It normally has a steel dome over the workings which contains a gas... argon I think.

Although the main part of this one is done, is the thing against the wall that looks like a very old fashioned acoustic coupler actually a small centrifuge?

I believe it is a centrifuge - didn't really look at it. From the photo I guess it is missing a cover.

Looks a bit familiar! I used something similar when I was an apprentice. My call is that it is a metal spraying gun, molybdenum wire feeds through it and the wire vaporises in a acetylene and oxygen flame and is deposited on the bearing surface which is prepped by cutting a rough thread on it and rolling the thread crests over to key for the spray deposition. It is used in a process to rebuild (generally large) bearing surfaces on stuff like ships crankshafts.How about this?

I tried this in my SOTC post which I also blogged, but didn't get too many answers. In the original post I promised a prize to first one to get it right and the offer still stands. Just so you know, the prize isn't too grand, but more than nothing.

For the Bose thing, I'd never have got that so I cheated to find out. Will keep my keyboard shut though.
