    Cider recommendations

Its summer and as much as I like a pint of Pride its not as refreshing in the summer.

The only Lager type beer I like is the Czech style pils, Budvar etc.

I am not a big fan of the blonde beers,

Recently i have been enjoying a bottle or 2 of Cider.

What Cider recommendations do the Cider drinkers have.

I am talking supermarket stocked stuff, not your esoteric brews

Diamond White Cider in a 2 litre plastic bottle. Enjoy a relaxing Sunday by sitting next to a canal and shouting incoherent abuse at passers by. Happy days!

I like the flavoured ciders ie summer fruits etc, can't beat it ice cold on a sunny day. Problem is it goes down like pop

This is why you should not consume cider in the sun, you have already forgotten the malnourished mutt on a bit of string tied to the railings outside of the offie....

It is very hard to find cider without fizz in mainstream outlets, but Henney's Vintage Still is fairly widespread, but unfortunately a tad sweet for most cider aficionados.
Otherwise, go to Glastonbury and whilst there stock up on Heck's Farmhouse Dry.
If absolutely desperate, buy a dry cider and leave the lid off for a couple of days, giving it a shake every now and then. It will eventually go still.

It has to be Hecks cider for me, I buy it direct from the farm shop though some stores stock it as well.

Aspall's, Stowford Press, Thatchers Old Rascall and Green Goblin, Henney's Vintage, Merrydown Fox, Westons Wyld Wood Organic.

If you want to dabble in the flavoured Old Mout - I was bought some for a present and thought I'd hate them but they're not bad.

Personally I'd steer clear of Somersby Cider (by Carlsberg!) its foul.

M&S Vintage Somerset cider. It's a spot on Medium Dry cider. Delicious!

If you are based in Central London there is a Cider vendor in Borough market. I won't profess to have much knowledge on the subject but it tastes good to me.

I like Aspalls if I'm buying it but it's actually very easy to make it yourself. You just need a demi john, some apple juice and yeast, plus some bottles and a bit of patience.

    Yeah, this stuff is great.

Edit; I used to buy quite a bit of Sainsburys own vintage cider, comes in a big bottle. That was pretty good too.

hi, westons for me, i spend most weekends at a small village near me called Staithes, a couple of years ago the owner of the pub i go in (the cook) had a beer festival type weekend (most weekends) their were a couple of ciders on offer at £1.50 a pint.
anyway, one of them looked like the way it would come out (if you see what i mean), well this little beauty was 10.5 on the richter scale!
5 pints later i was a very happy man!

I enjoy my cider, and of the 'easily available in shops' stuff, this is number 1 for me.
I like Westons stuff in general - their Scrumpy Cloudy Cider is good too. Also like Stowford Press and Aspalls

This weekend I had a few Tesco's Simply Sparkling Apple Ciders, very moorish as its lightly sparkling and not "gassy". £1.39 for 500ml, I will be having more next weekend.

I prefer the Aldi peach and raspberry one, which is surprisingly nice, though it is a tad sweet. Good value ciders though.

As others have said. Westons 8.5 is a fantastic cider ,just be carefull.
I used to know a delivery driver who came up from axminster devon, all his family / friends were farmers and used to dig a pit, fill it with apples and other ingrediants including meat, and it was a proper flat cider in a sqaure 2lt bottle like the sort you get some industrial detergents in. I have no idea its ac content ,but it was very strong and if you left the bottle over a week after opening it would go mouldy.

I'm sure Staithes is familiar to many parents of young children: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Jack%27s_Boat

Interested to hear that Normandy cider is available. I'm a big fan of French cider - even the cheap stuff is lovely - and have often wondered why it isn't available over here.

Although their lager is rotten, Carling's Cider is pretty decent. For something a little different the Strongbow Dark fruit is really tasty. Its not too sweet so you forget your drinking alcohol and the cans /bottles disappear very quickly.

For something cloudy then Addlestones and Haymaker are very good. Haymaker is especially good bit is lethal. 5 of them with a malt to go along with each and I was ready to go home.

hi, morrisons sell "k" cider, 4 large cans for £5.

  43. #43
I've been a cider boy all my life, lager gives me a bad head.
Can hapily drink strongbow down the pub, but much prefer the proper stuff when i can get it in a real ale pub.
For me the best of the bunch from the supermarket is what used to be called westons organic (now called wyld wood), the westons cloudy scrumpy in the big 2l glass bottle is pretty good too.
Savanna dry is a nice fizzy tipple on a hot sunny day

It is conceivable that I may have, by accident, in the sun, consumed rather too much cider yesterday - and as a result am sitting in the office feeling like sh1t.

I love these type of threads - someone asks for a recommendation for whatever it is and gets recommended almost every single brand of whatever it is on the market and even a few brands of something else entirely just for good measure.

Personally I like sweet ciders - not exactly smitten with a particular brand. IMHO the choice is overwhelming nowadays, so best to buy a bottle of 2 of whatever it is that takes your fancy and take a, drink it and see, approach.
