watch related only
So what is it and what does it do?
Cheers,
Neil.
Yes. But with a lot more cash / incentives at stake, and less potential jail time (probably).
Accounts with high numbers of Followers (and, more importantly, Followers who Like / Comment), are likely to be extremely attractive to certain brands. It even happens in the watch world; the largest Instagram account by Followers, @watchanish, is hugely influential, and (one imagines) profitable. As for @Hodinkee et al, you can be sure that their IG Follower numbers don't hurt their advertising clout. Or, perhaps even their Klout (which was (is?) a 'site that actively rewards social media influencers).
@kidsteruk
Resisting the urge to stray away from posting just watches, but doing OK so far.
I just can't afford most of the ones I take pictures of!!

Just watches. Almost all my own.
no. it’s not about ad revenue. it’s a way of sharing images of product or services outside of ‘normal’ media channels which reinforces the brand and gets you in front of people. in some ways it’s one big advertisement but the format is controlled to a square image. the nice thing about it is the ‘advertising’ is not so in your face as people see it as an eye candy stream of nice visual content and would un-follow if was just ads.
increasingly big brands are actually shooting and thinking a lot about their instagram content. either employing instagram photographers or professionals (stylists/photographers etc) to generate content that is specific to instragram. i have only recently started using it but i see it as a marketing tool where i name drop by associating with the products i shoot interspersed with a bit of moody landscape ‘art’ to show i’m visually aware and creative. the truth is most of that content is shot professionally and not on a phone (some is) it’s also a good way of showing imagery that would not fit in with a website or brand guidelines but is still interesting.
nobody wants to read a blog about a professional photographer, instagram has replaced that as they just want the eye candy that appears on their phone.
Or it's just a nice place to watch pics of pretty watches... If you don't take it to seriously and avoid following the big brands. Kind of up to you.
It's different things to differnt people.
If you have hobby or pastime there will be others on IG who share photos of similar and will engage with you, comment and knowledge share.
If you have family spread around the world you can use it to share photos and keep up to date with what's going on.
If you are a teenager you can set up user groups and chat for hours in teen text about nothing, or send photos of homework to school friends to make sure you got it right.
One thing to keep in mind is that IG is an app. You can view it via PC but you won't have all the interface that the app has.
It's incredible that just a few years ago, you needed a smidge of software know how to take a pic, upload it to photobucket or whatever and then post it on a forum. Now it is just point and shoot, copy + paste. I love that instagram has opened up communication between so many disparate groups of people.
They definitely invade your privacy though. I was discussing a specific charity on whatsapp with some mates and the next time I log on to instgram and since then, I keep getting adverts from this charity. No biggie really given fb, IG and whatsapp are all free to use platforms. But just be aware, everything is being read by some clever computer somewhere.
I'm @cptslow_swe. Fairly new account but I have a few pics on there.
@stuartgrussell - apologies for any cheesy snaps of my kids!

I've only had one new follower.. i must try harder!
That reminds me, I added you to #teamwatchnerd, but wasn't sure how to describe you...
A friend of mine from other forums (and their g2Gs) with a fantastic collection of vintage Rados has started posting on instagram: @scottjcornwell
I only use instagram for instrument/gig related pics. I wouldn't be posting pictures of my Rolex on there as it would be considered gauche in my industry. Happy to share if anyone is interested.
