    Nope ;)

It normally has a steel dome over the workings which contains a gas... argon I think.

Aha, see where you're looking - you should rotate the photo by 90 degrees anticlockwise. The structure sticking out on the left of the photo is a pistol grip.

Well done mate! Approx thirty year old metal spray gun (although the ones we make today are barely any different)

I believe it is a centrifuge - didn't really look at it. From the photo I guess it is missing a cover.

As to your other guesses - both are actually on the right track ;)

Some sort of alternating piston pressure thing - says Bose on it so I am guessing it is something to do with audio reproduction testing of speakers?

It is Bose - but that's a bit of a red herring - it's not audio related

Looks a bit familiar! I used something similar when I was an apprentice. My call is that it is a metal spraying gun, molybdenum wire feeds through it and the wire vaporises in a acetylene and oxygen flame and is deposited on the bearing surface which is prepped by cutting a rough thread on it and rolling the thread crests over to key for the spray deposition. It is used in a process to rebuild (generally large) bearing surfaces on stuff like ships crankshafts.

    Sorry to bore you all!

I tried this in my SOTC post which I also blogged, but didn't get too many answers. In the original post I promised a prize to first one to get it right and the offer still stands. Just so you know, the prize isn't too grand, but more than nothing.

What is the tool under the Monster?

For the Bose thing, I'd never have got that so I cheated to find out. Will keep my keyboard shut though.

That's the trouble with a stock image - reverse image lookup makes it all too easy!
But like you, I'll hold my tongue (keyboard).
