    WATCHES 4 NEPAL

last year i hoovered up a freebie from sales corner, it was one of those nice little military style citizen day date eco drives on a green canvas strap that they sell in argos for fifty quid. when i went to nepal recently i took it with me with the purpose of giving it away to someone there who would need/ appreciate it more than me. i ended up giving it to pallay, pallay works about 12 hours a day as a gatekeeper/ handyman and he earns around 6000 nepali rupees a month, which is considered a very good wage for the average nepali. the current exchange rate is about 150 NRS to the pound , my appalling maths calculated that he earns around £1.66 / day and he is one of the hardest working people i know... needless to say, he was very happy with his new watch.

yesterday i saw another freebie on sales corner and snagged that too. i told the guy offering it ( mycroft - see thread here http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...03#post3964903) that if he gave it to me i would take it to nepal next time i went ( which i think will be around the end of this year ) and give it to someone there, who otherwise would never have the opportunity of owning something like that. mycroft said he liked the idea, so he will the send the watch to me.

this morning i thought i would open up this initiative to everyone on tz. if you have a watch lying unloved and unused at the back of the draw/ drawer / whatever you call the damn thing, then send it to me in the next few months and i guarantee i will take it and give it to someone in nepal who will really appreciate it. doesnt matter what watch it is, but there are two stipulations - it must be working , and it must be in fairly nice condition. ( a few scratches and dings are fine, but i dont want to give something to someone that is totally muntered - i dont see the point).

if you would like to send something to give to someone in nepal then please pm me. it would also be nice to post pictures on this thread so people can see what other people are sending. as i said, i am not planning on going again until the end of the year so there is plenty of time. this could be like blue peter all over again.

    all the best

Just a question there Davo, how do they get on for batteries - the button type that quartz watches take? Easy to come by or not? Or to put it another way, should folks sending quartz watches perhaps add a spare battery or two?

This sounds like a cracking home for the watch I bought when the "buy the best bargain you can for £50 or less" thread was on (or whatever it was called). It came in well, well under budget if I'm honest but your friends in Nepal will be very welcome to it and it's not a bad looking thing, especially after the hours of vigorous cape codding I gave it. I've just dug it out of a cupboard after a year or so and it's still working perfectly. Will send you a pm.

Is there any particular watch type/style which you would consider most suitable?

I have a new watch that came with a magazine sub which you're welcome to. Also have an old Swatch Irony - but will need to get a battery first to make sure it still works.

Will PM you for address etc.

Also, just an idea - would be great to see the watches with their new owners and the stories that go with them. Might be a bit of hassle for you though so no pressure. Like I said, just an idea.

    Cheers

Had nothing kicking around but in order to help out Grand Master Dave just ordered a few of these for him:

Paltry £17 if anyone else wants to kick in for a good cause, 10 year battery life so perfect for the job I reckon

    AMAZON

Another idea - Vostok Komandirskie watches from Meranom or various Ebay sellers are around 25 quid each, so if anyone is planning to order something for themself, why not add a Komandirskie to the order for Davo's project.

Great initiative, and I have a nice little Seiko 5 Sports which doesn't get out much these days, if you're still accepting donations.

Please let me know where to send it.

Received a nice seiko in the post today from Mike ( from York I guess, according to the postcode! )
Sorry, i don't know your username on here Mike, but its a very nice watch! thank you
(I only opened the package because it was addressed to me and not watches4nepal)

I still haven't opened anything else, will get round to it someday and post the pictures on here.

I'm guessing I have around 20-30 timepieces here so far for free distribution in Nepal - I was only expecting two or three.

If I end up in chokey for smuggling you know the reason why!

Thanks for the great response TZ.

Glad it got there safe Dave. I didn't want to write 'WATCH' on it in case there was a light-fingered postie somewhere along the route. I should have written 'PILE CREAM' on it to make sure it got there safe :)
