Need help deciding between a couple of watches

Quite torn between these two pieces. A French dealer/friend is selling a couple of watches, one is the Eterna Tangaroa (£700) and the other is the Tudor Style (£1100). My primary concerns are whether Eterna has taken a dive in quality since the Chinese takeover, and whether it is worth it to get a Tudor at all or whether it's better to save up and get a used Rolex for circa £2500 later on.

Any opinions or alternatives are welcome.

The Tudor would be my choice, will probably retain most if not all its £1100.The Eterna does look a nice watch, but it won't return ( If you sell ) what you paid........imo

It would be useful to know what watches you currently have to perhaps see whether any of these can fill voids in the collection

I'm a huge fan of the Eterna it's very smart. I'm not a fan of an all silver watch..

If feasible, I'd hold out for the big purchase in the Rolex

  12. #12
Of the 2, the Eterna, but I would expect more depreciation.

I like Tudors, but not this one. I do like that Eterna though.

The Tudor gets my vote, in fact I've been studying the Style just this weekend in a 38mm case size.
I never came across it at £ 1100 . Where are you seeing them prices ?

As much as I hate to say it, I suggest you save up and buy a Rolex later on.

Which used Rolex model do you have in mind for £2500.
The Oyster Perpetual models perhaps ?

Just the grey markets seem to be discounted, so I do somewhat question whether the brand has depreciated since the takeover.

I've only got a few watches: Aquaracer Calibre 5, Longines Heritage Conquest and Omega De Ville Prestige.

French dealer, who is a friend of a friend. The actual prices are about EUR 900 and EUR 1400. I don't know the name of the shop, but the guy is definitely legit.

Yeah, was thinking a Oyster Perpetual.

Need help deciding between a couple of watches

Which do you prefer between the Tudor and the Rolex and why? Feels like "I want the Rolex and cant afford it so I am going for second best" ? That never works in my opinion. Go for what you really want, even if if means waiting/saving longer.

The Tudor is a better bet, especially when you want to move it on later.
However I prefer the classic look of the Eterna on a nice simple leather strap

I like them both, I see your dilemma.

For that sort of money could you buy a Rolex Air-King?

I'd go with the Tudor. It will hold its money better and IMO it looks better.

Haha, didn't mean it like that. It's a guy I know from Forum A Montres, a french watch forum. I believe he sources his watches in the grey market, at least based on the prices he's offering.

Can't seem to find a half-decent condition Air King for anything under £1500. Anywhere you recommend besides Chrono24 and eBay?

Of the two I would prefer the Tudor, although If you are willing to pay that much for it, I would look for a nice vintage rolex around that price range (maybe a couple of hundred more)

Can't find any decent condition Rolex's for circa £1400. Anywhere else to look besides Chron24 and eBay?

+1 looks way better. But as usual people are hinting at investment value. And Tudor better for that. But for Eterna much nicer looking.

I think 1400GBP may just be a little to low to get into the Oyster Perpetual range

Yeah, didn't think so either. RamiR suggested I might be able to get in the used Rolex range with a couple hundred more, but that's looking unlikely.

Apologies I just saw your messages.. Actually I have seen a couple of these on sc for around 1400 recently, so it is possible to find one within that range.. Depends if you are into "vintage" watches though

Both good looking watches. I would think the Tudor is better quality but if you are already thinking of saving for a Rolex thats what I would do.

Have patience and the Aladdin's cave will open. All good things come to those who wait. And it is not just watches, there are fantastic deals on cars, shoes, you name it.

Why not look for a vintage Rolex oyster . You'll have to look hard but you may find a vintage date-just for around £1200-£1500 . If you want to upgrade that later you can flip it and get your money back . I love tudor but that model doesn't do anything for me . Have a look at longines for a nice dress watch , they are amazing value for money especially the heritage range and you can get a lovely piece for Around £600-£700 , definitely better than the eterna

I've got a Longines Heritage Conquest. Agreed, beautiful watch and I wear it all the time. I think I'll save the money for a vintage Datejust, thanks!
