Thread: The two watch collection

  1. #1

    The two watch collection

Hodinkee playing our favourite game, first in a series apparently. Although I'm not sure we ever had a 2-watch thread? Been plenty of 'one watch' and 3-watch threads that I recall though.

    https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/th...ck-tough-solar

Not sure I could ever cull to 2, and if I did it wouldn't include my G-shock. It might be my Santos for smart and a diver for casual, but maybe a dive-rated chrono would be more versatile as the second one

    Easy!

Although the SD would be a 2004 Comex and the SPORK would be a GMT mod.

If I had any sense, I'd sell all the rest, keep just these two (I wear them the most anyway), and use the money from the sales to take a nice vacation.

This is what I am thinking about...from 3 at the moment.

    JLC will stay

Other two are blue Pelagos and Exp 39mm, these should leave to make a room for: 116610LN or LV or 114060 or 116600 (hard to choose).

Love these heuer chronos. If i could find one for sensible money id snap one up. Got offered one a couple of years ago whilst between jobs and skint for such a good price. Love them.

I'm not a million miles away from two - ditch a couple of beaters, sell my SDc and I'd have the two that mean the most to me personally and will cover my needs:

I was hoping that someone would post a pair of identical Subs, one to be babied, one to be beaten

These two for me, the BLNR I already have but I've always put off buying the Monaco, even though I admire it so. For me though, they cover all the bases, GMT, Chrono, round, square, bracelet, leather, maybe too much blue going on, but blue goes with everything! Doesn't it...

Tough choice, but I'd have to go with one diver ('66 5513) and one chrono (73663)

Done some serious flipping in the last year, more about a voyage of discovery rather than anything else. Did I want a few choice cuts or a much larger collection of a mixed bag of different styles and brands. Now back down to two watches and I think that is how it will stay for some time. Collected the Daytona this morning from Haywood Milton. Remember the article that he wrote last September, well this is the very watch...

I would probably settle on these two, both 1978 and yes, they are different (just) 39_26_Pro_zpsif9g2dje.jpg.html][/URL]

This is not easy at all but here are my two.....I think I've got all bases covered ;-)

The two watches on the the other hand are a lot harder for me to pick but here goes.......

No Anonimo in this pick, which is surprising to me as they are the 'brand' I wear most regularly!!!!

Similar to mine - Rolex 14060 and Heuer Autavia, although close run thing with the EZM1

As a matter of interest, what is the strap on the 14060?

It's generic Chinese tire pattern strap I got off Ebay from a seller in Hong Kong about ten years ago. I had a Chopard Mille Miglia at the time and had gone looking for a generic tire strap that would look similar to the Chopard OEM strap, and was lucky enough to stumble on that one one night. It was quite nearly identical to the Chopard. I've had lots of people ask about it through the years, but I've never been able to find that seller again.

I wouldn't want to do it but Incould if I had to.
Would be Rolex DSSD and Patek 5980r. Doesn't cover all needs but would do.

I'm about to go to 2 and not flip any more, just think long and hard about what keepers I'm going to add to the 2. The 2 that I will start with are a Speedy Pro and a heavily customised Dornbluth 99.1 that's been nearly 3 years in the waiting and is due in the next week.

Do they have to be watches I already own?

I still don't think I could do it.

I don't see me ever getting to the stage of a couple, however, if I was to pick two true keepers from my collection, they would be:

    My favourite hummer (Certina Chronolympic).

It just feels so right on the wrist, has a vintage feel, loads of character.

    Explorer II 42mm

This is my only expensive watch, and one I coveted since seeing the first renderings. I was lucky enough to be in a position to buy one, from a UK AD, as soon as they hit the UK shores.

This has been an interesting experiment as I could, based on my thoughts today, probably move to just the one watch... And that watch would be the Certina.

But where would the fun be in that? I like trying and seeking out new watches.

  26. #26
Probably keep these two (but may change my mind tomorrow).

This was my intention on starting the thread, that or swapping something (or a few) you have for a similar price watch, otherwise it would just become another fantasy watch thread.

One light dial, one dark dial, both from 1971. The Seiko for the rougher half of the time.

Surprisingly, I'm going to comment on the Speedy first: that dial looks to be a very clear one to read, where too many chronographs are fussy and illegible. I like it!

As for the Floating Dial Daytona, to save others from having to click, what makes it special are small details. Most will be able to see that the word "COSMOGRAPH" "floats" separate from the words above it when it is drawn to their attention, but how many would quickly have spotted the inverted "6" in the hour totaliser (bottom sub-dial), the early "200 unit" bezel and the small, rounded font of the sub-dial numbers? One to enjoy in private, rather than expect people to stop you in the street and appreciate!

It would be this for smart type stuff (with loads of different strap options)

And the DSSD for everything else.

Then i would just not have to wear a watch for work, or mountain biking, or running or working on my car.

Surprisingly easy. Casio amw 320 c X2. Aka Casio "Arnie". Black dial Rolex 24 hr red/blue bezel on nd limit rubber for days with a y in. Champagne dial PO bezel on a 22mm oyster bracelet for days with an a in. The real deal TWINS. Both vintage 89 assymetric pushers left and right. Sixty quid the pair. Why waste your hard earned on the Royal and Ancient, The IOC, Lewis Hamilton et al. OK so Casio Japan bunged Arnie and a whole host of celebs in the early 90's to expose the brand but I am minded to overlook that given the immense bargain prices these watches were acquired for and lets face it...diving is really dangerous 😊

My plan was to reduce down to these two this year. My wife’s face told a different story when I mentioned it, so my end game is four.

    Matte 16800

    Last of the Tritium 16710’s
