I went last weekend and parked on the residential roads just before the lanes. Free all day and only takes max of 10 mins to get to the pier.
I know the sea front is expensive and the marina used to be free for 4 hours, how long would it take to walk to the lanes from the marina?
Is there a better option?
(Also are all the best shops to the west of the pier?)
thanks.

Park and ride from the Withdean stadium. Easy, and saves any hassle driving/parking in central Brighton. £4-70 for the bus.
Cheers

I was there last weekend and the traffic driving in was horrendous. Then paid £4.50 per hour to park. I'd find somewhere out of town to park and get the train in. If it hadn't been for the football match I would have parked at Falmer and had a nice little 9 minute train ride in with trains every 15 mins.
Even the buses were getting held up in the traffic, so train is the way to go
It's a 30 min walk... I did it a couple of weeks ago... You can can resident tickets in Kemp town maybe too?
Watch out for that...the asda charges...I don't live there anymore but as far as I know the multi storey next to the casino/bowling/cinema should be ok... The Green Party (ruling council) is in an all out war against the motorist there, the reps who visit friends of mine in their jewellers in the Lanes don't want to actually call there because it costs them so much to park....
No joke I omce parked underneath casino square in Monaco and it was cheaper to park there for the day than the car park under the Brighton council offices ..
Do you mean past the Palace pier going towards the other old (west) pier?
There's nothing much from pier to marina, from palace pier (sorry Brighton Pier) go into East St that's the beginning of the Lanes...and by best shops do you just mean jewellers or other stores?
The Lanes will have the best choice of watch shops, see Ocean Jewellers or Classic Watch Co. for Rolex, plus the others Gold Arts and Classic Jewellery have a few pieces often.
The North Laines across North Street through to Trafalgar St has the funky independent shops and a different vibe...
Bill's is nice in North Rd for lunch but gets very busy... Good luck with the parking I don't miss that part of living there from that aspect...see this news story on the poor sea cadets...

So marina for 4 hours ;(free) nice 30 mins stroll along the front, East street to look at the watches and lunch at Bills....sorted
The London Road car park is another alternative £5 for four hours. A 15 minute walk through the North Laine where all the independent shops will get you to the seafront. This way you can also pass by the Jubillee Library, Theatre and Pavilion gardens. This area is the best part of Brighton IMO. Bill's is nearby.
Churchill Square is a mall where the chain shops are situated. The (South) Laine area is where all the watch shops and antique shops are. East Street is a nice area with restaurants and shops.
The benefit of parking a bit further North from the seafront area is avoiding the congestion getting in/out of the centre of Brighton. Still can be bad though but you will avoid the worse.

London Road carpark is probably your best bet. Or a few mins walk from there is hanover which has no parking restrictions... You might have to drive around for a bit to find a space!
So thanks to you all we had a great day out, we parked in the Vantage point car park in Elder place (north of Brighton) BN1 4GW, £1 an hour and walked to the train station (10mins) to meet a friend.
Then to the lanes, another five mins walk, lots of clothing and collectable nil-naks and then a pub lunch. After into the watch shops and a great antique war weapons shop to browse the guns and swords etc
An ended the day in the New York coffee shop, owned as it turned out by Peter Andre.
so all in all a great day out
thanks chaps

After the fact, but Classic Watch Co. (in the little square with the fountain) mentioned by someone above closed some months back.
Glad you had a good day
..... T'was me who mentioned that....was owned by Martin Kaye who was in London previously, last time I looked at website it was still active ...I lived there for 24 years...but now live in the South West... I mentioned Classic as Ocean for example and some of the others are usually shut on Sundays....
I'm sort of surprised at this...............but maybe not...the rates are crippling in Brighton and the car parking designed to put off visitors...but that particular Dolphin Square has always been the Bermuda Triangle for business.... for some reason nothing lasts there long....
well Ocean has quite a loyal clientele and competition is fierce there so they won't be unhappy......shame though... their prices were competitive with a nice selection

Looked open to me a couple of weeks past when I stuck my head in the window?
i thought the central lanes were a bit crap.. All jeweller shops... The streets running away from central Brighton were much better nice mixture of little shops and cafes etc.
You're right there...,Central Brighton is not great....the lanes is more jewellers than watch shops though there are some.., mixed knowledge on classic watch co then ...open or shut case?
There are a lot more independent cafes there these days amongst the costas and Starbucks apparently
Classic watch moved away from second hand and walk in customers. So they now sell grey imports online. Although last time I spoke to them they were talking of opening the shop the public again, they have not moved or sold, just reduced the shop size and stopped letting people in.
Ah thanks Dom that clears that confusion up...I guess they have to serve out their lease unless someone else takes it on (not likely at moment) that's why they have to trade there and at least goods secured on premises rather than stored at home... Bit odd though unless they have had a robbery (not unheard of there I watched one (or tail end of one from a cafe once..) from another shop..
