Could I 'pull off' a Speedmaster Pro?

I think I'm finally ready to make my first big purchase and the Speedy Pro ticks all the right boxes.

My only concern is that it's 42mm and my wrist is just under 7". Could I handle it? Unfortunately trying one in at an AD isn't possible right now as my local has none in stock.
Obviously, every wrist is different - some flatter than others, etc, so I have included two images to give you an idea of what I'm dealing with.

One picture is of a Seiko 5 (37mm) and the second is an Orient Bambino (40mm).
Do you think 42mm would just be too much for me?
    All opinions welcome, thanks :-)

Looks like a Speedy would be fine.

That Seiko looks tiny on you. Speedmaster will be fine I reckon.

Depends how you feel about it. My wrist is 6.25" and I'm happy wearing Rolex DSSD, Sinn U1 and a Speedy. And the Speedy is the smallest of those watches.

My wrist is 6.75 and square in profile (yes, really!) and I find the full-size Speedy wears too big. A 7" 'normal' wrist will probably be OK. Best bet is to try one, it's the only way to decide.

I too have 7" wrists and thought a Speedmaster Pro would be too big.

I first bought a Speedmaster Reduced, and while it was a lovely watch, I still wanted a Pro.

So I sold the Reduced and bought a Pro. It is a perfect fit, my favourite watch in my humble collection and will never be sold!

So, you will be perfectly fine and I am sure will love it as much as I love mine.

A speedy pro will be fine on your wrist mate. Seriously - you'll not think of it as a big watch at all...

Just looked through my old pics but no wrist shots of my old Speedy.........I have 6.5" flat wrists and it wore fine for me despite being used to 40mm watches. Is your wrist round?

Edit - couldn't see pics first time around. Think you will be fine.

I disagree about the Seiko - it looks just fine on your wrist for the style of watch it is. The objective of wearing a watch is not based around occupy as much space on the wrist as possible.

I agree, however, that a speedmaster will very likely be fine. It has always been a watch that benefits from its size in terms of legibility, yet does not descend into clownish proportions. As you say, your wrist isn't huge, so anything larger will probably be pushing it a bit, but a speedmaster - in no small part due to its dial size and bezel thickness will, I think, wear well.

Also, the "rule" that the lugs of the watch shouldn't overhang your wrist obviously apply in this instance (not actually a rule - but advisable to take it on board so as not to look a right tool).

100% fine. The Speedy doesn't wear too large at all.

It's your eyeballs being used to seeing a (relatively) small watch on your wrist.

Could you carry off a 50mm diver? No, I don't think so as the lugs would overhang - and that's about as cool as having lots of photographs of yourself doing martial arts in your living room.

Could you carry off a Speedmaster? Hell yeah.

You just need your eyes to adapt

I have a 6.5" wrist and I think the speedy pro is fine on me. And I normally refuse to wear any watch larger than 41mm but I think the curved lugs on the speedy pro help it wear smaller.

Based on those images - should be fine.

Maybe travel further afield to try one on?

If you are worried there is the 39.7mm First Omega in space which has the same movement?

The Speedy is really a 40mm watch - the 42mm is only due to the crown/pusher guard ( as evidenced by the FOIS alluded to above which has no guard) and has a lug to lug of 47mm so maybe very similar to your Bambino.

I have a slightly bigger wrist than yours and find them to be a near perfect size for a watch with bezel, also helped by the 20mm strap width

That's interesting. I had thought the 42mm was the outside diameter of the round part of the case.

Thanks a million for all the replies.
The general consensus seems to be that it would fit pretty well, which is great!
My nearest AD that has it in stock is a 2 hour drive but maybe I should just man up, make the trip and try one on - at least then I'd be 100% sure :)
Again, thanks to all for the input.

Aquavit beat me to it, I was also going to point out that the Pro wears like a 40mm watch.

It's the crown guards that make it 42mm, as shown in post #10 in this thread:

A Speedy would definitely be fine for your wrist. My wrist is less than 6.5"(and flat, much like your own) and wears just right, at least IMO.

    Go for it.

The Speedmaster is not a dress watch, it's a sports or a professional watch. So what if it looks bit big, it's a watch designed to do a job. Wearing it on a Nato makes it look a bit softer and lessens the impact if you are worried about it looking big.

The consensus is that the watch will not look big. I think the OP asked a very sensible question. Nobody wants to buy an ill fitting watch.

OP - I had exactly the same dilemma as you. Small wrists (6.5" but quite flat) and thought I would only be able to really wear the Reduced. I tried on the Professional and it fits just fine as others have said. It doesn't wear big at all. Go for it!

The only problem with comparing wrist sizes in inches is that everybody's wrist shape is different, and what fits a 7" flat wrist fine might not fit a 7" round wrist.

Diameter is one thing, but more important probably is lug to lug length which might give 'overhang' and also the thickness which affects how the watch sits, ie whether it stays out or works around to one edge of your wrist or not.

Wrist shape is important, hence it is a good idea to try on first if possible.

Looking at the pic of your wrist, it seems quite flat, and you've got plenty of space there to take up, so I think a Speedmaster Pro would fit you fine.

I have 7 inch wrists (if anything they are flat rather than round) and I found the 42mm Speedy slightly too big for me - the Reduced was a much better size for my wrist. It's all subjective though. Some genuinely believe that they can pull off a 44mm DSSD with smaller wrists than mine and if they are comfortable with that, who am I to argue?

In any event, you need to try one on. Get to a local watch and clock fair, there is sure to be a Speedy Pro you can try on there.

I have a speedy pro on bracelet and was quite happy (6 3/4" wrist) until I bought a PRS18Q at which point I began to ask exactly this question. After a false start with a Hirsch, I put it on an Omega rallye and it now "wears" smaller as in the above photo. I am considering a black nato, probably one of our hosts and if it looks OK, may go for one of Omega's (I know, I must be insane to pay those prices but I like the on on the DSOM).
Go for it, they are great watches.

I might just put it out there and say, no-one can't pull off a speedmaster.

As it has been mentioned before if you think your wrist is too small go for a speedmaster reduced

You know what, this is the saddest most pathetic load of tosh I've read on a forum.
A bunch of grown Men, obsessing over weather their wrists are big enough for a particular watch.
Watches used to be an enthusuasts pursuit, but now it seems it's been taken over by a bunch of big girls blouses who care more what they look like wearing the watch, than they do the watch itself.

Not sure what the term 'pull off' means in this context........but a 47mm watch on a wrist smaller than mine won`t be a good look.

Be like me and accept that you can`t wear big watches.........at 5' 10" I was never tall enough to play basketball; at 11 stone wet through I wasn`t big enough to play rugby league..........we have to accept our physical limitations and unfortunately those of us who are skinny of wrist can`t wear big watches without looking like plonkers.

Big watches make a skinny wrist look even skinnier IMO.
