Thread: "Reply with quote" not working?

  1. #1

Question "Reply with quote" not working?

As of today cannot seem to reply with quote for some reason......anyone else had this or got an idea why?

When I tick the reply with quote it doesn't appear at all and if I then create a post reply I'm told it's too short as there is nothing typed in the relevant area?

    Mystified of Surrey!

Nah it's fine for me at the moment but it's been problematic in the past

It's happened to me (on my home MBP running chrome) a few times in thelast couple of days. Oddly, when using the "back page" button to take me back to the thread I was trying to quote-reply to, I then get the textbox loaded with the quote.

Which browsers are people having the problem using?

I'm getting the problem with Chrome, but I've not tried any other yet.

    +1 Chrome, on MBP.

Hasnt happened using my almost obsolete IE on my work PC.

It has been very intermittent for me (working normally 95% of the time).

I can report that it is also happening intermittently for me to. Its across browsers (firefox, chromium), and across OS platforms.

Reply with quote is working, now, but editing posts on SC results in a black editing box.

Intermittent for me. Can't reply on SC and some edits in Watch Talk don't work but this reply does. Get the same issue in Chrome and IE

Seems to especially happen if you're trying a multi quote too..

Not working for me today on Mac with Safari. Has been playing up for a while.

Can edit posts OK though; never been a problem.

Edit: Next post a few mins later and Quote worked fine!

I'm having the same problem yesterday and today with a post in G&D (that I'd previously quoted somebody in). I normally use Firefox, but I also tried IE and Chrome and had the same issue with all of them.

I'm sure there is a problem but it's not consistent: Different subforums, different users (both being quoted and posting), and possibly different browsers.

I was using Pale Moon (a Firefox fork) quite happily and then all of a sudden it started experiencing these intermittent quoting and editing problems. I had changed nothing in Windows (no updates) and nothing in Pale Moon (again, no settings changes or updates).

This isn't very helpful information as it stands so from now on I'll try to record exactly what anomalies I experience.

    It seems to be intermittent.

For example, I was able to quote you here and in the BMW thread (
http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?360978). But I cannot quote post #41 in that thread (and I've tried on 2 days, with 3 different browsers).

I wondered whether it has anything to do with the "smiley" in the title of that post, but I also can't quote post #42, though I can quote post #43. I can't work out a pattern for when I can, or can not, quote.

Same for me, as it now seems to be working fine.

Eddie, it was your post regarding the Range Rover diagnostic/service issues that I couldn't 'reply with quote' to this morning.

I've just been unable to edit a post in SC. If I click on edit post, the editing box opens but is empty.

If I then click Go Advanced, I can edit the title but the box of text is still empty.

Guess I'd have to right click copy the entire message before clicking the edit button, and then paste it all back in again.

    Very odd.

    Using safari on my iMac.

I've run into this as well. I don't know why, but it's intermittent. I've replied to one post with no issues, then tried to reply to another post in the same thread and had the box be blank. At first I thought it might be a mobile quirk, but I've encountered it on both iPhone and desktop.

  31. #31
Had another problem when composing a post for SC today....when I wanted to preview the thread it "disappeared" and I had to copy and paste to get it posted.....Via Firefox today.

I'm sure this is some sort of Javascript-related error. Not that that is very helpful.

    Quoting you here works fine.

Once you edit and save as you’ve described, you can re-edit without issue.
It’s as if the system doesn’t recognise there’s already text to be edited, so only displays an empty field.

Just adding that I'm also using Windows and latest version of Firefox and I'm having all 3 of the problems mentioned above:

Ok, I have recorded some anomalies and here are my results.

First of all I should day that there are what appear to be Javascript issues that only occur with some web browsers. I have not reported on these here.

The only issue I am reporting on here is the blank quote problem: I.e. Where you quote someone's message and the edit box is empty. This problem occurs similarly across all the browsers I have tested with (IE, Edge, Firefox, Pale Moon). Sometimes, when this happens, the edit box is empty if you come back and edit your reply too (but sometimes not).

The following table shows most of the messages (from 2nd February to date) where the edit box was blank when I tried to reply to the message with a quote. I say "most" because I forgot to record the issue in some cases. All other replies that I posted worked ok. I have included the author to whom I was replying, the subforum and the thread title in case this is useful to find common parameters to the issue.

    Notes:
    (1) When replying with the multi-quote option, if the messages being replied to include one from a user whose quoted message would have resulted in a blank edit box then the edit box is always blank, even if the messages from the other users being replied to would not have resulted in a blank edit box.
    (2) In many cases where there was a blank edit box I manually re-created the quote. That's why there is a quote there in many cases even where it was not automatically created as it should have been. This is a hassle, to say the least.

Could it be related to this? Edit box blank due to special characters in post

Or this? CKEditor choking on some special characters

Looking at the list of messages above to which I replied (fourth column), what happens when other people try to reply to them with quote? Are they able to see the quoted message in the edit box or is it blank, as with me? There's no need to actually reply; just licking the Quote icon and seeing what is in the edit box will be enough.

^^^ YES! Special characters or character set issues are at least part of the problem.

I noticed that Passenger is posting from Spain and uses an unusual apostrophe character in the three messages of his in the table above.

As a test, I copied his phrase "I can't" (but with his apostrophe character) into my message above in the "possible special character test" section. And lo and behold, when I try to reply to my message above with quote, the edit box is blank.

So special characters or character set issues definitely are part of this problem but might not be the only cause (not the only cause because other messages which do not appear to have any special characters are still affected).

What happens if other people click 'Reply With Quote' on my message above? Is the edit box blank for them or is my message filled in?
