F P Journe Octa Sport - New arrival

There have been quite a few discussions on here about the F P Journe Octa Sport, which, on balance, tend to lean towards dislike rather than like. Everyone has their own view of what quality and excellence looks like and this particular watch ticks all the boxes for me.

F P Journe's brief for the creation of this watch was simple, create a very light sporty watch which carries the same Journe DNA as the rest of the collection.

After 4 years in R&D, the result is a case made from aluminium, but not any old aluminium, it is an aluminium alloy used in the aerospace industry, extremely hard but with incredible lightness. Current versions of the watch now have a titanium case as the aluminium alloy was just too expensive to continue with.

Journe then set about recreating his amazing 5 day movement (normally produced in solid gold) by replacing all the gold parts with aluminium ones including the rotor. Journe got around the issue of the aluminium rotor not being heavy enough to rotate by adding titanium studs. The level of R&D that has gone into this watch is amazing.

You could say Journe is solving a problem that doesn't exist but that would be missing the point. He has created this 53g watch because he can and it has not been done before.

I've now had it on my wrist for 2 weeks straight and I am blown away by the comfort of the thing, it is incredible. The silicon rubber strap has been cut to perfect size and the deployant snaps shut reassuringly.

The Octa sport may be a bit 'marmite' in WIS circles but if you ever get chance to put one on your wrist you just may be converted!

It's a day/night indicator. Serves no useful purpose but looks cool as it sweeps from white to red as time passes.

Thanks for the pictures and the fascinating information. You do however have to wonder, with all this agonizing about the weight, why not just drop the rotor altogether and make it a manual wind?

I only like a few FP Journe watches but i admire him for doing what he wants.

Thanks for sharing an interesting piece.

Journe watches are fantastic pieces and this is no exception. The thing with 'marmite' is that although some people hate it- some love it! A bold and definite choice. Great watch, enjoy.

Huge congratulations Tony, a stunning watch you're unikely to see on anyone else's wrist.

Huge fan of FPJ himself and his watches (as you know ;) ). This is marvellously lightweight just for the sake of it and that's to be applauded.

Hope to see it one day!

I read somewhere that he wanted a 5 day automatic movement so that people can take it off on a Sunday night, put it in their watch box, and put it back on their wrist after work on Friday without having to set it!

Thank you, but could a manual wind movement not have a 5 day power reserve?

Not what you'd expect from F.P. Journe.

Sweet. Quite like the style of that one. And no doubting the manufacturing quality there!

I only recently became aware of F P Journe & find him intriguing.
This is certainly an interesting piece, & now yet something else to aspire to. :-(

    Thanks for posting.

    I love this watch, congratulations.

It's full on and full of sporty attitude, like hot hatch - and I mean that in a good way.

Superb! A great mix of smart and casual.

Will you think of purchasing a bracelet to accompany it? Hate to think what the cost would be.

You either buy the bracelet version or the rubber strap version, they have different cases and are not transferable. I don't really like bracelets so my decision was easy!!

Nice watch. Probably, may not buy it as too many subplots on dial and that date. But, still a lovely, quality watch. Love that deployant as well.
