Sorry Paul, I've not got any advice to offer.
I just wanted to say how good the watch looked :D
Congratulations
p.s. You could consider a Hirsch Carbon Sport
I just bought a Bulova Astronaut Mark I, (my first hummy!) and I'm trying to choose the appropriate strap.
I'm torn between getting a rhino, something tasteful in black leather with white stitching, or finding an original coffin style bracelet.
Any and all advice or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul that is an absolute fantastic buy and one of my favourite Accutrons.
As for strap it's hard to say. Ideally it would be nice to keep the combination as original as possible and get the metal bracelet. But until then it would be exciting to see what kind of strap suits this watch.
Somehow leather doesn?t suit the futuristic elements ... Rubber perhaps, something very flat like the Hublot strap:
Or a Hirsch "Carbon Tec" Strap from:
http://www.timefactors.com/stuff.htm
Coupled to a deployant buckle.
I disagree with Paul about using the "Carbon Sport" because 'the stitching' gives out a rural impression that doesn?t fit a revolutionary watch such as this.
This link will give many variations on the strap theme:

Costume jewellery. Ouch!!!
I believe black shark would set it off, but no contrast stitching.
Nice looking watch.

No you don't, you disagree with Steve :P :roll:Originally Posted by abraxas
BTW I think the carbon sport looks modern, and the white stitching excellently complements white dial indices/ hands etc.
If he wants to disagree with Paul...let him
He's probably saving any disagreement with you for a rainy day :D

Good point.
Find the original coffin link bracelet. It deserves it.
Paul
What a dilemma!
It really is a most distinctive looking watch and I rather think it deserves a distinctive strap/bracelet. The original coffin link would certainly be a handsome choice.
Kevin
I've just googled tp find out what a coffin link looks like, not bad :)

If you can't find one of them, I think mesh might look good.

Links look like little coffins. Very popular with the Accutron crowd. Also very comfortable have never owned one but have had a couple of chances to try other peoples. They come up on E-bay every once in a while.Originally Posted by Ming Thein

And from tha auction the following:
The Bulova Accutron watches were made famous as being the legend watch worn by Astronauts in the 1960's.
I did not know that. Oddly enough the only reference I can find to Bulova and NASA is that they kept failing the qualification trials ;-)
Kevin
Turns out that's actually not coffin-link bracelet. It's a non-branded bracelet that bears a slight resemblance to the coffin-link.

I wanted to thank you all so much for the comments and thoughts on what would go best with my watch.
This is an amazing forum, I've always loved watches, it's great to see there are so many other people out there who do as well.
Paul
You are very welcome here Paul.
I think it helps that you brought us such a wonderful watch by way of introduction!
Kevin
As I said an aftermarket not original. But the onlt one on US E-bay maybe one of the others has one. I believe one of the gemini astronauts wore an Accutron. I know that the clocks on the LEM and Command Module were Accutrons. I have been trying to keep away from vintage but that Accutron is real nice and is calling me HMMMMMMMMMMMMOriginally Posted by expat

In 1960 NASA asks Bulova to incorporate Accutron technology into its equipment for the space program. The CEO of Bulova at the time was Omar Bradley, 5 Star General, US Army, Retired. During those early years Accutron timing mechanisms were used in 46 US space program missions. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts, the first men on the moon.

So was it a Bulova Accutron that was used as the mission timer on Apollo 11? I remember that Armstrong left his Speedmaster inside and took Aldrins, as the mission timer stopped working and they wanted to have at least one working chronograph inside the lander.

Thanks for you input on the battery, the only downside to vintage accutrons is that they rely on a mercury 1.3 volt cell that's no longer made. A 1.5 silver cell can work because the accutron was built with some degree of voltage regulation. According to my watchmaker 3 in 10 hummys need to be recalibrated to deal with the higher voltage.
This accutron is a calibre 214. They're known as being quite reliable, and have the unique feature of have a flip-up crown on the back of of the watch, next to the battery hatch.
This is first non-mechanical watch I've ever really been interested in, and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
I've decided to get the Hirsch carbon sport while I hunt down a reasonably priced coffin-link bracelet.
Thank you all again for your input, I plan to become a much more regular visitor to this forum.

.
Paul, sorry for hijacking your thread.
Yesterday I took the Hummy Snorkel for re-luming ? so I asked what other colours I could
have and was told (right or wrong) that coloured lume is not tritium but coloured-paint.
Not that I would have wanted anything but green for the Snorkel - which I think has a
fantastic colour co-ordination ? just wanted to know the options.
My watchman reckons that there is no way I could have had a watch
in better condition from that era (1971) which gave me an inner glow.
My comment was: "It?s a pity that one day, ALL Accutrons will just STOP."
To which he replied that he has a contact with spares for the next 30 years.
Whatever, I have been considering using the Snorkel as my main watch
and the lack of lume was frustrating.
---------------
In the shop next door they had an Omega Dynamic Date like the one on the left here (but on it?s original bracelet):
Also they had one of these:
http://www.omegawatches.com/omega/mu_col_1974
http://home.xnet.com/~cmaddox/omega_meg ... _2400.html
I didn?t ask for the price. As the argument with myself went like:
?And what do you want to know the price of a megaquartz for??
When I pick up the Hummy I?ll probably pop next door and ask.
My advice is: Don?t!
Who said that?
