Thread: Mythbusters

    Mythbusters

Apparently, benevolent mentoring of newbies denotes a healthy forum.

All time-served members are therefore urged to occasionally share a selection of their watch watching experiences for the encouragement and benefit of all.

I suggest we use this opportunity to debunk some common misconceptions about, err…watches and watch forums.

    I’ll kick off:

    Q: Does Accuracy Matter?
A: Despite what many vintage owners may contest – yes of course it does. It is a time keeping instrument.

    All donations gratefully received

    Q. Is it always necessary to get box and papers with a watch.

    A. No. It is nice to have all the bits and bobs, but you cannot wear them and they do not authenticate or guarantee your watch. It is more important to focus on the condition of the watch.

Q: Is it true Grand Seiko Quartz watches only require servicing every 50 years?
    A: No

Q: But what about the sealed cabin!
A: All watches have a sealed cabin. It is often referred to as the "case"

The 50 year service figure comes from Seiko itself. . And the reference to the sealed modules is about the modules inside the waterproof case. When the case is opened to change the battery, the other parts remain sealed and impervious to water or dust.
Whether fifty years is a valid figure we can't.....yet....know. But it is not a bad idea to read the Seiko literature before showing your lack of knowledge.

Q: I'd like to start a watch collection but I can't afford to lose money on the watches I purchase. I fancy buying a [INSERT MODEL HERE] but will it appreciate in value within the next 10 years and become a future classic?
A: Absolutely - 50 years from now they'll be selling for silly money.

Q: will some rare and vintage watches still be desirable if they are not rare or vintage

A: No. They are desirable because they are rare and vintage.
Rare-vintage ------> Desirable. Get it or need to simplify?

Q: is it necessary to wear cheap and dirty watches when going to cheap and dirty places

A: No. Don't go to cheap and dirty places

Q: Does everyone need a Seiko Monster or an SKX 007 in their collection?

    A: No. No explanation needed

Q: Do watches speak or say Hi or be bad boys or have trigger pulled on?

A: No. Not on TZ. That should be reserved for when interacting with muppets on other fora. Watches are inanimate objects with no gender.

Q: can watches be enjoyed in bad health

    A: No

Q: Can watch strap related posts be made in WT?

A: Absolutely. No one looks at the straps sub forum. Atleast not anyone with a life.

All contributions to be sent to Raj's strap fund

Some other misconceptions to be debunked- this is a hobby. Not a diesease or sickness. Looking at pictures of watches is not deleterious for your health, wallet or bank account unless you are spineless with no resolve. Buying a Sinn is not considered Sinning. TF/Eddie make great watches but is not the right answer to every which watch question.
And, no one knows when Rolex prices are going to go up
Inspire of assertions to the contrary.

    Q
Can I start a thread about a subject previously discussed. At any time. Ever?

    A
No, you may not. You must extensively search for the same subject matter, and reply to an existing thread no matter how old and out of date it may be.
You may have to suffer a GIF (or similar mocking media) depicting an image of a zombie containing the words 'Thread Resurrection' however, this will pale into insignificance compared to the barrage of abuse you may encounter from members literally frothing at the mouth at having to ignore ANOTHER thread on the subject.

    Also:
    Q
Is Rolex better than Grand Seiko?
    A
    Yes.

Q: Is it OK to buy a fake/replica

A: Don't let the door hit you on the backside as you leave...

Q: But I bought it to see if I liked Rolex/Panerai/Patek*

A: You'll make lots of great new friends on RepGeek

Q: Is- Ignore it if you don't like it an acceptable suggestion when dealing with stupid or repititive posts

    A. No. I prefer the other members to be intellectually curious, considerate and not lazy. And, pay attention. I don't want to have to wade through plethora of repititive threads like- Why no love for Tag or your top 1/2/3/4/5 watches or your perfect beater or holiday watch . Even if you think you are asking a very original and thought provoking question, we have already thought of it and discussed it thread bare
There is a stringent protocol on how often a thread can be repeated or how soon can a new thread be started on same subject . For details PM any of the SAMs ( self appointed moderators ). For a complete list of SAMs , please contact one of then MOSAMs ( Moderators of Self appointed moderators )

    Q. If someone puts deleted or duplicate as a thread title, am I required to check it anyway.

    A. Absolutely, because others will have already posted funny or sarcastic comments.

    Q. Is it okay to list a watch on SC without checking the WTB listings first.

    A. Yes. The WTB listings are for members to express their wish list, they have no real expectation of someone offering them what they want.

    Q. What will happen to all my cash once I gain access to SC.

    A. Contrary to the oft-posted myth, your funds will not evaporate the moment you have access. Unless you're a moron, that is.

    Q. If someone posts something I don't like, don't agree with or find offensive, what do I do?

    A. You must NOT ignore the post. YOU are in the right. Always.

It is your obligation to stop at NOTHING to prove the poster wrong and everyone (except the OP) will be on your side, and you will win the Internet. Do NOT put the garbage-spouter on "ignore" (although you can claim that you have done) as this is a sign of WEAKNESS.

    Q. Am I permitted to point out the grammatical errors in another member's post?
    A. Yes,but you had better be 100% correct or your life will end there and then.

    Q. As a newbie to the forum,am I permitted to express my own views if they are the polar opposite of longer term members?
    A. Yes,but be prepared for comments along the lines of "What do you know? You've only been here two minutes"

    Q. Has my monitor/laptop/tablet screen broken?
    A. No,all of Tony's photos look like that.

    Q. Do I need to read any of the forum stickys regards posting pictures, access to sales corner, using the search function etc?
    A. No,why should you bother...no other sod does.

    Q. Would it be handy to have a basic grasp of Google before joining the forum?
    A. See previous answer.

    Q. I don't own,and have never owned, an MX5. Am I still allowed to be a member?
    A. Believe it or not,yes.

    Q. I'm a new member and wish to purchase a tactical torch with a tent, where do I go? And I need some manky shoes and a toothbrush charger. And a camera.

    A. Most people would visit a charity shop or a skip, however these items can be found from members on here. Just wait until you have the necessary post count.

    Q. how much is the necessary post count for SC?

    A. Begone, foul beast and runner, speed posting won't help you now coward!

    Q. I have heard that the bear pit is a great place and the debates are really helpful, is this right ?

    A. Yes, you would be surprised what is discussed. Today's discussion would make your hair curl, but it won't advance your watch knowledge much.

    Q. If someone starts a thread, help me pick a Rolex - is it okay to recommend a Seiko or an Omega.

    A. Absolutely, it demonstrates that the OP is a little shallow minded and your worldly wise advice on other brands will be most welcome.

  27. #27
Q: I don't know anything about watches at all, and have thus far been largely disinterested in them, but I have £X,000 to spend. What should I buy?

A: Something other than a watch from the sounds of it.

  28. #28
    Q. Is it okay to list a watch on SC without checking the WTB listings first.

No it is worth checking the WTB section and contacting any relevant members, expect your price to be ridiculed because 9 years ago 'hairspring Bob' sold one below that price which sold in 9 seconds flat.
You can then go ahead and list your item as planned

  29. #29
Q: What's the best way to take a picture of my watch?

A: In the dark, next to something weird for no reason.

    Q. What do I do with my funds?
    A. If you are a bank or investment organisation then you likely know what to do with your funds. If you are an individual buying or selling a watch you have 'money' or even 'cash'. Or a credit agreement with a leading High Street retailer.

I do too. Now. Although it did take a bit of time to figure it out from the first page of search results.

For anyone that doesn't care enough to Google it, but is curious nonetheless, it's the abbreviated names of 3 (presumably the main 3) replica forums.

Someone will be along shortly to tell you it's illegal to google fake watch forums, and every time you do so, Mexican drug cartels get free air miles.

They tend not to be vocal, preferring to maintain secrecy or lie. Goes with the territory.
