    Poor sad watch

Spotted via a Telegraph banner ad, cheer up little watch:

    http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/...61010511570_-1

I think it's the placement of the date windows that does it (movement tiny I suspect).

Obviously based on the late 40s/early 50s moon phase watches (triple date). They could have made the day and date windows a little bigger - and the moon phase.

Dreadful advertising - wait until the hands cover the windows then take the promo photos.

    Nice price though.

Good English name on the dial should make it a hit with tourists.

I assumed it was a reference to Laurens Hammond of Chicago, inventor of the Hammond organ, who started out as a clockmaker.

Nothing so interesting - Hammond & Co is one of Debenhams's "designer" brands.

They didn't cover up the windows did they? they took the picture at 1:50 like every other watch advert since the dawn of time.

Same difference, but I think 10:10 is more common.

    Also true.
Ironic that they also do this on digital clocks and watches. Bearing in mind that the idea of 10:10 was to create the illusion of a happy face.

Well the 10:10 usually allows for all the other facets of the watch to be visible. The date should be set to 28, apparently... most paint shown, you know?

Quite awful actually. Another small movement in a large case I reckon.

Unless German - then always set to 25.

Well more fool them if tradition obscures two of three functions of the watch. If I take a wrist shot of one of my watches I wait until a time when you can see everything on the dial.

Why do the Germans have to do everything differently?

But in all earnestness, why 25?

    That's the one

    Editor's notes
Patrick Grant's exclusive Hammond & Co. collection for Debenhams brings classic British tailoring to the modern man's wardrobe. From knitwear essentials to premium quality suits, his designs cater to quintessential style connoisseurs by combining luxury fabrics with contemporary colour palettes. Whether smart or casual, they offer traditional sophistication with distinct character.

Although maybe America tourists from Chicago might make the same mistake and buy one on the back of it.As others have said,a nice little watch at a decent enough price, especially if the 100m rating is accurate.

If they could have set the hands to 3.42, perhaps it would have looked like a sad watch with a moustache. The moon kind of looks like its tongue, which adds to the unfortunate effect! I wonder if the designers noticed? Once you see it, it's impossible not to see.

I honestly don't know! Have a search images for Lange or Glashutte big dates or check the website; all photos from the manufacture are set to 25. Always!

Hammond & Co Ltd, established 1776.. How does that work? Does someone trawl through old company registers and buy lapsed names or something to have that sense of old worldliness?
