Some of you might of seen my purchase of the little fifties Oysterdate from Bayu off SC. The wife (50s child) was looking over my shoulder while looking at on Sunday morning and remarked how nice it was, when i told her it was quite small at 30mm her reaction was i want it, well who am i to deny the wife. Well it came on Wednesday and i said do you want to unwrap it (seen the fuss i make when postie as been) She said you bet i do, well she did and she is thrilled. It is great condition, plus point its been serviced and running bang on with up to now 52hour from full wind spec says 58hrs. Its the 1215 movement with the roulette date wheel (black and Red) One thing is how did guys wear such small watches back then. What do you think guys.

Perfect solution for a genuinely stunning watch.
I would have jumped at the opportunity to buy, but even my wife wears a large (35mm plus) watch, so had to let it go.
A cracker to hold on to - the watch, not the wife...
I think the 30mm Rolex is generally referred to as a boys' watch, rather than 'small gents'.

I'm not particularly fond of Rolex, vintage watches or small watches, and don't usually comment on them, but that does look nice. Your wife has good taste.
30mm is teeny but I expect it was because people, generally speaking, were smaller back then. Even looking at my photos from the 90s people seemed slimmer.
Anyway, I remember seeing that on SC and thinking it didn't look over half a century old. Stunning
I looked at it and thought Grand Seiko, I wonder if it was an inspiration...
Great watch! Nice story, thanks for sharing.
I've had a few Speedkings, admittedly they are small for todays market but lovely watches and very wearable even now.
To answer the OP, Im guessing on their wrists.
People were smaller then,I remember my great grandfather wearing a small gold watch, which looked fine on him
They could do with re-producing that at 36-38mm. Just sometimes you wish they'd loose the 1001 datejust dial variants
Mechanical watches were the only game back then. Necessity and not affectation or hobby.
Mechanical miniaturization must have been one kind of bragging point, cost/status signifier.

There are definitely aspects that I would like to see in a modern Rolex. The hands are much better than the modern Rolex stick shape.
I could also wear that size. Rolex dress watches look too big greater than 36-39 for me.
I have to admit the hands are a thing of beauty on this watch, perfect proportions, with the seconds hand so fine and delicate, but so legible.
The serial number checks out that it's year 1956, the wifes birth year, really special now
I was so close to buying this on several occasions - kicking myself now. Congratulations and enjoy.
