Thread: "Affordables" that put a spring in your step?

  1. #101
"If you didn't or weren't able to wear your prized possession, which might be your daily wearer, what would you be happy to have as an alternative, something that would put that spring in your step?”

    This.

My Broadarrow PRS-4. Worn almost 24/7, now on its second lithium battery (i.e. going on a decade). My pilot watch, practicality incarnate and with the secret knowledge that only a very small number exist.
If not that one, very occasionally my old Edox Delfin, my very first watch I bought as a teenager with money earned on a summer job. Steel, waterproof, handwound, indestructible, only serviced once in 40 years and still runs accurate; it winds smooth as butter. If the lume still worked I'd probably wear it a lot. My ultimate backup that always works. And it always make me think of the small watch store in Switzerland (Thun) where I bought it from an elderly gentleman whom I asked for an indestructible watch, and my mother's shocked face when I returned to our rented holiday home, filled the sink, plunged in the Delfin and let it sit there for a while to see if it was indeed waterproof (it was). :-)

Very nearly pulled the trigger on one of these think they've every right to become a classic . Good choice

I still cannot believe the price of non El Primero vintage Zeniths. These are top draw watches we are talking about often in the low hundreds . Though your beauty is knocking above the 1k mark currently. Isn't that a GF ladder bracelet as well ? Beautiful piece and well worth building up a collection I reckon.

Since my Rolex Sub came back stickered up from RSC, I have been reluctant to wear it. My daily wear is split between two watches, the Seiko SKX 007 that doesn't do it for the OP, and the elegant SARB065, with its rather wonderful dial. I think around £1000 is a funny price point, expensive, but not what you really want. The SARB065 is £330 including shipping and import tax, I don't thing there is a better watch under £500, and precious little better under a grand.

I used to wear an orange monster as my daily beater but since I got an apple watch it's not left my wrist. I find that with a change of straps it can go from gym fitness tracking, to daily wear to smart casual / business. Of course more formal occasions would require a nice automatic.
Obviously it's not perfect (needs charging every night, limited number of very unimaginative faces, etc.) but it works well as a watch, chrono, world time, fitness tracker and alert notifier that wearing something non smart now feels slightly odd.
A spring in my step? certainly.

Just received this charming vintage hand-wind from the Bay.
I love it! From the 1960's I believe and in NOS condition.

I've since committed WIS heresy and moved back to quartz.

I used to wear my Rolex Sub as a daily, however it's away at St James currently. I dug my old Christopher Ward C4 out of the box and popped it on the bracelet that I bought in one of the famous CW sales for about £10. New battery in the watch, bracelet sized up, and bingo, new daily watch.

Quartz accuracy, alarm, date, chrono to time the cooking and with the sapphire crystal catching the sun, it looks really good.

All for about £125 new when I got mine!

How about a Nomos Club? Or a 50s/60s dress watch in steel (Omega, Longines etc.)

My Seiko mod always brought a smile to my face, especially underwater where it looked especially stunning

Nowadays, my SBBN035 achieves a similar effect

If you have any friends in the US that could post you on a parcel, I can recommend the Mako USA edition.
Sapphire crystal, SELs, nicer bezel action. Here's mine:

Edit: Sorry OP, I'd missed your post where you discounted Orient.

A little vintage like this Benrus... the joy of the patina on the lume far outweighs the cost associated with it!

I think a CWC G10 is hard to beat for the money.

If you're looking at a bit more, I love my Zelos Abyss

The blue one's sold out, but there are other colours - http://zeloswatches.com/collections/abyssbronze. I've got a brown one too as I like the design so much.

Some of the affordables posted here are getting up into the thousands, so I don't really know what they're doing there. But one watch that does slip a dogturd into my pooper scooper is the Orient Mako, which is available for the price of a round of drinks in a London pub.

...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

Took this watch in a trade and being honest I was not expecting much, I had given up on no date watches and although I have always liked the look never thought it was for me

Crazy as it is now one of my absolute favourites
