They are not something I am particularly familiar with but I think Seiko make (or made) some quartz yacht timers.

Hi there, I'm looking for a yachting timer for under £1000, I've been looking for Heuer skippers, but they all seem to push beyond my budget.
Also, does anyone know of any other specialist timers, I know omega make a soccer timer
Thanks

Omega Seamaster Apnea is basically a modified Yacht Timer. You might get one under £1k if you are lucky, but be careful as I have a seen a fake one.
Aquastar Regatta ?
Cheers..

There are quite a few vintage chronographs with yachting timer subdials (like the Heuer Skipper or the Yema above) but if you're looking for a watch with a dedicated timer mechanism then I'd recommend researching the Aquastar, Lemania or Heuer Regate/Regatta models from the 1970's. The Memosail is also another vintage watch with a dedicated function.
You'll find more information on yachting timers than you can handle on Mark Reichardt's excellent site: http://www.regatta-yachttimers.com/
Rich.
Yachting and budget are not words you often see in the same sentence...
On the quartz side, anything with an ETA 251.262 (or 232 if thermo-comprensated) can be pre-set on the chrono to count down to zero when activated (the central minute hand positioned at 50 minutes for timing the 10 minute gun, or 55 minutes for the 5 minute gun). The advantage is that this system also goes straight into timing the race elapsed time as it passes zero.
There are some dedicated quartz movements that do with with sound notifications as well.
Also, there is the Chronosport Chronosail, with a unique Lemania movement in it.
This site is full of them

Don't yacht timers countdown from the 10 minute gun or something as those look very like a chrono watch (the first does seem like it might count down) or is that a different sort of sailing race ?
The YEMA is lovely, and I've not seen the Heuer boxing timer before and looks lovely as well. Unfortunately I'm not a massive fan of the MK2(?) case. But I think I could make an exception for that...
A race is started with a count down.
In the 70s & 80s the countdown was signals at 10 minutes; 5 minutes and start which is why you see those Aquastar and Memosail watches with 10 minute contdown.
Then ISAF changed the rules and races were started with a 6 - 3 - Start sequence which made all those mechanical watches with 10 minute sequence obsolete.
These days it is a 5-4-1-Start sequence so some of the old mechanical watches such as the Aquastar Regate are usable again ...
But I don't know any serious sailor who uses a mechanical watch ...
Omega ref# 176.0010. Google it till I get pics of mine up😊
Aquastar & Heuer made some crackers.

Tissot seastar navigator?
Well under budget. I picked up a nice one from here, vintage tissots are good value.
