    How the Swatch group rank their watch companies

    I'm not going to comment on the rankings, but one or two surprised me (lifted from the Swatch website);

    Prestige and luxury range;

    Breguet
    Harry Winston
    Blancpain
    Glashütte Original
    Jaquet Droz
    Léon Hatot
    Omega

    High range;

    Longines
    Rado
    Union Glashütte

    Middle range;

    Tissot
    Balmain
    Certina
    Mido
    Hamilton
    Calvin Klein watches

    Basic range;

    Swatch
    Flik Flak

    They really regard Longines as above Rado? That stands out for me

    That's interesting. I never knew that Swatch owned so many brands.

    No, they view them on the same tier. The order within the tiers listed above doesn't note any preference.

    The picture below says it better than my words could.

    Again, never heard of them. Although based on this comment, it doesn't surprise me that it looks like their website was last updated in about 1995.

    I hate what they did to some of the brands, like Union and Longines. Union for a while had decently finished but undecorated GO movements, and some very nice LEs like the Julius Bergter. Now they are pretty bleh. And Longines for me was always, together with Rolex, Zenith and JLC, what came just after the Big Three. Not to mention Hamilton, when I started collecting (OK, I'm an old fart) we used to call them the American Patek. Although I always preferred Elgin (free-sprung balance!).

    And Omega in the same league as GO and Breguet?

    I call it Hayek-ing....

    It is rather shallow, I had a Tissot Visodate which shared the movement with my Longines HC with the modifications for the day and the resultant calibre number. Nevertheless its equal. The Tissot was just as nicely made. For its intended purposes. Though I would agree with the luxury listing. Even given the white bread.

    Say it enough times and it becomes true :). Also the price is the main decider. When the Globemaster on a bracelet becomes more expensive than a standard DJ, the transformation will be complete. It won't be long now!

    A brand name with massive heritage and some of the bird watches are remarkable timepieces (albeit virtually unwearable!).

    I have a soft spot for them as the watch my parents bought me for my 21st is a JD, albeit in a more esoteric incarnation.

    I didn't realise they owned Glashutte Orginal or Union Glashutte. Bit naive of me to think that just because they were German watch companies that they would be independent.

    The history of Omega is far more complex than that though. They didn't get gobbled-up by Swatch, like other brands. It's probably closer to think of it as them becoming Swatch group.

    Yep. One of the big constituents of Swatch (SSIH) had Omega-Tissot at its core. SSIH started the asset-stripping process when facing insolvency in 1979 and the creditors (this being Switzerland, the banks) eventually assumed control a couple of years later after the equity collapsed. The merger with ASUAG was engineered by a management consultant, who then took it private in 1985 after inventing the Swatch. Fast-forward to 1998 and the company named itself after the early 1980s saviour - the Swatch.

    Interesting, I reckon there's only a handful of watches I'd be willing to buy from the whole group... And a few I couldn't afford even if I wanted.

    Omega and Breguet on the same tier is pretty crazy and Tissot, Mido on the same tier as CK....

    Flik Flak and Swatch below CK? Can't take that seriously.
