, it was inventive and genuinely funny, but the Peugeot one was just awful... (And, no, I'm not a Peugeot fanboy - I had a R5 GT Turbo instead of a 205 GTI )

Answer: It's a big budget entertainment show, not reality. They set-up scenes, have props, direction, production, extras, sound and film crews just like every other show on TV. They rehearse, plan, shoot and re-shoot to get the footage they require.
The production team follow the same processes and procedures all location based shows and movies do, submit method statements, health and safety reports and gain permissions from local authorities.
I did enjoy the bowl of onions on the table in the Pug bit.
I used to work in a Peugeot dealer selling their cars.... I was literally crying with laughter at their antics. Whilst it may not appeal to many, their portrayal of the typical Peugeot customer was spot on. - Taking customers out on a test drive at the garage was among the scariest thing you will do in your life - it was terrifying.
The rest of the program was good in my opinion and the La Ferrari is a sensational car.
La Ferrari. Who's the genius who came up with that name??
