My thoughts are, what are you wanting to hear people say?
I'm guessing you want folk to say how nice the watches are, which of course they are, is this a cry for affirmation on your choices?

Sorry I have a horrid cold and my inner monologue appears to keep escaping.

I will not 'pxss on your fire', you like the watches, you will have paid a lot of money for them. End of.

    Thoughts

The Rolex is out of proportion to the bracelet, the fat hands and dot markers give it a Fisher-Price 'my first watch' look about them.
The Zenith has a legendary movement, but the dial, or rather the sub-dials with overlapped sections are just a mess and made useless for timing

Love the Zenith ! Is it the 38mm?

Apologies foe being a miserable b*****d, but I don't like the Explorer.
I've never seen their attraction, but different strokes for different folks, as they say.

I do like the Zenith though.

  8. #8
Really lovely pair of watches. Would love that exact Zenith one day myself. I would also like the Rolex too!!

There are some real silver tongued charmers on this place......... No doubt if you look back over their posts at some point they will have asked similar, but because they are such "old hands" at this posts like yours are not to their liking, but rather than keep quiet they have to pipe up!!

As I said great watches and enjoy :-)

I love the Zenith 1969, the smaller case is - to my eyes at least - "just right". I've been lusting after them on Zeniths website for a few months now. Sadly we rarely seem to see them on SC!

Love the Zenith. You've got the 42 mm case though and I prefer the smaller one. Really nice well balanced pair. I often think about a beauty and beast combo.... Thanks for posting

Nice watches - not quite to my taste but then we are all different thank goodness

Both are a bit busy - have you not considered alternating with a more simple style?

    Just a thought

Well, yes, I'd assume so. Apparently you're not the only one here with a bad case of the grumps.

Nice pair, for me a white explorer is what I would like. The Zenith is very lovely, and has been mentioned the chrono for me is a useless but essential addition, but two very different watches, result.

I agree. Nice pair of watches, this wouldn't be a watch forum without watch pictures asking for others' opinions!

Did you read the original post?

The OP asked for thoughts, not please give me your opinion of these two watches as long you can reassure me that I have two fabulous watches and I have superb taste.

Can understand the comments on the Zenith dials but i still think it's a stunner. I wouldn't chuck the Rolex out of the box either.

i like both of those. i hadnt noticed the subdials on the Zenith being awkward to read due to the overlap but it is so good looking i would forgive it.

i owneed an explorer like that but needed to trade it to pay for a DSSD. it is one of the few watches i have ever traded/sold and it is the only one i would love to have again at some point in the future, great looking watch.

I have tried to like the Explorer II but it does have a sort of toy watch look to it. As for the Zenith, it's hard to see the point of a chronograph when you can't see elapsed minutes for about a quarter of the elapsed time dial.

    Original?
Anything but, both watches are homages to the 60's - 70's originals.

The first Explorer II model, 1655, was launched in 1971 and the Zenith El Primero was launched in 1969. For a pedant, you are surprisingly inaccurate with your statements.

Original as in unusual. The orange hand and the tricolour overlapping dials are hardly seen everywhere.

This has to be one of the most disappointing - read, unnecessarily aggressive - threads I've read in recent times. Is there something in the cold, North winds this weekend messing with some people's heads (and common decency)?

My favourite El Primero, stunning watch. From what I've seen most people seem to prefer the white dial version of your Rolex. Well done on choosing the black, I think it's the best looking one too.

I also like the zenith- I think it's stunning and is a bit different from the other obvious contenders. And the movement is one of the best, love the smooth sweeping hands.

Personally I like the smaller sized explorer ii but see the appeal of the newer version. Perhaps adding a dressy watch would complete a very nice trio?

Both are cracking choices as dailies in my opinion, OP. Until a quick google about your Zenith I didn't realise they were available in 38mm and I have to say I'm tempted.

Love that Zenith. And I hate overlapping elements on a dial :-). This is the only exception I have, no numbers cut in half. Simply stunning. Enjoy!

They are both great watches. Nothing to really find fault with. I do prefer the Zenith in 42 mm but that's a personal preference. Two lovely daily wearers. Have been thinking of trying my Exp on a strap. May be one of these days.

BTW, not a crime not to like a watch or a post or hold back an opinion when invited just because is not exactly complimentary. It is not about backslapping and bro'hood but honest exchange of opinions. For the rest there is always Mumsnet.

Did you read my post, I gave my thoughts which is the same as my opinion, the OP is new here, be gentle with him, it seems to be a bit of a sport here to give newbies a hard time, this is a watch forum, he shared a pic of his watches, it's not very welcoming to be negative, it's just rude.

Thoughts is hardly a great title for a thread, however when the OP asks for such, like you I imagined that we weren't all supposed to start looking for the Vaseline.
A better thread title might have been ''hey tell me how great my watch choices are''.

There are seriously grumpy sods posting on here at times so ignore the garbage.

Both excellent watches but I actually prefer the old 40mm Explorer with the red gmt hand to the new one.

Personally, I wouldn't fault the OP. IMO, a perfectly legit post with two nice watches.
My slight issue is with people who feel that only positive views/comments are legitimate.
