That does seen on the high side, as I bought a 2016 unworn for £4,400

I've dealt twice with Austin Kaye, once was a great experience and once not so good at first, had to sort a lot of stuff over the phone.

I did find them a tad expensive, but they were the only place at the time that had the watch I wanted, so...

I have a deal negotiated with a reputable dealer at £3400 on an Explorer 114270, box and service card from Rolex service that has just been done (no original papers). Anyone think I can do better? The Explorer is the one for me after full thought.

As far as I can tell from a dealer this seems a decent price. You may be able to get one a bit cheaper privately but I wouldn't think it would be significantly cheaper?

If you were to buy a used Rolex under £4K, preferably closer to £3k, what would you go for and why? I don't know my Rolex references very well, what's popular and what's not, what holds its value better than others etc.

I like the Explorer 1, but the 36mm version might be a little small and I think the 39mm version that would sit within the budget had a short minutes hand?

What's the general consensus on the older model Explorer 2s?

    Thanks, Berty.
Without a second of hesitation I would recomment the Exp 1 36 mm. It's perfect for every occasion, it's bullet proof and get one with the SEL bracelet. Also it keeps on going up in value so in a couple of years time you'll be able to sell it for what you bought it.
I've bought mine 3 years ago thinking that over time I would flip it but now could never part with it (but still bought a couple other Rolexes though )

If I could only have one watch, it would be the exp1 it's just perfect.

:EDIT: responded to your first post and didn't see you ended up making the best decision :)
congratulations on a great piece, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Did you mean the 39mm Explorer? as there isn't a 39mm Explorer II, it's either 40mm or 42mm

I imagine that's a reference to the 40mm Exp II given the ref cited. Rolex don't help us because althought it's formally the 40mm it actually measures 39...

Haha, thanks! Good to see some more 36 appreciation! It is stunning. It's weird, when I first put it on after wearing my Black Bay I thought "argh it's small". Now it feels perfect and my BB too big! Think I need to wear each of these for a decent period each time, so I get used to each one! Maybe one week on, one week off.

I have absolutely the same experience between my Black Bay and my Grand Seiko which is 37.5mm. But on further wearings, I realise the Black Bay is too large.... Wish it were 39mm, 47mm lug to lug and thinner!

Embrace the chunky beauty of it! I figure, it's a diver so it should be a chunk of watch. It wears smaller off the bracelet, especially on a mesh.

Sounds fair, I'd take a recent service card over original papers every time.

A classic. Which dealer did you use?

    Yep the 39/40mm ExpII....
I've had several and although I never measured any of them I'm firmly in the 39mm camp as it definitely wears smaller than a 40mm Sub or GMT.

And many congrats to Berty too btw!

I never thought of an Explorer until I tried one on and really like them now, but stilll saving my money for a sub or Pepsi GMT. I just seem to keep missing them.

It's my 30th this year, so would be a birth year watch (which I guess adds something for me).

Any thoughts on this, or experience with Austin Kaye?

    Cheers
Austin Kaye is great for a stop off to ogle some watch porn after a few scoops in the Nell Gwynn or Gordon's Wine Bar and before heading up the Charing Cross Road to the theatre.

Unfortunately their prime position means that their prices are far higher than I would be prepared to pay.

I think this is the best value I've had on anything, never mind a Rolex.
    A little north of £2k.
    I love it.

Got to laugh at myself seeing this thread come up. Ended up trading the 114270 for a 214270 2016 Basel version, and no longer have the Black Bay. Lots of change in last few months.

Datejust s are great value currently.

I’m kicking myself I didn’t buy some vintage GMT and Subs that I was offered about 10 years ago!

Picked up my first Rolex as an early 50th present from me to me!

It’s a 1968 birth year, immaculate condition and £2500 from dealer.

The 15200 (Perpetual Date) is very sensible money used, understated too, perhaps dull to some tastes. Mine’s been faultless since new and is easy and inexpensive to service (local Rolex agent in Northampton did a fantastic job).

The new air king at £4550 is over £500 above his top budget though.

I'd always thought that they were based on the explorer but are actually based on the milgauss so quite a lot thicker than the explorer.

Can't argue with the explorer 2 but I'm not sure how much longer they'll remain within budget; there's a place near me had one at £4500 which sold and now has another at £4750.

Haywood does know the market though probabley better than anyone, after all its business for him not just a hobby, some of the prices here on SC have looked inflated to say the least and not sold but that is more the try it see attitude, if you really want to sell a watch then there is a middle ground that will achieve a fair price for buyer and seller.

The North West does have some great used Rolex dealers and when the day comes I'll drive up for a weekend stay and hopefully come away with my first Rolex..

Another thumbs up from me, I have done many transactions over the years with Haywood and they are one of the safest places in the UK to buy a used Rolex from, the are not just retail suits, they are Watch enthusiasts themselves and their knowledge of all things Rolex is incredible.

They don't do mail order, but well worth a trip to Liverpool for and yes their prices are very competitive.

I am close to buying a pre owned / vintage watch and there are only two shops I would trust, miltonaires being one of them. Aside from that I would say long time established members / trusted sellers here on SC. Lot of junk (not watches) and ambitious pricing recently on SC but the trusted sellers always list good stock at fair prices.

Thanks for the answers. Maybe it would be worth to fly over from Dublin and visit. Currently trying to find a 14060 or 14060m Submariner to buy, but I am struggling to find a decent one in Ireland
