40mm max with SUPREME legibility. As in a half blind pensioner can read it? Suggestio

Was at my Dad's yesterday and he really can't read his watch now. Feel like an horological present is in order. Any recommendations sub £300? Something all dial I guess with white on black (or vis versa), no complications and total legibility. In Dad's case quartz would be fine as well as automatic.

Mondaine isn't a bad shout, thanks! I've got a £50 voucher hanging around somewhere for a stockist too.

Timex Easy Reader. Simple and cheap, and frankly it doesnt look half bad.

I bought this for my father in law for legibility......

........as these (which I wanted to buy) are rare and expensive..

I'd be looking at the Sinn 656 on sc at the minute if I were you.
It's £100 over budget but a whole lot of watch for the cash.

How about a Tisell Pilot, Flieger type a dial in 40mm. Reasonable in price and a pretty decent watch by all accounts.

Will he get on ok setting it?

This is bang on 40mm and pretty clear especially in the dark with the micro gas tubes.

And a great watch they are too - but somehow I don't see dad walking the spaniels in his tweeds sporting that

This springs to mind for me, 38mm, super legibility and in immaculate condition, very easy to wear due to its size and has various options with either leather or bracelet whichever he prefers.

Sorry for my blatant sales plug :-)

Hamilton produce pretty good value pieces and usually have good number visibility

    As example

    What about Seiko's SARG009?

Good price, sturdy movement and good looks.

Edit: And this, because It's on my list, and the perfect "elderly gentleman" watch imho.

Lots of good options mentioned here already, the SARG009 looks just the ticket. My mother, who has similar eyesight problems, has taken a shine to a Sinn 556A after looking at my 856. A bit over budget new but some second hand deals might be close.

Another vote for Mondaine. It was the only watch which appealed to my father who has similar requirements to the OP. The basic quartz no-date station clock style item is available in 35 or 38mm I believe and retails for around £150. Job done.

These are highly legible and a great watch for accuracy too. Cheap to buy.

Wear mine quite a lot on a nice Hirsch Liberty 22mm

Okay - he might not thank you at first... but it's unique and a cool watch.

I also think it is unique and cool - and useful for surreptitiously checking the time in meetings!
I was happy to support Eone, even if I only wear the watch occasionally. It is my intention to pass it on to Mum if her eyesight does deteriorate significantly.

I've heard good things about the smiths, whereas I own the mondaine, and it feels cheap.

The smiths is better specced and looks like much better value for money.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Seafire... I think the hands on that would fit the bill nicely?

    And we have a winner!

Many thanks to all who contributed to the above, some fantastic suggestions. Scratching my head however I remembered that the voucher I had was for more than I thought, and with the jeweller who issued it being a Mondaine stockist (and run by an acquaintance and all round nice guy) it ended up as a no brainer.

Not taken any photos yet, but picked up a lovely 40mm three hander, no date on steel mesh for effectively nothing after he applied a discount and the voucher.

Again thanks to all who chipped in with advice!

    Sounds good.

I hope your dad will have a clear view of that dial for a long time to come :)

Great choice. Always nice to see an outcome to a thread, quite often they're just left hanging.
I do like the Mondaine watch myself, seems to be a favourite of Kevin McCloud too
