Thread: What was Omega thinking?

    What was Omega thinking?

How did designers from Omega came from this:

    to this?

I am a bit of fan of GMT watches and when I saw headline "review of new Omega GMT" I jumped right in to see this monstrosity. Why would they put divers bezel and shrink GMT numbers so tiny on GMT watch? I always thought that purpose of GMT watch is ability to see time in two timezones, not start looking around for a loupe when you are in Japan trying to figure out is it too late to call your mom. Honestly, at first I did not even noticed that there are GMT hours printed on rehaut.

Oh dear. In my watch top trumps this would be low on legibility and v low in classiness.... ;-)

According to Omega it's a) "remarkable", b) a "combination of a GMT model and a diving watch" and c) "coloured totally black to represent the ocean at a depth of 300 m"...!

It's slightly less shocking when you compare:

A Blog To Watch: "the black ceramic Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black GMT watches are both technically exciting and visually beautiful"

Personally I prefer the new model - don't like the bezel on the old model with the big font.

    Likewise.
Although in SS with a blue dial and orange GMT scale would be my preference.

Me also! Lots of us have no taste! Not that either particularly float my boat, compared to the many other timeless classics Omega do...

They may have poached the Zenith designer from prior to 2012.

That's nasty (IMHO). Would be a lot better without the HEV at 10 o'clock.

Yep. The lack of (totally useless) HEV was one of the big plusses of the 2 sword hands SMP-GMT variants shown above. The more I see of Omega's new design direction, stupidly thick, over chunky, needlessly blingy, fugly designs using un-refinishable brittle case materials, the less I like.

It's plain nasty. And yes hard to imagine that the same company did the 2254 Seamaster

Those two words - "needlessly blingy" says it all.

I couldn't find a sterling price, but the Swiss Franc price translates to over £8000

Can`t stand black watches or black alloy wheels on cars....both look tacky to me.

    Someone will buy it.......

I'm a long time Omega fan but some of the newer models just don't do it for me, this being one of them.

Too much bling and I really don't like ceramic cases at all.

I really like the old GMT Seamasters especially the Great White.

That price is as ridiculous as the watch itself!!

Omega hang your head in shame

But Omega have already done that:

    ...and this:

    ...so what else was left?

I like the Black and Red one, I bet in the flesh it looks far better than the picture.

At least they're a bit different to their competitors.

It certainly stands out more than the blue version.

What were they thinking indeed? It looks garish?

    Possibly an experiment? Hahaha

Too bling, too big, too chunky and too colourful... I'll not be trading my 2254 any time soon!

I was largely underwhelmed by most of this years offerings. Seems that they're trying to target a younger (Asian) market right now. certainly wouldn't wear any of the new stuff, far too vulgar.

I see no point in 24 hour markings I can't read. They've relegated the function. As a result the form can't work IMO. Make your mind up what the watch is.

Is eight lines (excluding logo, and Swiss Made text) on the dial a new record?

I've been a long time fan of Omega but over the last few years I'm starting to find Longines so much more tasteful. Might be time for Swatch to look at their hierarchy in my minds eye.

I like them too, they wouldn't go on my tiny wrists all that well, but they look nice in pictures and in person.
