Naim Unitiqute - anybody have one?

    Morning gents

I've just purchased a Unitiqute, so I'm now down the slippery slope of streaming & Lord knows what else!

I've not purchased any speakers yet, I wondered if there's any recommendations on what to buy. I fancy B&W, but Rega seem to be popular. I've sorted the NAS drive out, A DBM Vortex, so just the speakers. I won't go down the road of asking about speaker cables & interconnects...

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks

    Adam

Funnily enough I'm hoping to demo a Unitilite/Unitiqute 2 on Thursday - I will probably go for the Unitilite for the extra power. The recommendations I can find for the Qute range are the kef LS50 and Neat Iotas. For the Lite I'm looking at a pair of PMC Twenty 21 & the Neat Motive @SE/2SX - the PMC DB1 may also be a good fit for the Qute. From B&W possibly the 685 S2.

I guess the only way is to go and test drive them all and see what works and to ensure the Qute drives them ok.

I have heard the Neat Iota with those Naim products and thought they were a very decent match indeed. Neat have always made musically interesting speakers.

I have a pair of Neat Iota and they are cracking speakers for their diminutive size. If I have any criticism of them it is that they are a little bass light. Mine are wall mounted on brackets and the wall proximity does help to reinforce the bass a little, but if you really like to shake the room then you may want to look at something larger.

I've also had a pair of PMC DB1i in the past (as well as the floorstanding GB1i) and they are superb little speakers too. I very much like PMC speakers for their clarity and uncoloured sound.

I cannot claim to have any experience of the Naim Unitiqute or pairing of the speakers mentioned with Naim kit, as I'm currently running a Denon mini-system, having 'downsized' from Roksan Caspian, which I really miss.

Another vote for PMC speakers, they are superb, whatever series you pick in the range you can't go wrong

I have the PB1i but the smaller 'Fact' range get rave reviews

Get yourself a demo of a few of the brands mentioned here before you make a decision

    How much you wanna spend?

    What do you listen to?

Guru Juniors are supposed to be a good match with the qute but I've not heard the combo myself.

Have you had a look around the Naim forum, there are a few suggestions on there?

    Aren't Neat recommended by Naim?

The speakers are going up in the Gods due to lack of space. I do like a bit of bass, so might go for a slightly bigger option. I'm thinking of a power amp along the line, just to help it along, it seems to be a common thing to upgrade, reading some of the forums last night

Be wary of the Naim forum - they seem to be specialists on spending as much money as possible and 'upgrading' as much too!

Go and test the recommended best matching speakers as mentioned here for the Qute and pick the one that sounds best for you. Unless you have a massive room (then you should have probably gone for a bigger system) you'll have more than enough power IMO.

That's not my experience of the naim forum, unless its changed in recent years. Many chaps seem to thrive on an antediluvian nait or some olive kit with a pair of Quad 57s.

    Ha ha!

They do go on about the "Good old days" of Naim before this digital mumbo jumbo. Around the same time Britain ruled Ghana

Indeed - the 'digital' guys are rampant with upgrading everything possible. Definitely not the case with the 'analogue' crowd!

You should listen to KEF R100 or R300 on decent stands. From what I've heard they make the B & W sound very 'shut in'. If you can go up to LS50 even better. I've spent many hours listening to them. Naim have quite a lean forward sound which the KEF's help tame. Stick some nice Chord 'Rumour' cable on too. Try and demo them at a good dealer with your own material.

Oh dear. Cue fifty posts claiming that cables must be bell wire. the cheaper the better. And why my Steinway Lyngdorf Model D system sounds better for being wired with £0.17 worth of stuff from Maplin...

Cheers, Rod. Unfortunately, they've got to go in the Gods due to lack space.

Give PMC a try, I'm using some Fact's with my setup having moved from a set of Twenty22. B&W just do nothing for me but each to their own. Try before you buy.

Quite. What's the point of having a sub woofer, for example, if you're going to gimp it by using an inferior interconnect. Get one of these, an AudioQuest Wild Dog. A snip at a mere £9049: http://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/p...fer-cable-20m/

I bought my unitiqute a couple of years ago and paired it with neat motive 2se. All was good untill I went to the What hifi show held annually in Bristol. My qute is now paired with PMC twenty23's which is perfection to my ears. The 23's are floorstanders but the 22's are nearly the same but in a bookshelf cabinet.

I have a Unitiqute v1 but with the upgrade to 192khz.I'm running it with B+W CM8's floor standers in average size living room.Streaming FLAC files from Nas drive.
Had this a year or two and its absolutely fantastic for the money. So much so that i keep putting off buying a supernait2 to use the Chord Hugo (used in my headphone setup)with as thats supposed to be amazing but have yet to listen. So much to watch out for with HiFi as my system in your room could sound crap so always best to demo if you can.Room acoustics and speaker positioning are as important as the gear itself.

    Cheers,Craig

    Cheers Craig.

Yep, this has had the upgrade to 192. I bought it from just down t'road from you!

I'm going to have to find a Naim seller in Manchester to test some bookshelf speakers, but also whilst I'm dithering which speakers to get, I can be ripping my CD collection to he NAS drive!

    Great stuff Adam!
I'm using DB Poweramp to rip Cd's to Flac from a macbook Pro and have Audivarna for headphone listening.Sounds very technical when you write it down but really it isn't in practice!

Neat Ultimatum xls, they are truly amazing for a small speaker.

But suprised if Naim recommend neat though, they are owned by Focal

Before I bought my Uniti, I had the pleasure of testing a qute, uniti 1 & 2 alongside a superuniti. I decided to pay the extra for a Uniti in the end though I would have loved the SuperUniti.
Nothing to add other than I use mine with some HHB studio monitors and NACA5 cable - sounds fantastic, if I can get it back from my ex-gf...

Well I had a demo yesterday with Focal, KEF and others, but the ones that stood out were, believe it or not, the Bowers & Wilkins 685 S2. They just seemed to have a fraction more bass for my ageing ears.

Now is it Chord or QED speaker wire...

Did you demo any PMC speakers ?

If you are buying book shelf speakers often it's good idea to supplement them with a dedicated Sub hidden away, it will add a lot more depth and weight to your music. You can then make sure the bookshelf speakers are better for the mids and high rather than you preferring the B&W because they have a bit of extra base

This is a good site for sensibly priced, good quality subs

Only proper Demo is where you are actually going to use the thing, you would be amazed how different it will sound
